OGEA-10B TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Bridge: Moving from TOGAF 9 Certified to the Current Practitioner Path
OGEA-10B is the current TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Bridge examination from The Open Group. It is designed specifically for people who already hold TOGAF 9 Certified and want to add the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner qualification based on the body of knowledge drawn from the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. The bridge recognizes prior certification rather than making experienced candidates repeat the entire regular Foundation-to-Practitioner route.
The current exam summary lists 14 questions in 60 minutes. The assessment combines ten simple multiple-choice questions with four scenario-based questions, and the overall pass mark is 60%, or 18 points from a maximum of 30. The scenario section uses gradient scoring and provides the relevant open-book reference. The Open Group states that there is currently no set withdrawal date for the bridge and that 18 months’ notice will be given before withdrawal, so candidates should treat OGEA-10B as an active path rather than assuming it has expired.
The bridge starts from recognized knowledge instead of zero
The rationale for OGEA-10B is straightforward: TOGAF 9 Certified holders have already demonstrated both Foundation and Level 2 knowledge for Version 9.2. The current Practitioner body of knowledge contains continuity as well as new and expanded material. The bridge focuses on the delta that matters for moving into the newer certification portfolio instead of retesting the complete earlier syllabus.
That makes credential verification important. OGEA-10B is not a shortcut for someone who has merely worked with TOGAF 9 or passed a Foundation-only examination. The Open Group describes pre-existing TOGAF certification as a requirement for this route, specifically the TOGAF 9 Certified qualification. Candidates without that status should follow the regular OGEA-101 and OGEA-102 route or the combined path.
Study the changed structure of the standard before drilling exam questions
A bridge candidate should begin by comparing the way the 10th-Edition standard is organized with the Version 9.2 material they know. The newer standard separates fundamental content from a broader set of guidance and makes it easier to use topic-specific material without treating the framework as one monolithic book. This structural change affects how architects find and apply guidance even when familiar core concepts remain.
Build a delta notebook rather than rewriting old TOGAF notes. For each topic, mark it as substantially familiar, changed in emphasis, newly expanded, or new enough to require full study. This protects preparation from two opposite mistakes: relearning everything from scratch or assuming everything is identical because familiar terms remain.
The purpose of the bridge is best served when the candidate can explain what they would do differently in current practice. If a change in the standard only exists as a memorized bullet, it is harder to apply when a scenario asks for architecture judgment.
The ten knowledge questions establish the updated conceptual base
The first portion of the bridge contains ten simple multiple-choice questions. These items check whether the candidate has absorbed the Level 1 bridge outcomes needed to work with the current body of knowledge. With only ten questions, every weak area can have a noticeable effect on the total score, so candidates should not treat this part as an easy warm-up before the scenarios.
Use concise comparisons: previous understanding, current formulation, and practical consequence. Where terminology is unchanged, confirm whether scope or guidance changed. Where a concept is newly emphasized, connect it to the ADM and architecture work. The goal is to make updated ideas as automatic as the TOGAF 9 concepts the candidate already knows.
The four scenario questions test whether the update can be applied
The bridge’s Practitioner portion contains four complex scenario questions. Like other TOGAF Level 2 assessments, responses are gradient scored, so more than one option can contain a defensible element. The candidate must choose the response that best applies the current method and body of knowledge to the circumstances described.
Experienced TOGAF 9 practitioners can be vulnerable to answering from habit. If an organization has used one tailored process for years, the familiar action may feel correct even when the exam scenario expects current portfolio guidance. During practice, explicitly separate “what my organization does” from “what the current TOGAF body of knowledge supports.” Real-world experience is valuable only when it is mapped back to the exam’s defined concepts.
The open-book reference in the scenario portion is most useful when the candidate already recognizes the relevant topic. Practice locating updated material quickly, verifying the key point, then returning to the case. Reading long passages under time pressure can obscure the business problem the question is actually asking you to solve.
Current Practitioner work still revolves around applying the ADM in context
The certification portfolio describes the current Practitioner as someone able to develop, maintain, and use Enterprise Architecture following the TOGAF ADM. Bridge preparation should therefore preserve the method as a coherent cycle while updating how it is supported by the newer standard. Do not reduce the 10th Edition to a list of new documents or labels.
