701-200 DevOps Tools Engineer: Delivery Pipelines, Containers, Automation, and Observability

701-200 is the current version 2.0 exam for the Linux Professional Institute DevOps Tools Engineer certification. LPI lists the exam as 90 minutes with 60 multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions and no formal prerequisite, although it recommends a certification or equivalent competence in a primary field such as Linux administration or software development. Version 2.0 replaced 701-100, which was available until June 30, 2026.

The exam is built around the work required to move software from source code to a stable running service. Candidates need to understand modern software development, standard components and platforms, source control, continuous integration and delivery, container and orchestration concepts, machine deployment, configuration management, service operations, and monitoring. Tools matter, but the relationship between them matters more.

For Linux administrators, LPIC-1 provides a useful systems foundation, while developers bring application and testing knowledge. 701-200 deliberately sits between those roles. Strong preparation therefore alternates between code-oriented tasks and operations-oriented tasks until the candidate can follow one change through the entire lifecycle.

Modern software delivery starts by making changes small, reviewable, and reproducible

DevOps practice assumes that changes can be represented clearly, reviewed, tested, and reproduced. Candidates should understand development workflow concepts, dependency management, build systems, and artifact creation well enough to see where hidden state enters the process. If a build works only on one developer’s laptop, the delivery system is already unreliable before CI begins.

Take a simple application and document every prerequisite needed to build it from a clean environment. Move those prerequisites into versioned manifests or automated steps where possible. Then delete the local build output and reproduce it. This exercise exposes undocumented dependencies and clarifies the difference between source, dependencies, build artifacts, and runtime configuration.

Git workflows must support collaboration rather than create long-lived divergence

Version control objectives are about more than commands. Candidates should know how commits, branches, merges, rebases, tags, remotes, and hooks affect collaboration. History needs to remain understandable enough for reviews and incident investigation. Release tags and commit identifiers also become useful deployment metadata when an operator needs to know exactly what code is running.

Practice a feature change from branch creation through review, conflict resolution, merge, tag, and rollback. Use the repository history to answer who changed a line and which release first contained it. This is the operational value of source control: it turns change into evidence that can be connected with builds, deployments, and production behavior.

CI/CD pipelines should express gates, artifacts, and promotion explicitly

Secrets and permissions in CI/CD deserve the same care as production access. A pipeline runner may be able to publish artifacts, deploy infrastructure, or reach production APIs, which makes its credentials valuable. Separate build permissions from deployment permissions where practical, minimize secret exposure in logs, and avoid allowing untrusted code paths to execute with privileged credentials. Delivery speed should not come from turning the automation system into a universal administrator.

A pipeline is a workflow that converts source into tested, deployable artifacts and then moves those artifacts through environments. Candidates should understand jobs, stages, runners or agents, environment variables, secrets, caches, artifacts, triggers, and conditions. The most important design principle is that promotion should reuse the same artifact rather than rebuilding different binaries for each environment.

Create a small pipeline that validates code, runs tests, builds an artifact, and deploys to a disposable target. Record the artifact identifier and make the deployment report it. Then intentionally fail a test and confirm later stages stop. This teaches why a pipeline is both automation and policy: it defines the evidence a change must produce before it progresses.

Containers standardize application packaging but expose new lifecycle concerns

Image size and layer design also influence operational behavior. Large images move slowly, expand the attack surface, and consume registry/storage bandwidth. Multi-stage builds and carefully chosen base images can reduce unnecessary content. Candidates do not need to optimize every byte, but they should understand that a container image is a deployable artifact whose construction affects security, performance, and reproducibility.

Containers package applications and dependencies into images that can be promoted consistently, but operators still manage registries, image tags, runtime configuration, networks, volumes, resource limits, and security. Candidates should understand Docker-style workflows as well as the underlying distinction between an immutable image and a mutable running container.

Build images with explicit versions, inspect layers, push to a local or test registry, and run the same image with different environment settings. Avoid using the mutable “latest” tag as your only identity. A deployment should be able to prove which immutable artifact was promoted and reproduce it later if an incident requires rollback.

