4A0-D03 Nokia SR Linux EVPN and Data Center Interconnect: Fabric, EVPN, and DCI Skills
Nokia 4A0-D03 is a current written exam in the Data Center Fabric Certification program. It focuses on SR Linux, Ethernet VPN services, and data center interconnect rather than on generic data-center vocabulary. Nokia currently lists it as a required written exam for the Data Center Fabric Network Expert path together with 4A0-D01 Data Center Fabric Fundamentals, so candidates should approach it as the advanced operational layer that sits on top of basic fabric concepts.
The exam is most useful when studied as a sequence of forwarding decisions. A fabric has to establish underlay reachability, advertise overlay information, build the right service state, and carry traffic across local and inter-site boundaries. Each layer can be healthy while another is broken. That is why 4A0-D03 rewards candidates who can connect BGP EVPN control-plane information to VXLAN or service forwarding behavior and then verify the result on SR Linux.
The underlay has to be boring before the overlay can be reliable
An EVPN fabric depends on stable IP reachability between the nodes that originate and terminate overlay tunnels. Before thinking about route types or MAC mobility, candidates should be able to explain the purpose of loopback addressing, point-to-point links, routing adjacencies, ECMP paths, and failure convergence in the underlay. The fabric is easier to troubleshoot when underlay health is treated as a separate question: can every relevant endpoint reach the addresses used to establish overlay control sessions and transport encapsulated traffic?
This separation prevents a common troubleshooting error. A missing MAC route can look like an EVPN problem even when the real cause is a broken routed path between tunnel endpoints. Likewise, a healthy underlay does not prove that tenant forwarding is correct. Build a verification sequence that starts with interface and routing state, confirms endpoint reachability, and only then moves upward into BGP EVPN and service state. The BGP mechanics studied in 4A0-114 BGP Fundamentals for Services provide useful context for understanding why an established session can still carry the wrong or incomplete routing information.
EVPN route types make more sense when tied to the state they advertise
Candidates often memorize EVPN route-type numbers without understanding what changes in the network when each route appears. A stronger method is to ask what information the control plane needs to distribute: endpoint reachability, Ethernet segment information, inclusive multicast information, IP prefixes, or other service state. When a route is missing, the troubleshooting question becomes concrete: which local condition should have caused it to be originated, and which policy or session should have carried it to remote peers?
That reasoning also helps with import and export behavior. Route targets, routing instances, and policy determine whether information learned in one part of the fabric becomes useful elsewhere. If the route exists in BGP but not in the intended service, the problem may be classification or import policy rather than neighbor formation. Study command output as evidence in a chain: originated route, advertised route, received route, imported route, programmed forwarding state. This approach is more durable than memorizing isolated commands because it mirrors how real incidents are investigated.
VXLAN and service mapping connect the EVPN control plane to actual frames
EVPN distributes reachability, but tenant traffic still needs a data-plane encapsulation and a service context. In SR Linux data-center designs, VXLAN provides the tunnel mechanism commonly associated with EVPN overlays. Candidates should understand how a local bridge domain or routed service maps to a VNI, how a remote endpoint is selected, and how the receiving node places decapsulated traffic into the correct tenant context. These mappings are where a syntactically correct configuration can still create silent forwarding failures.
A useful lab exercise is to trace one host-to-host flow from source access port to destination access port. Identify the local MAC lookup, the overlay next hop, the VNI, the remote VTEP, and the remote service lookup. Then break one element at a time: wrong VNI, missing route target, absent remote MAC state, or unreachable VTEP. The exercise teaches which verification point exposes each failure. The service concepts also overlap with the broader EVPN material in 4A0-115 EVPN Services, even though 4A0-D03 applies them in the SR Linux data-center context.
Multihoming requires candidates to understand Ethernet segments, not just redundancy
Multihoming lets a device or downstream network attach through more than one fabric node, but the control plane has to coordinate those attachments to avoid duplicate forwarding and unstable MAC learning. Ethernet Segment Identifiers, designated-forwarder behavior, all-active versus single-active models, and split-horizon logic are all pieces of that coordination. Study them as mechanisms that answer three operational questions: who may forward toward the multihomed site, how remote nodes learn the attachment, and how loops are prevented.
Failure scenarios are particularly valuable. If one link fails, what state changes locally and what EVPN information changes remotely? If a designated forwarder changes, which traffic direction is affected? If two nodes disagree about the Ethernet segment, what symptom appears first? Working through those cases forces the terminology into a coherent model. It also highlights why redundancy testing must include both control-plane convergence and actual application traffic rather than relying only on interface-up indicators.
