Omnissa Certifications for Horizon and Workspace ONE Professionals
Omnissa has established a role-based certification program around the two product families at the center of its digital-work platform: Horizon and Workspace ONE. The current path spans Administrator, Engineer, Design Engineer, and Expert levels. That structure is useful because end-user computing work changes significantly as a professional moves from day-to-day administration into troubleshooting, architecture, and cross-platform design.
The current Administrator credentials are Omnissa Certified Administrator – Horizon (OCA-H) and Omnissa Certified Administrator – Workspace ONE (OCA-W). The Engineer level adds OCE-H and OCE-W, which Omnissa launched on December 10, 2025. Design Engineer credentials then validate large-scale design and integration capability for each product family, while the Omnissa Certified Platform Engineer represents the expert level across both Horizon and Workspace ONE tracks.
Candidates should also note two program changes that affect older study plans. Omnissa removed mandatory training prerequisites for new certifications on August 29, 2025, although courses remain recommended. Legacy OCAP and Specialist exams are retired, while unexpired legacy credentials remain valid until their expiration and can still be honored as prerequisites for higher levels. Current planning should therefore use Omnissa’s live certification map rather than an older VMware-era sequence.
Administrator credentials establish the operating foundation
The Administrator level is designed around the skills required to keep Horizon or Workspace ONE environments functioning day to day. For Horizon, that includes understanding virtual desktop and application delivery, pools, assignments, components, user access, and routine platform operations. For Workspace ONE, the focus shifts toward unified endpoint management: enrollment, profiles, applications, compliance, device lifecycle, security policy, and the administrative workflows used to support a diverse endpoint population.
Candidates should build repeatable operational tasks in a lab or controlled environment. Create a user or device assignment, apply policy, validate the expected result, and then deliberately introduce a failure. The value comes from observing where state is recorded and which console evidence explains the outcome. An administrator who can verify policy application and trace a failed deployment is more prepared than one who knows only where a configuration screen is located.
Engineer-level certifications emphasize troubleshooting and optimization
OCE-H and OCE-W move beyond routine administration. Omnissa describes the Engineer level as validation of advanced troubleshooting and optimization expertise for Horizon and Workspace ONE environments. That means candidates should be comfortable forming a hypothesis from symptoms, collecting logs and platform evidence, isolating the affected layer, and applying a change that addresses the cause rather than merely suppressing the visible symptom.
For Horizon, practice should include connection flow, desktop and application availability, profile behavior, resource constraints, protocol symptoms, image or agent issues, and dependencies such as identity or networking. For Workspace ONE, exercises should include enrollment, device communication, profile and app deployment, compliance evaluation, certificates, directory integration, and troubleshooting across console, device, and service boundaries.
Engineer-level labs should start from a known-good baseline and then introduce one fault at a time. Capture the expected user experience, the management-plane status, the relevant logs or telemetry, and the corrective action. Once single-fault diagnosis is reliable, combine issues such as identity, policy, network, resource, and endpoint conditions. This creates the layered troubleshooting discipline that an engineer needs when the first visible symptom does not identify the failing component.
Design Engineer work starts with requirements, scale, and failure domains
The current Design Engineer level includes Omnissa Certified Design Engineer – Horizon and Omnissa Certified Design Engineer – Workspace ONE. These credentials are intended to validate design and integration of large-scale environments for scalability and reliability. The mindset is different from troubleshooting one broken endpoint: the architect must define requirements, capacity, dependencies, security boundaries, availability objectives, operational ownership, and lifecycle processes before selecting a detailed design.
A good design exercise begins with business constraints. How many users or devices must be served, from which locations, with what applications, identity sources, network paths, security controls, and recovery objectives? Which services can tolerate interruption, and which need redundancy across failure domains? Document assumptions and decision criteria so the architecture can be defended and revisited when requirements change.
OCPE connects Horizon and Workspace ONE into an expert platform view
Omnissa positions the Certified Platform Engineer as its highest recognition and requires completion of both the Horizon and Workspace ONE tracks. That makes sense for architects responsible for enterprise-scale digital work because virtual desktops, applications, physical endpoints, identity, security policy, and user-experience management increasingly interact. An expert must understand not just two products, but the boundaries and integration points between them.
