HPE6-A90 Aruba Central: Managing Modern Wired Networks
HPE6-A90 is the current HPE Networking Central exam for the HPE Advanced Product Certified - HPE Aruba Networking Central credential. Its focus is operational: HPE says the exam evaluates the essential knowledge and skills needed to manage, monitor, and optimize wired networks using HPE Aruba Networking Central. The current preparation path also ties the exam to Central network management, wired-management workflows, and introductory AOS-10 knowledge.
The exam contains 50 questions, runs for 90 minutes, and uses a 70 percent passing score. HPE targets networking professionals and technical specialists who want to build real skill with the Central platform. That makes preparation different from studying a generic network-management product. Candidates should understand what Central is trying to accomplish—consistent intent, scalable configuration, visibility, and lifecycle operations—and how those abstractions map back to the behavior of individual network devices.
Aruba Central sits inside the broader HPE Aruba Networking certification family rather than replacing foundational network knowledge. A strong Central administrator still needs to understand VLANs, links, routes, clients, and access policy. The platform makes those elements easier to manage across many devices, but it does not make their technical behavior disappear.
Central changes the operating model from device-by-device work to managed intent
Without centralized management, administrators often repeat the same changes across switches, maintain separate local configurations, and compare devices manually when behavior drifts. Central can organize networks so common configuration is expressed once and applied consistently. The operational benefit is not merely fewer clicks; it is the ability to make state more predictable across a fleet and to see where a device has diverged from the intended configuration.
That benefit introduces a new responsibility. A change made centrally can affect far more devices than a local CLI edit. Candidates should understand the scope of groups, sites, labels, templates, or other organizational constructs used in the environment and know how a proposed change will propagate. Good Central operations combine scale with deliberate blast-radius control.
Naming and organizational consistency become surprisingly important at scale. Sites, groups, device labels, and configuration contexts should communicate real operational meaning so that an engineer can predict scope before applying a change. Poor organization turns a centralized platform into a larger source of ambiguity; good organization makes ownership, geography, role, and change impact easier to understand.
Onboarding must establish identity, ownership, licensing, and the right configuration context
A device appearing in a cloud portal does not mean it is ready for production. The onboarding workflow needs to place the device under the correct account, licensing or subscription context, group, site, and configuration model. Mistakes at this stage can produce confusing symptoms later because the switch may be online while inheriting policy intended for a different location or role.
A useful lab therefore begins before configuration. Add or claim a device, place it in the intended organizational structure, verify connectivity to Central, and confirm that the device receives the expected management state. Then move it between contexts and observe which configuration changes follow. That makes the relationship between inventory, grouping, and operational intent concrete.
Connectivity to the cloud service should also be treated as a dependency with its own troubleshooting path. DNS, time, internet reachability, certificates, firewall policy, and device software can influence whether a switch checks in correctly. When onboarding fails, confirm those prerequisites before repeatedly removing and re-adding the device from the management account.
Wired configuration still depends on sound switching fundamentals
Central can create and deploy port configuration, VLANs, uplink behavior, and other wired settings, but the network still forwards frames according to switching and routing rules. A Central candidate should be able to inspect a policy and predict what the local switch will do. Otherwise, troubleshooting becomes an exercise in searching the interface rather than understanding the network.
The current HPE6-A86 Switching Associate exam is a useful neighboring body of knowledge because it focuses directly on AOS-CX routing and switching. For people responsible for both platform management and device behavior, Central knowledge and switching knowledge reinforce each other: one expresses intent at scale, while the other explains the forwarding outcome on the wire.
Template reuse should never erase legitimate site differences. A branch with one uplink, a campus closet with redundant uplinks, and a lab environment may share common policy while needing different interface or routing details. Design inheritance so that common intent stays common and exceptions remain visible, documented, and narrow instead of copying entire configurations for every location.
Monitoring becomes valuable when topology, health, and client data are interpreted together
Central can aggregate device state, client information, events, utilization, topology, and alerts. The challenge is deciding which signal matters for a particular incident. A high utilization alert may be relevant to user complaints, or it may simply reflect an expected backup window. A client-health symptom may originate in authentication, DHCP, DNS, RF, switching, or upstream routing. The platform supplies evidence; the operator still has to form and test a hypothesis.
