ITIL Certification in 2026: Version 5, ITIL 4, and the Transition Path

ITIL is in an active transition period. PeopleCert has introduced ITIL (Version 5), including the new Foundation credential and higher modules, while ITIL 4 remains valid and available during a planned coexistence window. That makes 2026 a poor time to describe ITIL as if only one generation exists. Candidates need to understand which route they are entering, what an existing ITIL 4 certificate still means, and how the bridge and transition options fit the newer scheme.

PeopleCert is the current owner and examination organization for ITIL. That ownership relationship makes PeopleCert the relevant certification authority when explaining the program. Current first-party information should control version status, because old articles and training catalogs can remain online long after a module has moved into a retirement window.

For candidates starting now, ITIL Foundation Version 5 is the current foundation route, with the ITILFND V5 exam resource available for exam-specific context. PeopleCert currently lists 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, a closed-book format and a 65 percent passing mark.

Version 5 moves the foundation toward digital products, services and value systems

ITIL Foundation Version 5 retains the purpose of giving practitioners a shared service-management language while updating the framework for modern product and service environments. Candidates should expect the foundation to connect value creation, products, services, practices, governance and continual improvement rather than reduce ITIL to a linear set of operational processes.

A useful study method is to follow one digital service from demand to ongoing improvement. Identify stakeholders and value, define the product or service relationship, consider governance and measurement, trace how work moves across practices, and examine how incidents, changes, requests and improvement opportunities affect the service. This creates a mental model that is more durable than memorizing isolated definitions.

The new version also reflects increasingly AI-enabled and product-oriented operating models. That does not mean every organization must abandon established IT service-management practices. It means candidates should be able to explain how service principles apply when teams work with cloud platforms, products, automation, data and cross-functional delivery.

ITIL 4 remains valid during the planned transition window

Existing ITIL 4 holders do not suddenly lose their credentials because Version 5 has launched. PeopleCert currently plans to sunset ITIL 4 modules on December 31, 2027. Until that transition is complete, current guidance needs to distinguish a valid ITIL 4 certification from the question of which version a new candidate should begin today.

The ITIL 4 Foundation and ITILFND V4 resources are therefore best used to explain the still-valid earlier generation. They should not be presented as the default new path without considering Version 5, nor should they be labeled obsolete while the formal coexistence period remains open.

This distinction is practical for employers as well. A professional who earned ITIL 4 has evidence of service-management knowledge that still matters. An organization updating its learning program can decide when to move cohorts to Version 5 without pretending existing staff lost all value overnight.

The Foundation Bridge gives ITIL 4 holders a focused Version 5 update

PeopleCert offers an ITIL Foundation Bridge Version 5 specifically for ITIL 4 certification holders. The bridge concentrates on the changes introduced at Foundation level rather than asking an experienced candidate to repeat the entire foundation learning journey. It is an upgrade route, not a separate beginner credential.

The bridge is optional. That matters because some candidates may need Version 5 immediately for role or organizational reasons, while others may continue building experience with a valid ITIL 4 credential. PeopleCert currently schedules the Foundation Bridge to retire on December 31, 2027, the same planned date as the ITIL 4 module sunset.

Candidates should choose based on what comes next. If an organization is standardizing on the Version 5 scheme, bridging early can simplify later module choices. If the candidate is already partway through an ITIL 4 program, the current transition rules may allow existing credentials to serve as prerequisites for higher Version 5 routes. The live PeopleCert requirements should be checked before changing course.

Higher Version 5 modules develop product, service and transformation responsibilities

The Version 5 qualification scheme extends beyond Foundation into modules for product, service, experience, transformation, strategy and AI governance, with designation routes such as Managing Professional and Strategic Leader. These are not merely longer versions of Foundation. They are intended to develop responsibility for managing value across products, services, organizational change and strategy.

The ITIL Transformation Version 5 exam belongs when discussing organizational change and capability development. PeopleCert describes the higher module as training-led and uses a different examination model from Foundation, which reinforces the need to check the live module requirements rather than generalize from one exam.

