DP-750 Azure Databricks Data Engineer: Governing and Operating Lakehouse Workloads

DP-750, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Azure Databricks, is a current exam in the Microsoft certifications portfolio for Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate. It targets engineers who configure Databricks environments, secure and govern Unity Catalog, prepare and transform data, and deploy and maintain data pipelines and workloads.

As of October 3, 2026, DP-750 is current. Microsoft’s active March 11 blueprint divides the exam into environment setup, Unity Catalog security/governance, data preparation and processing, and pipeline/workload deployment and maintenance. An English objective update is scheduled for October 19, so candidates testing after that date should use the updated Microsoft outline.

The exam expects strong SQL and Python skills plus familiarity with software-development lifecycle practices such as Git. It also assumes awareness of Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Monitor. The reason is practical: Databricks data engineering sits inside a larger cloud operating model rather than inside notebooks alone.

Compute selection is an engineering decision about workload shape

Databricks provides different compute options for interactive development, jobs, SQL workloads, and serverless experiences. DP-750 expects candidates to choose and configure compute based on workload requirements, including node types, autoscaling, runtime versions, pools, acceleration features, and access permissions.

The smallest cluster is not always cheapest if it makes work run for hours, and the largest cluster is not automatically fastest if the workload is bottlenecked by skew, I/O, or inefficient code. Engineers should understand how Spark distributes work and how partition count, shuffle behavior, caching, and data layout interact with compute resources.

Auto-termination and job-specific compute can control cost, while interactive clusters support development convenience. Production jobs should be designed for reproducibility so a pipeline does not depend on manually installed libraries or settings known only to one engineer.

Unity Catalog provides the governance model for data and AI assets

Unity Catalog organizes objects into catalogs and schemas and governs access to tables, views, volumes, and other securable resources. DP-750 includes creating those objects, applying naming and environment conventions, configuring external connections, and managing data-definition operations.

The important design question is how isolation maps to business ownership and environments. Separate catalogs can represent domains or environments, while schemas provide additional organization. A random naming structure may work in a small lab but becomes difficult to govern as hundreds of tables and teams appear.

Unity Catalog also supports discovery and lineage. Clear descriptions, ownership, tags, and dependencies help users understand which assets are authoritative and how data flows between systems. Governance works best when metadata is maintained as part of engineering rather than added during an audit.

Security includes privileges, identities, row filters, masks, and data sharing

DP-750 expects candidates to grant privileges to users, groups, and service principals; use managed identities and secrets; configure row-level and column-level controls; and apply attribute-based access policies where appropriate. These controls need to be layered carefully because a user may have access to a workspace but still be restricted from specific data objects.

Service identities should receive only the permissions a pipeline requires. Long-lived personal tokens create operational risk because employees change roles and credentials expire. Managed identities or service principals provide cleaner ownership for automated workloads when supported.

Delta Sharing introduces another boundary: data can be shared across organizations or platforms without exporting uncontrolled copies. Engineers need to understand which objects are shared, how recipients authenticate, and how revocation or policy changes affect access.

Data modeling in a lakehouse still depends on access patterns

DP-750 covers ingestion design, file and table formats, partitioning, slowly changing dimensions, and modeling in Unity Catalog. Delta tables are central because they add transactional and schema-management capabilities over cloud object storage, but engineers still need to decide how tables are partitioned and maintained.

Partitioning can reduce scan cost when queries filter consistently on a suitable key, but overpartitioning creates excessive small files and metadata overhead. Modern Databricks optimization features reduce some manual work, yet the engineer should still understand data distribution and workload behavior.

Slowly changing dimensions matter in analytical systems where history must be preserved. Type 1 updates overwrite prior values, while Type 2 patterns maintain historical versions. The choice should reflect reporting requirements rather than habit.

Batch and streaming pipelines should converge on reliable Delta data

Azure Databricks supports both batch and streaming data engineering. Candidates need to choose ingestion tools and loading modes, transform with SQL or Python, and write data using reliable table formats. The same business dataset may receive historical batch loads and continuous updates, so schema and merge behavior need to remain consistent.

Structured Streaming adds checkpoints, state, triggers, and failure recovery. Exactly-once outcomes usually depend on the combination of source semantics, checkpointing, and idempotent sinks rather than on a single setting. Engineers should know how to replay or recover data without creating duplicate business records.

Lakeflow and other managed pipeline capabilities can reduce boilerplate, but they do not remove the need to define quality rules, ownership, and service-level expectations. A managed pipeline still fails if its source schema changes unexpectedly or a downstream table violates assumptions.