Take a transformation you understand and run it through the ADM at a high level. Identify stakeholders, Architecture Vision, domain work, opportunities, migration planning, implementation governance, and change management. Then ask where the newer guidance changes how you would approach modularity, topic-specific guidance, or the use of supporting material. This exercise makes the bridge practical.
Stakeholders, requirements, governance, and change remain connected disciplines
A mature architect rarely works with one concept in isolation. Stakeholder concerns influence scope and views; requirements evolve through architecture work; governance makes decisions accountable; implementation provides evidence about conformance; and change management determines when new architecture work is justified. Bridge scenarios can combine these dimensions, so revision should combine them too.
Use short cases in which a new strategic priority appears after architecture approval, a delivery team proposes a deviation, or a stakeholder concern emerges during implementation. Decide what must be assessed, who should participate, and which ADM or governance mechanism controls the response. Then verify that reasoning against the current body of knowledge.
The regular Part 2 route is different from the bridge even though both lead to Practitioner
A Foundation holder follows OGEA-102 to reach Practitioner. A new candidate can take OGEA-101 and OGEA-102 or the OGEA-103 combined exam. OGEA-10B exists because TOGAF 9 Certified already represents a substantial prior achievement. Its syllabus and format are therefore designed around bridging, not around being a shorter version of the ordinary Part 2 exam.
This distinction matters when choosing preparation resources. A general OGEA-102 course may teach valuable current Practitioner skills but can spend time on material the bridge assumes. A bridge-specific plan should deliberately identify the gap between credentials and then use broader Practitioner material only where it deepens application.
Do not postpone the bridge based on an invented retirement date
Certification discussions sometimes assume that every older path disappears as soon as a newer standard is released. The Open Group’s current portfolio explicitly continues to support both Version 9.2 and 10th-Edition learning paths, and its FAQ says there is no set withdrawal date for the Enterprise Architecture bridge at the time of writing. It also promises 18 months’ notice before the route is withdrawn.
That does not mean candidates should delay indefinitely. Training availability, employer requirements, personal project timelines, and future portfolio changes can all affect the best time to certify. The correct conclusion is narrower: make decisions from current official status rather than rumor. If the bridge is the right route today, prepare for the published exam rather than an unannounced replacement.
Bridge candidates should also review the terminology used by the current certification portfolio. Familiar Version 9.2 language may still be valid, but newer modular guidance can change where a topic is documented or how practitioners are encouraged to consume it. When a term seems unchanged, confirm its current context instead of assuming identical treatment. This is especially important for experienced architects whose memory is reinforced by years of organization-specific templates.
A practical comparison matrix can use four columns: Version 9.2 understanding, current body-of-knowledge treatment, consequence for architecture work, and evidence source. Populate it only for meaningful differences. The matrix becomes a compact review artifact and prevents bridge study from expanding into a full rewrite of TOGAF.
Finally, test the update through conversation. Explain one changed or expanded area to another architect without using notes, then ask how it would alter a real engagement. If the explanation stops at “the new standard says,” the knowledge is still too shallow. The bridge is intended to validate usable current competence, not historical recall plus a list of new headings.
Start by confirming the TOGAF 9 Certified credential and reading the current bridge syllabus. Build a topic-by-topic delta map, then test it with short knowledge questions. Once the updated concepts are stable, add scenario practice that forces comparison among plausible actions. Use the open-book reference only after predicting the governing principle so lookup remains targeted.
Keep an error log with three categories: forgotten update, incorrect carryover from Version 9.2, and scenario judgment. The fix for each category is different. A forgotten update needs focused review; an incorrect carryover needs a side-by-side comparison; a judgment error needs more scenario analysis. This makes preparation efficient for experienced candidates who do not need to relearn the entire framework.
Readiness means you can explain both continuity and change. You should be able to describe how your existing TOGAF 9 knowledge maps into the current Practitioner role, identify the newer or expanded areas that matter, and apply them without defaulting to organizational habit. At that point OGEA-10B becomes what it was designed to be: a focused bridge between recognized prior competence and the current enterprise-architecture certification path.
