QSSA2018: From a Release-Specific Exam to Current Qlik Sense Administration
QSSA2018 is the release-specific code associated with the Qlik Sense System Administrator certification from the June 2018 generation. It should not be treated as the label for the current exam. Qlik now publishes a version-neutral Qlik Sense System Administrator certification with 50 questions, 90 minutes, and a 62 percent passing score, focused specifically on client-managed Qlik Sense Enterprise rather than Qlik Cloud administration.
The older code remains useful because the administrator’s core responsibilities are durable: design an environment, install and configure the platform, manage users and applications, secure access, monitor services, and troubleshoot failures that cross operating-system, network, proxy, directory, and Qlik boundaries. The broader Qlik certifications still separates administrative work from Business Analyst and Data Architect responsibilities.
For a learner maintaining an older training plan, the right approach is to retain those operational principles while verifying every procedure against the current Qlik Sense Enterprise version. A release-specific screen or service detail can age; architecture, evidence-based troubleshooting, and controlled change management remain valuable.
Administration starts with an explicit environment architecture
A Qlik Sense environment is easier to operate when each node and service has a defined purpose. Administrators should understand the central node, rim nodes where used, proxies, repository services, engines, schedulers, and the dependencies that connect them. Capacity, resilience, maintenance windows, and user geography can all influence the topology.
Architecture also includes infrastructure outside Qlik. DNS, certificates, Windows services, storage, network routes, directory services, load balancers, and firewall rules can determine whether a Qlik component appears healthy to a user. The lesson from layered connectivity troubleshooting is useful: prove the path in order rather than assuming every browser error is a Qlik application problem.
Document dependencies in a way that another administrator can follow during an outage. A diagram should show not only nodes but also which services communicate, which names and ports are expected, and which external systems provide identity or data connectivity.
Installation is a security and identity exercise as much as a software task
Installing Qlik Sense Enterprise requires decisions about service accounts, certificates, hostnames, repository access, and administrative roles. Those choices affect later upgrades and troubleshooting. Reusing powerful domain accounts because they are convenient may solve installation friction while creating unnecessary privilege and audit risk.
The principle of least privilege as an architecture principle applies to service and administrator identities. Give accounts the rights required for their function, document why those rights exist, and avoid informal privilege expansion that no one later knows how to remove.
Certificates deserve the same discipline. Expiration, hostname mismatch, trust-chain problems, and proxy configuration can all produce symptoms that look like product failures. Administrators should know where certificates are used, who owns renewal, and how to distinguish a TLS problem from an application authorization problem.
Directory integration should be tested as a data flow
Qlik administrators often depend on corporate identity sources. A directory connector is not just a checkbox; it is a recurring data flow that imports users and attributes the security model may depend on. If an organizational unit changes, an attribute becomes inconsistent, or a sync fails, access behavior can change even though Qlik services remain online.
Active Directory concepts matter because group membership and trust relationships influence authorization decisions. Active Directory trust relationships are discussed in a security context, but the operational lesson is broader: identity dependencies cross system boundaries. Administrators should know which directory attributes Qlik consumes and how to verify them independently.
Test normal users, administrators, new users, removed users, and changed group membership. A healthy sync should produce predictable identity and entitlement outcomes, not merely a successful task status.
Security rules need understandable ownership and test cases
Qlik Sense security rules can become difficult to manage when many exceptions accumulate. Administrators should define rules in terms of business roles and resources, keep conditions readable, and avoid overlapping patterns whose combined effect is understood only by one person. Before a change, identify which users and resources should gain or lose access.
Testing needs negative cases. Confirm not only that a sales manager can access the intended stream but also that a user outside the group cannot. Check whether users can duplicate, export, publish, or administer objects beyond the original requirement. Security is about capabilities, not just visibility.
Where row-level data restrictions are required, the data-model side of row-level security must be coordinated with administrative access controls. Hiding a sheet is not a substitute for restricting the underlying data.
