F5CABR BIG-IP Administrator Recertification Exam Guide

F5CABR is the current F5 BIG-IP Certified Administrator recertification exam. F5 introduced it as the renewal route for candidates who have previously achieved F5-CA, including candidates whose credential is in renewal, grace, inactive, or expired status. The exam replaces the old practice of using 201 for administrator renewal.

F5 currently lists F5CABR as a 60-minute exam with 50 items, a scaled passing score of 245, and online or test-center delivery. Candidates who have previously earned F5-CA can use the renewal exam regardless of when the original certification was achieved, subject to F5 program rules. Another renewal option is to pass the five current BIG-IP Administration exams.

Recertification should not be treated as a memory test about the old 101/201 sequence. The current administrator model covers installation and upgrade, data-plane concepts and configuration, control-plane administration, and support/troubleshooting. Renewal preparation therefore needs a broad operational review that reflects how BIG-IP is administered today.

F5CABR exists specifically for previously certified administrators

Eligibility is different from the five CAB exams used to earn the administrator credential. F5CABR assumes you have held F5-CA and are refreshing that status. New candidates should use the current five-exam route rather than attempting the recertification exam as a shortcut.

If your certification has been expired for a long time, verify your account status and current F5 rules before scheduling. F5 states that the renewal exam can reactivate expired F5-CA credentials, but administrative eligibility and account details should always be confirmed in the official portal before payment.

Recertification candidates often have uneven experience because their daily role may emphasize only part of BIG-IP. Someone managing mature LTM services may rarely install images; another administrator may perform upgrades but seldom troubleshoot application TLS. Begin with a self-assessment across the current five-domain model and allocate more lab time to tasks you have not performed recently rather than reviewing familiar material uniformly.

The five current CAB domains provide the best review framework

Organize recertification study around the current administrator responsibilities: installation and initial setup in F5CAB1, data-plane concepts in F5CAB2, configuration in F5CAB3, control-plane administration in F5CAB4, and support/troubleshooting in F5CAB5.

This structure is especially useful for administrators certified under the older 101/201 model. Instead of trying to recall a retired syllabus, compare your current skills with the new domain boundaries and update areas that changed or were previously less explicit.

Use one integrated scenario to connect the domains. Start with a newly deployed system, secure management access, license and provision it, configure an application service, form an HA pair, make a controlled change, create a backup, then diagnose a failure. This exposes dependencies that disappear when each objective is studied separately and makes the newer certification structure easier to relate to older operational experience.

Installation and lifecycle knowledge should include recovery

Review management connectivity, secure administrative access, licensing, module provisioning, software images, boot locations, backups, and upgrade planning. Recertification candidates may perform these tasks infrequently, which makes them easy to forget even for experienced traffic-management administrators.

Practice a complete maintenance workflow in a lab: record current state, create a configuration archive, verify HA health, prepare software, define validation and rollback, perform the change, and confirm service afterward. The exercise refreshes several domains at once and reveals gaps that passive reading may hide.

Administrators certified under an older program should pay particular attention to current software lifecycle practices. Product versions, delivery platforms, and exam structures change, but the operating principle remains: know the supported upgrade path, preserve rollback, and validate after change. Refreshing these procedures is more valuable than memorizing version-specific details likely to age before the next renewal.

Data-plane review should follow a connection end to end

Trace a client connection through listener matching, profiles, policies, persistence, pool selection, monitor state, address translation, routing, and server response. Explain where each decision occurs and what evidence would prove that stage succeeded. This creates a reusable mental model for configuration and troubleshooting questions.

If subnetting or routing has become rusty, revisit IPv4 subnetting and route selection. BIG-IP expertise cannot compensate for an incorrect return path, and many difficult-looking application issues become simple once the packet path is drawn accurately.

Revisit full-proxy behavior carefully. BIG-IP can create separate client-side and server-side connections with different addresses, ports, TCP characteristics, and TLS settings. That architecture explains why a capture on one side may not look identical to the other and why some optimizations or failures occur independently. Administrators who remember only end-to-end router behavior can misread these symptoms.

