700-242 CESF: Cisco Environmental Sustainability Fundamentals – Stage 1
The 700-242 CESF exam is the current Stage 1 assessment for Cisco Environmental Sustainability Fundamentals. Cisco lists it as a 60-minute exam focused on the knowledge needed to build an environmental-sustainability practice, and it is associated with the Cisco Environmental Sustainability Specialization. It is a partner-readiness exam, so candidates need to understand sustainability concepts in a way that can support customer discovery and a repeatable business practice rather than treating the subject as a purely academic environmental course.
CESF replaces the older Stage 1 approach represented by 700-240 CESO. Candidates using older training should recognize the continuity—circularity, environmental drivers, Cisco programs, and customer value still matter—while relying on the current CESF blueprint and current partner materials for the actual assessment. Cisco’s present two-stage structure then continues to 700-246 CESPB for practice building.
The most useful preparation mindset is to connect environmental goals with customer operations. A partner needs to understand why an organization has a sustainability target, what data or process defines progress, how technology lifecycle decisions can contribute, and where Cisco programs or architecture choices are relevant. The exam is stronger when studied as a consulting conversation than as a list of green terms.
Stage 1 begins with a common language for environmental sustainability
Customers, vendors, regulators, and partners may use sustainability language differently, so the first job is to establish definitions. Candidates should understand concepts such as greenhouse-gas reduction, energy efficiency, circular economy, product lifecycle, responsible sourcing, reuse, and recycling. These concepts overlap, but they describe different levers. A customer can improve energy efficiency while still having weak end-of-life processes, or improve circularity without solving every emissions source.
A common vocabulary helps the partner ask better questions. If a customer says it wants “greener IT,†determine whether the priority is electricity consumption, emissions reporting, asset recovery, packaging, procurement criteria, hardware longevity, or a corporate commitment that touches several of these areas. The solution cannot be evaluated until the objective is specific enough to measure.
Candidates should also be comfortable explaining that environmental goals operate across a lifecycle. The environmental effect of technology includes production, transport, use, maintenance, reuse, and retirement. That broader frame prevents the conversation from collapsing into a single metric such as device power draw.
A sustainability practice needs repeatable discovery, not isolated product claims
Building a practice means creating a process that multiple sellers and engineers can use consistently. Discovery should identify the customer’s published goals, internal stakeholders, reporting requirements, existing asset policies, refresh plans, and constraints. The partner can then decide whether the opportunity is primarily advisory, product refresh, lifecycle recovery, architecture modernization, or a combination.
Repeatability also requires boundaries. Sales teams need approved language for environmental claims, technical teams need a way to validate architecture effects, and project teams need processes for asset return or reuse. Without those controls, one seller may promise outcomes that another team cannot substantiate. A mature practice therefore includes governance as well as knowledge.
For exam preparation, design a simple engagement flow: discover goals, establish baseline, identify relevant lifecycle or technology levers, validate feasibility, agree evidence, implement, and review results. That flow can be applied to many scenarios and is more durable than memorizing a particular campaign name.
Circularity turns refresh projects into lifecycle-management opportunities
A hardware refresh creates a sustainability decision at both ends of the project. New equipment may improve capability or efficiency, but the old equipment still has to be handled. Circular practice asks whether assets can remain in use, be redeployed, refurbished, returned, or responsibly recycled. Partners are often well placed to coordinate these steps because they participate in both the new deployment and the removal of existing equipment.
Circularity also encourages better inventory discipline. Organizations cannot plan recovery well if they do not know what equipment they own, where it is, how old it is, and what data it may contain. Asset records therefore support both operational and environmental outcomes. They make refresh decisions more deliberate and reduce the chance that retired equipment remains indefinitely in storerooms.
Candidates should be able to explain the difference between extending useful life and simply delaying necessary modernization. Keeping equipment longer can reduce material turnover, but unsupported, insecure, or inefficient devices may create other risks. Sustainability decisions require context rather than one universal rule.
Environmental data needs a baseline before a partner can claim improvement
A customer cannot show progress without knowing what is being measured. Baselines may include energy consumption, equipment counts, asset return volumes, emissions estimates, packaging metrics, or other indicators tied to a stated goal. The exact measurement method can vary, but the consulting principle is stable: define the starting point and the success metric before presenting the result.