Proxies, DNS, and load balancing form the user-facing path
Users reach Qlik through names, routes, proxies, and sometimes external load balancers. Troubleshooting should therefore follow the request path. Resolve the hostname, verify the expected address, confirm that the port is reachable, validate the certificate, check the proxy or load-balancer rule, and only then move deeper into Qlik services.
DNS failures can make healthy services look broken. An administrator who changes Qlik configuration before proving name resolution can create a second problem while leaving the original one untouched.
Load balancing also needs health criteria. Sending traffic to a node because the operating system responds to a basic probe is not enough if the Qlik service required for the user path is unavailable. Monitoring should reflect the actual application dependency.
Monitoring should establish baselines before incidents happen
Good monitoring answers whether the environment is behaving normally, not merely whether a service is running. Administrators should observe CPU, memory, disk, service health, reload duration, engine behavior, user concurrency, task queues, repository symptoms, and error rates over time. A baseline turns “it feels slow” into a measurable change.
The value of monitoring baselines before an outage transfers directly to Qlik. If normal reloads take eight minutes and suddenly take twenty-five, that signal deserves investigation even if every scheduled task still finishes.
Logs should be correlated by time and component. When several services report errors after one dependency fails, the first meaningful error often matters more than the largest number of later messages.
Alerting should reflect impact as well as raw events. A single transient warning may need observation, while repeated task failures, repository unavailability, or a sustained increase in engine pressure deserves escalation. Defining thresholds from a known baseline helps operators distinguish normal variation from a developing incident.
Reload failures need ownership across Qlik and data sources
A failed reload may originate in Qlik, a data connection, credentials, source availability, schema changes, storage pressure, or script logic. Administrators should distinguish platform failures from application or source failures so the issue reaches the right owner quickly.
Start with the scheduler and task status, then inspect the reload log and source connectivity. If a database field was renamed, restarting Qlik services is unlikely to help. If every reload fails after a certificate or credential change, debugging one application script at a time is equally inefficient.
Clear ownership reduces mean time to recovery. Define which team maintains Qlik services, which team owns each source, and how evidence is handed off when the fault boundary is outside the Qlik platform.
Backup and recovery should cover configuration, not only application files
A recoverable Qlik deployment requires more than copies of user-facing apps. Administrators need a supported plan for repository data, certificates, shared content, configuration, custom extensions where applicable, and the information required to rebuild nodes. The exact procedure depends on the deployed Qlik version and architecture, so current documentation should govern execution.
The warning that backups are not a disaster-recovery plan is important. Recovery objectives, dependencies, restore order, credentials, and infrastructure availability determine whether backup files can actually return the service to operation.
Test recovery in a controlled environment. A restore procedure that has never been exercised is still a hypothesis, and Qlik environments often depend on external identity, DNS, certificates, and data sources that a file-level backup cannot recreate.
Upgrades should be treated with the same operational discipline. Before changing versions, record the topology, authentication dependencies, proxy behavior, certificates, extensions, reload schedules, and integrations that must still work afterward. Test representative applications and access rules in a controlled environment, define a rollback point, and recheck monitoring after the change. Administration is not complete when an installer finishes; it is complete when the platform’s important behaviors have been verified again.
Prepare by operating a small environment through failure and recovery
A useful lab includes a client-managed Qlik Sense environment with at least one data connection, directory or user-management scenario, security rule, scheduled reload, and monitored service path. Record a baseline, then introduce controlled failures such as a bad hostname, expired credential in a test connection, denied permission, or stopped service. Diagnose each one from evidence.
Pair the administrative view with the current Business Analyst and Data Architect roles. Administrators support the platform those roles depend on, but they should not solve every application problem by changing infrastructure. Knowing where administration ends and modeling or analytical design begins is part of mature operations.
QSSA2018 is best retained as historical context for the client-managed administrator role. New candidates should study the current certification objectives, while using the older exam’s enduring lessons: explicit architecture, controlled identity, secure rules, observable services, disciplined troubleshooting, and recovery procedures that have been tested rather than assumed.
