Cisco Certifications Across Networking, Security, Automation, and AI
Cisco’s certification portfolio is much broader in 2026 than a simple progression from routing basics to advanced networking. The current program spans networking, cybersecurity, automation, collaboration, data center, service provider, design, and newer AI-oriented learning. Cisco also now uses names such as CCNA Cybersecurity and CCNA Automation, reflecting changes to the associate-level portfolio that candidates may still encounter under older names in books, job descriptions, and archived certification pages.
Because the ecosystem is large, the right way to plan a Cisco path is by technology responsibility. A network administrator who needs broad enterprise fundamentals has a different starting point from a security operations analyst, an automation engineer, or a data-center specialist. Cisco’s current certification map gives each of those learners a route, but the exams become much easier to understand once the candidate identifies the systems and decisions the target role actually owns.
CCST credentials provide entry points before associate-level certification
Cisco’s entry tier includes Certified Support Technician options, including networking and cybersecurity. These credentials are designed for learners building foundational knowledge before taking on the wider scope of an associate certification. For a newcomer, the CCST Networking route can establish vocabulary around network devices, addressing, connectivity, troubleshooting, and support tasks before the candidate tackles the broader CCNA blueprint.
Entry certification should not become a reason to delay hands-on work. Even basic study improves when learners configure addressing, inspect interface status, trace traffic, recognize common cabling and wireless problems, and explain what changes at each layer of communication. Cisco’s Packet Tracer and other lab environments make it possible to practice many of those relationships without owning a production network.
CCNA remains the broad associate foundation for enterprise networking
The current CCNA validates network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability. Cisco identifies 200-301 CCNA as the exam for the certification. That breadth is deliberate: an associate network professional must understand how switching, routing, services, security, and automation interact rather than treating them as unrelated chapters.
Preparation should therefore move between configuration and explanation. A candidate may know the command used to configure a VLAN but still need to explain how trunks carry traffic, how spanning tree prevents loops, how a routed boundary changes forwarding, and what evidence would be checked when a host cannot reach a remote subnet. Likewise, IP services such as DHCP, DNS, NTP, NAT, and first-hop redundancy make more sense when studied as parts of an operational network.
Older resources often use “CCNA Routing and Switching,†but that separate certification name belongs to an earlier Cisco structure. Current candidates should use the live 200-301 objectives and treat older routing-and-switching material as concept support only. Cisco’s exam and certification names should always be checked against the current site before training is purchased.
Cisco now has distinct associate paths for cybersecurity and automation
In cybersecurity operations, Cisco currently offers 200-201 as the exam for CCNA Cybersecurity. The blueprint centers on security concepts, monitoring, host-based analysis, network intrusion analysis, and security policies and procedures. The credential is aimed at the tactical work performed by security operations teams, so preparation should include interpreting alerts, traffic, endpoint evidence, and incident context rather than studying only security vocabulary.
Automation has its own associate credential as well. Cisco now calls the program CCNA Automation, and 200-901 tests software development and design, APIs, application deployment and security, scripting, workflow automation, and infrastructure as code. Candidates may still see the former DevNet Associate name in older material; the current Cisco naming should guide new study. The technical lesson is broader than the rebrand: network professionals are increasingly expected to read structured data, use APIs, automate repeatable changes, and understand software practices alongside device configuration.
A current associate path should be chosen by daily work. CCNA is the stronger general network foundation, CCNA Cybersecurity is focused on detection and response, and CCNA Automation is focused on programmability and automated operations. There is overlap, but each builds a different center of gravity.
CCNP Enterprise combines a core exam with a chosen concentration
Cisco’s professional certifications use a two-exam model: one core exam plus one concentration. For enterprise networking, CCNP Enterprise begins with 350-401 ENCOR. The core covers dual-stack architecture, virtualization, infrastructure, network assurance, security, and automation. Candidates then choose a concentration that matches a specialization such as advanced routing, software-defined access, design, wireless, or automation.
For example, 300-410 ENARSI focuses on advanced routing and services, while 300-435 ENAUTO develops enterprise automation and programmability. The concentration choice should follow actual responsibility. Someone troubleshooting complex routing policy gains more from ENARSI; a NetDevOps-oriented engineer may find ENAUTO more aligned. Cisco’s model lets the core establish shared professional breadth while the concentration records specialist depth.
The core exam also matters beyond CCNP. Cisco uses professional core exams as qualifying exams for the corresponding CCIE lab path. That means ENCOR is not only an intermediate milestone; it also forms part of the expert progression for enterprise infrastructure. Candidates should understand that relationship before choosing an exam based only on a single job posting.
Security has both network-protection and security-operations professional tracks
Cisco’s portfolio now distinguishes a CCNP Security track from CCNP Cybersecurity. CCNP Security emphasizes securing networks and data, with 350-701 SCOR as a major core exam in the current security ecosystem. Cisco made the SCOR v2.0 blueprint the live version on August 27, 2026, so candidates using earlier v1.x material should reconcile it with the current objectives. Its subject matter includes security concepts, network security, cloud security, content security, endpoint protection and detection, secure network access, visibility, and enforcement.