Use monitoring views comparatively. Check whether the same symptom affects one port, one switch, one site, or many sites. Compare a failing client with a healthy client on the same access device. Look at state before and after a configuration change. This turns dashboards into a diagnostic workflow rather than a collection of status tiles.
Historical data is often as valuable as the current dashboard. If a complaint began at a known time, compare device health, client counts, alerts, and configuration changes before and after that point. Temporal correlation can reveal whether an incident followed a deployment, a link degradation, or a client-population change and can prevent teams from chasing conditions that existed long before the outage.
Configuration governance is as important as configuration creation
Centralized tools can make network change fast, which means they can also make mistakes fast. Administrators should know how the organization approves changes, stages them, verifies the result, and rolls back when the outcome differs from the plan. A good change record explains the intended behavior, the devices or sites affected, the validation method, and the criteria for reversal.
This discipline matters especially in campus environments where wired and wireless services depend on common infrastructure. The current HPE6-A85 Campus Access Associate and HPE7-A01 Campus Access Professional exams emphasize the operational network around Central. Those skills help a Central administrator understand whether a platform change produced the intended client experience instead of merely reaching a “configuration successful” state.
Access control to the management platform deserves the same rigor as access to devices. Administrator roles should match responsibilities, shared privileged accounts should be avoided where possible, and important actions should be attributable. A centralized system with broad reach is a high-value control point, so identity and auditability are operational safeguards as well as security requirements.
Identity and access policy often intersect with Central-managed networks
Central provides management and visibility, while products such as ClearPass provide identity-aware access decisions. The two solve different problems. When a user is authenticated but placed into the wrong role, the evidence may span both the policy engine and the access infrastructure. Administrators need enough cross-product understanding to know which system owns which part of the outcome.
The HPE6-A88 ClearPass exam covers the NAC and identity-policy side in depth. For HPE6-A90 candidates, the practical lesson is to avoid changing network configuration when the problem is actually policy, and to avoid changing policy when Central already shows that the local port, VLAN, or reachability state is wrong.
Central supports switching careers but does not define the switching career ladder
HPE’s current switching certifications remain separate from the Central product credential. A person focused on switch implementation can progress from HPE6-A86 toward the HPE7-A08 Switching Professional exam. Central expertise can make that engineer more effective in a managed enterprise, but the certification goals are different: one validates product-management workflows and the other validates deeper switching capability.
That separation helps candidates choose preparation effort intelligently. If the hard problems in the job involve templates, onboarding, monitoring, multi-site consistency, and fleet operations, HPE6-A90 is directly aligned. If the hard problems are routing behavior, topology, convergence, or complex switching faults, device-level switching study should take priority.
Readiness means being able to move from Central intent to local evidence and back again
A practical HPE6-A90 lab should start with a small set of managed switches and a clear desired state. Organize the devices, apply common configuration, monitor adoption, connect clients, and record the normal health and topology views. Then create controlled faults: place a device in the wrong context, break an uplink VLAN, alter a port policy, or create a client connectivity problem. Use Central to identify the fault domain, then verify the local device behavior.
The candidate is ready when the platform no longer feels like a set of menus. It should feel like a model of the network: devices have ownership and context, configuration has scope, clients create observable sessions, health data supports hypotheses, and every large-scale action has a validation plan. That operational mindset is what makes Central useful in production and what gives HPE6-A90 practical value.
After every lab change, inspect both the platform view and the device result. Confirm that Central believes the change succeeded, then verify interface or forwarding state locally. If the two disagree, investigate the synchronization path rather than assuming one view is authoritative. This habit is particularly valuable when troubleshooting partial deployments or devices that have been offline.
Build a small operational runbook as part of study. Include the normal onboarding checks, the first views used for a client complaint, the evidence required before a configuration push, and the steps used to confirm that a device returned to healthy state after maintenance. Writing the runbook forces platform knowledge into an executable sequence and exposes gaps that are easy to miss while passively reading documentation.