Control-plane review should emphasize trust and recoverability

High availability, configuration synchronization, authentication, management services, logging, archives, and device state determine whether administrators can operate BIG-IP safely. Review what is shared between peers, what remains local, how failover is controlled, and how a system can be restored after an unsuccessful change.

Test failover rather than assuming it works. Confirm synchronization before the test, move service deliberately, validate application behavior, and inspect the state afterward. Administrators who rarely experience outages can lose fluency in these procedures, making recertification a useful reason to rehearse them under controlled conditions.

Identity and logging integrations are easy to overlook because they often run quietly for years. During recertification preparation, test what happens if an external authentication source or log destination is unavailable. Confirm that emergency access is governed and that administrators can still retrieve the evidence needed to restore normal service without creating a permanent security exception.

Troubleshooting review should begin with evidence, not habits

Experienced administrators can develop favorite fixes that work often but obscure root cause. Recertification is an opportunity to reset the method: define scope, reproduce the issue, check object and resource state, follow traffic, review statistics and logs, capture packets when necessary, and change only what the evidence supports.

The general network troubleshooting principles remain relevant, but BIG-IP adds proxy behavior, monitors, persistence, profiles, and HA state. Practice distinguishing network, application, and device causes so experience becomes structured judgment rather than intuition alone.

Write down your most common production shortcuts and test whether they still reflect best practice. Years of experience can create speed, but it can also create assumptions based on an older BIG-IP version or an environment-specific convention. The recertification process is a good time to replace undocumented habits with current supported methods and a clearer evidence trail.

Security and application protocols should be refreshed together

Review administrative security as well as application-side TLS and HTTP behavior. Certificates expire, protocol policies evolve, and organizations disable older cipher suites or TLS versions over time. An administrator who was certified years ago may encounter security expectations that were less prominent in the original exam generation.

Use simple tools to inspect certificates, negotiated TLS, HTTP requests and responses, redirects, cookies, and common error codes. The objective is not specialist-level cryptography; it is being able to recognize when application delivery fails because transport security or HTTP behavior differs from what the BIG-IP configuration expects.

Renewal candidates should also revisit certificate operations: chain trust, hostname matching, expiration, private-key handling, and the separation between client-side and server-side TLS. A certificate incident can arrive suddenly after years of stable service, and older habits may not match current organizational policy. Build a small renewal exercise in the lab, replace a certificate safely, validate both connection sides, and confirm monitoring detects the new expiration date so the lesson becomes operational rather than theoretical.

Choose between F5CABR and the five-exam renewal route deliberately

F5 permits administrator renewal through F5CABR or by passing the five current BIG-IP Administration exams. The shorter single recertification path may suit experienced administrators whose knowledge remains broad. The five-exam path may be useful for someone who wants structured re-learning across the newly separated domains.

The right preparation decision depends on your current skill gaps and program status, not on which option appears easier from the number of exams alone. Verify current costs, availability, and renewal rules in the F5 portal because administrative details can change independently of technical content.

Consider learning value as well as convenience. A single renewal exam can validate broad retained competence, while the five smaller exams can force a more systematic rebuild of knowledge after a long period away from hands-on administration. Neither route compensates for weak lab practice; whichever path you choose, the goal should be current operational fluency rather than the shortest administrative path.

Recertification should leave you more operationally current

Build a review lab that includes initial configuration, a basic application service, health monitoring, profiles, SNAT or routed return traffic, HA if possible, backups, logs, and a few deliberate failures. Keep notes on what you had forgotten and repeat those tasks until the sequence and reasoning are comfortable.

Within F5 certifications, renewal is most valuable when it refreshes real operating skill rather than merely extending a badge. F5CABR is a renewal assessment for administrators who already proved competence once; preparation should update that competence to the current program and current operational expectations.

After the exam, preserve the review lab and notes as an operational reference. Turn weak areas into recurring maintenance exercises, such as quarterly restore testing or periodic failover validation. That extends the value of the certification cycle beyond the test date and reduces the chance that important recovery skills disappear again between renewal periods.

Include current official documentation in the review cycle even if you have years of experience. Interfaces, defaults, supported methods, and certification requirements evolve. Comparing established habits with present guidance helps separate genuinely durable BIG-IP knowledge from procedures that were appropriate only for the software and program generation in which you first became certified.