MAC mobility, proxy ARP, and duplicate detection protect fabric stability
Data-center endpoints move, restart, and sometimes appear from more than one location because of configuration mistakes or loops. EVPN includes mechanisms that help the network distinguish legitimate mobility from persistent duplication. Candidates should understand why sequence information matters, how a remote node updates its preferred path when an endpoint moves, and why repeated movement can indicate a fault rather than normal workload mobility. Proxy ARP or related suppression behavior adds another optimization layer by reducing unnecessary flooding for known IP-to-MAC relationships.
The operational challenge is to avoid treating every changing MAC entry as the same event. A virtual machine moving between servers, a dual-attached endpoint, a loop causing duplicate advertisements, and a stale control-plane entry can produce superficially similar symptoms. A good diagnostic process correlates the local bridge table, EVPN routes, neighbor information, Ethernet-segment state, and event history. The exam becomes easier when each feature is studied together with the failure it is designed to prevent.
Data center interconnect extends the problem beyond one fabric
DCI introduces a boundary between local fabric behavior and inter-site reachability. The design may need to extend selected Layer 2 services, carry routed tenant prefixes, preserve isolation, and interoperate with service-router infrastructure. Nokia specifically positions 4A0-D03 around SR Linux EVPN and DCI, so candidates should be comfortable explaining how site-local information becomes usable across a wider transport domain without assuming that every local detail should be flooded everywhere.
Interoperability matters because data-center fabrics do not exist in isolation. A DCI path toward Nokia 7750 SR infrastructure brings service-routing concepts into the conversation: BGP policy, service identifiers, next-hop reachability, and consistent tenant mapping. Verification should therefore cross the platform boundary. Confirm what SR Linux advertises, what the external router accepts, and how the return path is built. A one-way success is not a successful DCI design; asymmetric policy or missing reverse reachability can produce partial failures that are easy to misdiagnose.
Troubleshooting should move from control-plane evidence to forwarding evidence
A disciplined incident workflow prevents random configuration changes. Start by defining the failing traffic and the expected path. Verify physical and routed reachability. Check BGP EVPN session state and the exact route relevant to the endpoint or prefix. Confirm that the route is imported into the intended service, that the VNI or tunnel mapping is correct, and that forwarding state exists. Finally, generate traffic and observe counters or packet behavior at the points where the path could diverge.
This method also makes it easier to distinguish local from remote faults. If a route is originated correctly but never received at another node, investigate advertisement policy and session transport. If it is received but not imported, investigate route-target and service configuration. If it is imported but packets still fail, look at data-plane mapping, access configuration, encapsulation, or MTU. Each observation narrows the search space and reduces the temptation to change multiple unrelated settings at once.
Hands-on SR Linux practice should emphasize repeatable state verification
Configuration practice matters, but 4A0-D03 is not best prepared for by typing a finished reference configuration repeatedly. Build small topologies in which you can predict the control-plane and forwarding state before running a command. Add an EVPN service, explain which routes should appear, verify them, and then intentionally create a mismatch. That cycle trains the exact skill needed in production: turning an architecture expectation into observable evidence.
Keep notes around state transitions rather than command lists. Record what changes when a host appears, a link fails, a peer is withdrawn, an Ethernet segment changes designated forwarder, or a remote prefix is introduced. This produces a compact troubleshooting playbook that is more useful than a large collection of copied output. The broader Nokia certifications inventory can help place the exam in context, but the preparation target should remain the SR Linux EVPN and DCI behavior actually tested here.
A final review should integrate underlay, overlay, service, and inter-site logic
Near exam day, stop reviewing topics as independent chapters. Work through end-to-end scenarios that require several layers at once: a new endpoint becomes reachable across the fabric, a multihomed server loses one attachment, a tenant prefix must cross the DCI, or one site receives an EVPN route that it should not import. For each scenario, state what should be true in the underlay, BGP EVPN table, service table, tunnel state, and forwarding path.
That integrated review exposes weak assumptions quickly. If you can describe why the expected state should exist and which command or counter would disprove your hypothesis, you are studying at the right level. 4A0-D03 is less about remembering a catalog of EVPN features than about understanding how a fabric turns distributed control information into deterministic forwarding—and how an engineer proves that each stage is working.