Data quality should be expressed as rules and monitored as behavior

Production pipelines need expectations around nulls, uniqueness, ranges, relationships, and permitted values. When quality rules fail, the system should either quarantine bad data, reject the batch, or record a controlled exception according to business requirements.

Silent correction is risky because it can hide upstream defects. For example, replacing every missing value with zero may make a pipeline succeed while changing the business meaning of a metric. Data engineers should work with domain owners to decide which transformations are legitimate.

Quality metrics also help detect drift. A sudden change in record count, null percentage, or category distribution may indicate a source-system problem before users report incorrect dashboards.

Delta Lake maintenance is another practical part of operating a lakehouse. Frequent small writes can create many small files, while poorly clustered data can force queries to scan far more data than expected. Compaction, data-layout optimization, retention decisions, and statistics should be applied according to workload evidence. Cleanup policies also need care because removing old files too aggressively can interfere with time-travel or recovery expectations.

Engineers should also understand how schema enforcement and schema evolution interact. Rejecting every schema change can stop legitimate source evolution, but accepting arbitrary changes can corrupt downstream assumptions. Controlled evolution means deciding which changes are compatible, recording them in source control or contracts, and validating that dependent tables and jobs still behave correctly.

Deployment and maintenance bring DevOps practices into Databricks

DP-750 includes Git, deployment, pipeline maintenance, workload troubleshooting, and operational practices. Notebooks and SQL files should be versioned like other software. Production releases need review, testing, and environment-specific configuration rather than manual copy-and-paste deployment.

Jobs should expose parameters and dependencies explicitly. Secrets should live in appropriate secret stores rather than source code. Libraries and runtime versions should be controlled so a job behaves consistently after a cluster is recreated.

Monitoring should capture job duration, failed tasks, cluster behavior, data volumes, and relevant application logs. Engineers need to distinguish a code failure from a capacity issue, permissions problem, or source-system outage before changing the platform.

Lineage is particularly useful during troubleshooting. When a downstream table suddenly changes, the engineer should be able to trace its source tables, jobs, notebooks, and recent deployments. Unity Catalog lineage and ownership metadata reduce the time spent asking which team created an object or where a field originated. They also make access reviews more meaningful because administrators can see how sensitive data propagates through derived assets.

DP-750 and DP-700 represent different current data-engineering centers of gravity

DP-700 focuses on Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake, Fabric pipelines, notebooks, eventstreams, warehouses, lakehouses, and workspace governance. DP-750 focuses on Azure Databricks and Unity Catalog. Both require data ingestion, transformation, security, monitoring, and operational reliability, but the platform objects and workflows differ.

An organization may use both Fabric and Databricks. In that case, engineers should understand which platform owns ingestion, transformation, governance, semantic serving, and business intelligence. Duplicate pipelines across both systems increase maintenance unless responsibilities are explicit.

The Fabric Data Engineer Associate is therefore an adjacent but distinct credential. Choose DP-750 when Databricks is the center of daily engineering work rather than selecting it only because both exams contain the phrase data engineer.

Workload isolation is another operational concern. Interactive exploration, scheduled production pipelines, and SQL serving can compete for compute if they share resources carelessly. Separating critical jobs from experimentation, applying quotas or permissions, and selecting serverless or job-specific compute where appropriate can make performance more predictable. Engineers should design for the busiest expected period rather than assuming autoscaling will compensate for every form of contention.

Preparation should also include permissions and governance failures. Remove a privilege from a pipeline identity, change ownership of a catalog object, or introduce a row-filter rule and observe how the workload fails. These exercises make the Unity Catalog security model tangible and help candidates distinguish authentication, authorization, data-quality, and compute failures when several symptoms appear at once.

Hands-on preparation should include failures, not only successful notebooks

A strong DP-750 lab creates a workspace, chooses compute, configures Unity Catalog objects, secures them, ingests batch and streaming data, transforms it with SQL and Python, writes Delta tables, and deploys a scheduled workload. Then deliberately introduce a failed permission, schema change, skewed dataset, late event, or broken dependency and diagnose it.

Broader Databricks skills are most valuable when they connect configuration to runtime behavior. Practice reading Spark execution evidence and job logs, comparing cluster settings with workload characteristics, and explaining a failure from evidence rather than treating every problem as a reason to restart a cluster.

Check the Microsoft blueprint again for exam dates on or after October 19, 2026. DP-750 is ultimately about operating a governed Azure Databricks data platform: configure compute, control data, build pipelines, deploy changes, and keep workloads reliable as volume and team complexity grow.