CCNP Cybersecurity is oriented more toward operational defense. Cisco’s current exam list includes a 350-201 cybersecurity core and concentration options such as 300-215 for forensic analysis and incident response and 300-220 for threat hunting and defense. This distinction matters because architecture and control deployment are different from evidence analysis and active threat response, even though experienced security professionals often need knowledge of both.
Security preparation should therefore use scenarios that force candidates to connect controls with evidence. Ask what telemetry would reveal an attack, where a policy should be enforced, how identity changes the trust decision, how segmentation limits blast radius, or what artifacts support an incident conclusion. Those questions develop judgment that survives changes in product interfaces.
Automation has expanded into a complete associate-to-expert track
Cisco’s 2026 automation family now runs from CCNA Automation through the current CCNP Automation program and into CCIE Automation. The older DevNet Professional name remains relevant as transition context because it represents the lineage Cisco has since renamed and reorganized. The current CCNP Automation core is 350-901 AUTOCOR, which covers automation systems development and design, infrastructure as code, operations, and AI in automation. Concentrations include enterprise and data-center automation such as 300-435 ENAUTO and 300-635 DCNAUTO.
This track makes clear that automation is not just writing a Python script. Professional work includes API design and consumption, source control, testing, structured data, event-driven workflows, authentication, secret handling, deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code, observability, and failure recovery. A script that works once is not the same as an automation system that can be trusted repeatedly in production.
Candidates should build small end-to-end projects: query inventory through an API, validate desired state, render or apply a change, handle errors, record results, and make the process repeatable. That exercise links software practices to network operations and prepares learners for the scenario-based thinking expected at higher levels.
Data center, collaboration, and service provider tracks remain specialized professional routes
Large Cisco environments extend far beyond campus routing and switching. CCNP Data Center focuses on compute, data-center networking, storage connectivity, automation, security, and technologies such as application-centric infrastructure. Current concentrations include 300-620 DCACI and the newer 300-640 DCAI for data-center AI infrastructure.
CCNP Collaboration serves engineers working with communications and collaboration systems, while CCNP Service Provider addresses provider-scale IP infrastructure. These are not natural next steps for every CCNA holder. They become valuable when the engineer works in those environments and can connect exam objectives to production systems.
At expert level, Cisco maintains CCIE certifications for technologies including Enterprise Infrastructure, Security, Data Center, Collaboration, and Service Provider. Expert certification adds a demanding practical examination, so lab readiness and design/troubleshooting judgment become central.
AI is also entering Cisco’s learning portfolio without replacing core infrastructure skills.
Cisco’s current certification site highlights AI-focused learning, including the Cisco AI Technical Practitioner path. AI also appears inside other tracks: automation objectives now refer to AI-powered automation, and data-center infrastructure increasingly has to support accelerated compute and AI workloads. Candidates should view this as an expansion of required context, not a signal that routing, security, systems, or software fundamentals have become optional.
Infrastructure professionals working around AI need to understand capacity, networking, data movement, observability, security, automation, and reliability. The exact depth depends on the role. A network engineer may focus on transport and fabric design, an automation engineer on model-assisted workflows and APIs, and a security professional on AI-related threats and governance. Cisco’s portfolio is increasingly reflecting those overlaps.
Recertification is part of the Cisco career model.
Cisco certifications are generally time-limited, and the current program uses exams and Continuing Education options for renewal. Cisco states that associate, professional, and expert certifications are valid for three years. That means certification planning should include how skills will be maintained, not only how the initial badge will be earned.
Continuing Education can be especially useful for professionals whose work evolves across technologies. A network engineer who moves deeper into automation or security can use structured learning to maintain an existing credential while expanding capability. Candidates should still check the current CE rules and credit values because Cisco updates eligible activities and recertification policies over time.
A Cisco path should become narrower as professional responsibility becomes clearer
Beginners benefit from broad foundations, but experienced engineers gain more by choosing depth that matches the systems they own. A candidate may begin with CCST or CCNA, then move toward CCNP Enterprise, Security, Cybersecurity, Automation, Data Center, Collaboration, or Service Provider. The choice should be based on recurring work: design, operations, troubleshooting, incident response, application delivery, automation, or architecture.
Large Cisco pages also create a temptation to collect credentials horizontally. That can produce impressive breadth without enough depth to solve difficult problems. A stronger plan pairs certification with repeated hands-on work, documentation, failure analysis, and design tradeoffs. Use the exam blueprint as a map, but build competence by configuring, observing, breaking, repairing, and explaining systems.
The Cisco portfolio changes as technology and job roles change, so candidates should verify current names and exam codes before each step. In 2026 that is especially important around the newer CCNA Cybersecurity and CCNA Automation names. The enduring principle is simpler: choose the certification that validates the work you want to perform, then build enough practical depth that the credential accurately describes what you can do.