Cross-platform design should consider how users move between managed devices, virtual desktops, SaaS applications, and corporate resources. Identity and access policy, device posture, application delivery, data protection, user experience, monitoring, and support workflows should reinforce one another. A design that is technically elegant in one product but creates operational conflict in the other is not an expert solution.
The retirement of OCAP and Specialist exams changes legacy roadmaps
Older VMware- or Omnissa-era training plans may still reference OCAP or Specialist exams. Omnissa now identifies those exams as legacy and retired. Existing unexpired credentials remain valid until expiry and can be honored for prerequisites, but new candidates should follow the current Administrator, Engineer, Design Engineer, and Platform Engineer structure. This is an important current-versus-legacy distinction because historical credential names remain visible on résumés and in archived training content.
Professionals holding legacy credentials should preserve them accurately while updating current capability. Record the product version and role represented by the older credential, then map current skills to the new Omnissa path. If the daily job has moved into modern Horizon, Workspace ONE UEM, digital employee experience, or platform integration, current training should focus on those responsibilities rather than repeating outdated exam material simply because the badge name is familiar.
Training is recommended, but experience remains part of the preparation model
Omnissa no longer makes training a mandatory prerequisite for new certifications, but its learning page still recommends role-specific courses. That policy gives experienced professionals more flexibility while leaving structured training available for people who need it. The important point is that bypassing a course should not mean bypassing the underlying skills. Exam guides can reveal topics that a candidate has not encountered in a narrow production role.
Omnissa also notes that recommended courses cover most, but not all, exam topics and that hands-on experience is needed. Use that as a preparation rule: combine the exam guide, relevant product documentation, structured training where useful, and practical exercises. A candidate should be able to perform and troubleshoot the task, not merely remember how an instructor demonstrated it.
Certification logistics are standardized across the current program
Omnissa currently uses Clarus to browse and register for credentials, with exam scheduling through Pearson VUE. The learning site states that all current certification exams cost $250 and that Omnissa credentials are valid for two years from the issue date. Those facts matter when planning a multi-level path because several exams can represent a meaningful time and budget commitment, and credential currency must be maintained as the platform evolves.
Plan exam timing around experience milestones instead of booking every level at once. An Administrator exam makes more sense once routine operations feel natural; an Engineer exam should follow substantial troubleshooting practice; a Design Engineer exam should come after exposure to architecture tradeoffs and scale. Spacing the path this way lets each credential validate a real expansion of responsibility.
Because current Omnissa credentials have a two-year validity period, certification planning should include a currency strategy rather than ending at the exam result. Record the credential version and expiration date, watch the current learning catalog for program changes, and schedule refresh work while the product is still familiar. This is especially useful during a period of product and branding transition, when an older VMware-era study plan may no longer describe the current Omnissa credential structure.
Choose Horizon, Workspace ONE, or both according to the service you own
Horizon specialists should focus on virtual desktops and applications, delivery architecture, user experience, image and application management, capacity, protocol behavior, and the infrastructure dependencies that support sessions. Workspace ONE specialists should deepen unified endpoint management, application deployment, compliance, identity integration, device security, and lifecycle operations across operating systems. These are related digital-work disciplines, but they require different technical depth.
Professionals responsible for the whole employee-computing platform can deliberately build both tracks and work toward OCPE. The strongest preparation record is not a collection of exam attempts; it is evidence that the person can operate, troubleshoot, design, and integrate the services users depend on. Recheck Omnissa’s live learning page before scheduling because the program is still relatively new and legacy transitions can continue to affect names, prerequisites, and current guidance.
For professionals spanning both product families, build a shared scenario rather than two isolated labs. Follow one user from device enrollment and policy evaluation through identity, application access, and a virtual desktop or published application. Then introduce a failure at one boundary and determine which platform owns the next diagnostic step. That exercise makes the OCPE-style cross-platform perspective concrete and highlights the handoffs that are easy to miss when Horizon and Workspace ONE are studied separately.