This also protects the partner from overstating technology impact. A network redesign may reduce the number of devices or improve energy efficiency, but the environmental benefit depends on utilization, deployment scale, and the customer’s accounting method. The partner should identify what can be measured directly, what must be estimated, and what remains outside the scope of the engagement.
In preparation scenarios, look for missing evidence. If a question jumps from “the customer wants lower emissions†directly to a product recommendation, pause and identify what information would validate the recommendation. The exam rewards the ability to build a practice, and evidence is a core part of making that practice credible.
Cisco lifecycle programs can support a customer process when they match the objective
Cisco has programs associated with product return, takeback, reuse, and refreshed equipment. Candidates should understand the role such programs can play without assuming that every customer or every asset follows the same path. Eligibility, geography, product type, and current program terms can matter, so the partner must verify the live requirements during a real engagement.
The bigger lesson is process integration. If the customer plans a campus refresh, include removal and recovery in the project plan. If the organization has data-destruction or chain-of-custody requirements, address them before devices leave the site. If refurbished equipment is being considered, confirm support and suitability. Environmental value is created by a well-run lifecycle process, not by attaching a sustainability label after deployment.
Stage 1 candidates should know enough to recognize these opportunities and involve the right operational resources. Detailed logistics may belong to another role, but the seller or practice leader should not overlook end-of-life planning during discovery.
Sustainability conversations should connect technical choices to business priorities
Customers may pursue environmental goals because of regulation, corporate commitments, procurement standards, investor expectations, operating cost, brand priorities, or supply-chain pressure. Those drivers influence what evidence matters and who participates in the decision. A facilities or sustainability team may focus on energy and reporting, while IT operations focuses on resilience and lifecycle support.
The partner’s job is to align the technology conversation with those priorities inside Cisco’s wider partner ecosystem. A refresh may support energy and manageability goals, a takeback process may support circularity, and remote collaboration may affect travel patterns, but each claim should be framed carefully. Technology is one contributor to an organizational sustainability strategy, not the entire strategy.
This customer-centered approach is consistent with the broader Cisco partner model: specialists need enough subject knowledge to have a credible conversation and enough discipline to bring in technical, lifecycle, or reporting expertise when the requirement exceeds their role.
Practice governance should also define how environmental claims are reviewed. A sales statement about energy, emissions, reuse, or waste should have an identified source and a clear scope. Technical teams may validate architecture assumptions, operations teams may confirm recovery processes, and customer stakeholders may own the actual reporting methodology. Establishing those boundaries early reduces the risk that a well-intended sustainability message becomes a promise the project cannot substantiate.
Stage 1 should prepare the organization for Stage 2 practice building
Cisco’s current environmental-sustainability path is explicitly staged. CESF establishes foundational understanding; the current 700-246 CESPB Stage 2 assessment focuses further on practice building. That progression matters because knowledge alone does not create a repeatable partner capability. The organization also needs roles, process, customer messaging, operational support, and a way to demonstrate outcomes.
As you prepare for 700-242, note which topics are concepts and which are operational questions for the next stage. Circular economy is a concept; deciding how your partner organization integrates asset recovery into a sales motion is practice design. Customer sustainability drivers are concepts; building discovery templates and enablement around those drivers is practice design.
This separation also helps candidates using old materials. Do not try to map every older 700-240 or 700-245 objective one-to-one. Use the current two-stage structure as the organizing model and carry forward only the legacy concepts that still fit the current blueprint.
Preparation should combine current Cisco material with realistic customer cases
Use the live Cisco blueprint as the boundary for exam study, then create cases that force you to apply it. Examples include a customer refreshing a large campus, a company with a public emissions target, an organization trying to formalize equipment recovery, or a partner that wants to launch a sustainability practice but has no standard discovery process. For each case, identify stakeholders, goals, evidence, relevant lifecycle options, and the next validation step.
Review terminology until you can explain it in plain business language. If you cannot explain circularity, takeback, lifecycle, or baseline measurement without resorting to slogans, keep working. Partner exams reward practical communication because candidates are expected to use the knowledge with customers and internal teams.
Finally, verify current program requirements before using the exam for specialization planning. Cisco can update partner roles, stage requirements, or training even while the underlying sustainability concepts remain stable. The exam is current, but successful preparation combines durable subject knowledge with the latest official program information.