Orchestration introduces desired state, scheduling, and service resilience

Once an application has multiple containers or must survive node changes, orchestration becomes important. Candidates should understand why platforms such as Kubernetes schedule workloads, maintain replica counts, expose services, manage configuration, and perform rolling updates. The DevOps exam does not replace a full platform-admin certification, but it expects enough architectural knowledge to use orchestrated systems in a delivery workflow.

Deploy a simple workload to Kubernetes or study a manifest deeply enough to identify desired replicas, image references, configuration, health checks, and service exposure. Change the image and observe rollout behavior. If you need deeper hands-on cluster administration, Certified Kubernetes Administrator is an adjacent path; 701-200 focuses on how orchestration participates in software delivery.

Infrastructure-as-code makes environments reviewable alongside application changes

State locking and team coordination matter when several people or pipelines can change the same infrastructure. Concurrent updates can overwrite assumptions or produce partial results. Even if a particular tool hides the locking mechanism, understand the operational requirement: infrastructure changes need serialization, review, and an authoritative record of what is actually deployed.

Provisioning tools define networks, compute, storage, and managed services in files that can be reviewed and versioned. Candidates should understand resources, variables, outputs, dependencies, providers, state, and the difference between declarative intent and imperative scripting. State deserves special attention because it connects the configuration to real infrastructure and can contain sensitive information.

Create a small Terraform configuration and observe the plan before applying it. Change one variable and confirm how the plan describes the intended delta. This makes the DevOps objective concrete: planned, versioned infrastructure reduces configuration drift and supports reproducible environments because changes are declared and reviewable rather than hidden in undocumented manual steps.

Configuration management and deployment automation solve different layers

Rollback strategy should match the layer that changed. An application release may be reversed by redeploying a prior artifact, while an infrastructure change may require a state-aware plan that preserves data and dependencies. Configuration changes can sometimes be converged back to an earlier desired state, but not every operation is automatically reversible. Candidates should ask what recovery mechanism exists before automating a destructive change.

Infrastructure provisioning creates resources; configuration management brings machines or services into an intended state; application deployment places a release into that environment. Real platforms can blur these boundaries, but candidates should still recognize them because failures and rollback strategies differ. A host may exist correctly while its package configuration is wrong, or the host may be correct while the application release is defective.

Automate a simple server role and run the configuration repeatedly to test convergence. Then deploy an application artifact separately. Make one manual change on the host and one application change, and observe which automation layer is responsible for restoring each desired state. This creates a practical model for diagnosing pipeline failures instead of restarting everything indiscriminately.

Observability turns production behavior into feedback for development

Correlation becomes increasingly important in distributed services. A user request may cross several containers or services, so logs should carry enough context to connect related events. Metrics reveal aggregate behavior, logs explain individual events, and traces can show request flow. The certification objective is not to master every observability platform; it is to understand why multiple telemetry types answer different operational questions.

DevOps closes the loop through monitoring, logging, metrics, alerting, and analysis. Candidates should understand why system metrics alone are not enough: service-level signals such as errors, latency, throughput, saturation, and availability reveal whether a change helped or harmed users. Logs add event detail, while dashboards and alerts make patterns visible to operators.

Instrument a small service and establish a baseline before deployment. After a change, compare the signals and decide whether the release should continue or roll back. This practice connects observability to delivery decisions and makes the broader DevOps practices more concrete: automation is useful only when teams can measure the result.

Study the objective map by building one complete delivery path

After the lab works, rehearse failure recovery. Roll back a release, recreate an environment from definitions, rotate a secret, replace an unhealthy container, and restore service while preserving evidence. DevOps maturity is not demonstrated only by the happy path. Reliable automation should make recovery predictable, and candidates who practice recovery understand the purpose of versioning, immutable artifacts, declarative state, and monitoring much more deeply.

Because 701-200 spans many tools, candidates can waste time learning every product superficially. Instead, build one end-to-end workflow: source control, automated tests, image or package creation, infrastructure definition, configuration, deployment, and monitoring. For each step, identify the concept LPI is testing and the evidence that proves the step succeeded.

Use the current LPI objectives as the final authority and treat older version 1.0 material as supporting explanation only. The LPI certification program is vendor-neutral, so readiness comes from understanding why tools are used and how categories of tools interact. Product-specific memorization should serve that architecture rather than replace it.