A professional should select higher modules from role scope. Product-oriented practitioners need to understand how offerings are designed and managed. Service leaders need end-to-end operational and customer value thinking. Transformation leaders need to coordinate change, capability and adoption. Strategic paths require broader organizational judgment.

ITIL practices become useful when applied to real service behavior

Certification can become too abstract if candidates study every term without connecting it to an operating service. A stronger method is to choose a service—identity access, collaboration, payments, customer support or an internal platform—and trace common events through it. An incident, service request, change, problem or monitoring signal should trigger different decisions and ownership patterns.

Understanding ITIL 4 in modern service management remains useful for understanding why the framework is applied alongside cloud and agile delivery rather than only in traditional service desks. The version has a transition date, but many of the operational problems it addresses remain current.

Scenario practice should emphasize outcomes. Restoring service quickly may be urgent, but a repeated incident still needs deeper analysis. A change can improve reliability while introducing risk. A request workflow can be automated, but only if access, approval and fulfillment controls remain appropriate. These are management judgments, not vocabulary contests.

Renewal means the credential is connected to continuing development

PeopleCert's current ITIL certification model uses a renewal cycle rather than assuming a credential remains current forever. Foundation Version 5 is presented with a three-year renewal horizon and continuing professional development options. Candidates should understand the maintenance requirement when they budget for certification and when they decide which later modules will count toward their professional development.

Renewal makes sense in a field where automation, platform operating models, AI, security and customer expectations change how services are designed and managed. The useful question is not simply how to accumulate points, but which learning activities address the candidate's actual responsibilities. A service owner may prioritize governance and product management, while an operations leader may need reliability, measurement and incident-response depth.

Organizations can support this by treating ITIL learning as part of role development instead of a one-time onboarding badge. Practical improvements, formal learning and higher credentials can reinforce one another when they are chosen around real service outcomes.

A 2026 study plan should state the version before selecting materials

The most important administrative habit is to put the intended version at the top of the study plan. A candidate preparing for Version 5 should use the current Version 5 syllabus, terminology and official materials. An ITIL 4 holder considering a bridge should use the bridge learning objectives. Someone completing an approved ITIL 4 route during the coexistence period should monitor the sunset schedule and voucher validity closely.

Older editorial material can still be valuable when it explains durable service-management ideas. Understanding ITIL 4 Foundation provides historical and conceptual context, but exam preparation must follow the version actually booked.

Before purchasing any module, confirm eligibility, training requirements, exam format, renewal rules and transition dates with PeopleCert. This avoids the two main 2026 errors: studying an older generation without realizing Version 5 is live, or discarding a valid ITIL 4 credential before the official transition rules require it.

Organizations planning a Version 5 transition should inventory existing ITIL 4 knowledge before sending everyone through new training. Some practitioners may need the Foundation Bridge, while others may benefit more from role-specific Version 5 modules as they become relevant. The coexistence period is an opportunity to map old terminology to the new framework deliberately, preserve useful practices and update only what actually changes.

Service-management transitions also need governance. Teams should record which Version 5 practices are adopted, which ITIL 4 terms remain in operating documentation during coexistence, and how internal training will be updated. A controlled transition prevents mixed terminology from becoming a source of process confusion during incidents, changes, service reviews and supplier conversations.

ITIL's current transition rewards careful version management. Version 5 is the new foundation for candidates beginning the framework, ITIL 4 remains valid during the planned coexistence period, and bridge or transition routes allow experienced holders to move forward without erasing prior learning. A strong study plan names the exact version, follows PeopleCert's live rules and practices service-management decisions in realistic operating scenarios. During the ITIL 4-to-Version 5 transition, candidates should keep framework concepts separate from exam-generation facts. Practices such as value focus, service relationships, continual improvement, and governance may remain useful across versions, while module names, syllabi, prerequisites, and assessment rules must be taken from the version actually booked.
