AZ-802 Administering Windows Server: The Current Hybrid Administrator Exam

AZ-802, Administering Windows Server, is the current Windows Server administration exam in the Microsoft certifications portfolio. Microsoft positions it around deploying, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting Windows Server across on-premises, Azure, and hybrid environments. That makes it broader than a traditional server-operations test: candidates need to connect Active Directory Domain Services, Hyper-V, storage, networking, security, monitoring, and Azure management services into one operational model.

As of October 3, 2026, AZ-802 is current and Microsoft lists no retirement date. It is now the exam associated with Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate. That current structure matters because the older AZ-800 and AZ-801 exams retired on September 30, 2026. Their historical material can still explain parts of the technology, but candidates preparing for a new attempt should organize their work around the AZ-802 blueprint rather than treating the old two-exam model as current.

Microsoft’s current outline is unusually operational. It covers AD DS, hybrid Windows Server management, virtual machines, networking, storage and file services, infrastructure security, and monitoring/troubleshooting. The exam therefore rewards administrators who understand how a decision in one layer affects the rest of the environment. A DNS problem can look like an authentication failure, a storage problem can surface as a virtual-machine performance issue, and a poorly scoped Group Policy can create service disruption that appears unrelated to policy at first glance.

Active Directory remains the identity foundation of the exam

AZ-802 starts with Active Directory Domain Services because hybrid Windows Server administration still depends heavily on identity, authentication, replication, policy, and trust. Candidates should be comfortable deploying and managing domain controllers, including domain controllers hosted in Azure, and should understand why site topology, replication links, Flexible Single-Master Operations roles, and read-only domain controllers exist. Memorizing which wizard creates a domain controller is not enough; the administrator needs to understand what happens when replication is slow, a site link is misconfigured, or a role holder becomes unavailable.

Multi-domain and multi-forest environments add another layer of reasoning. Trust relationships determine where authentication can cross boundaries, while site design influences replication and logon behavior. Security principals, service accounts, delegation, and protected administrative identities need to be managed with least privilege in mind. A service account that has excessive rights can become a lateral-movement path, and an administrator who cannot distinguish a user problem from a secure-channel problem will spend too much time troubleshooting symptoms rather than causes.

Group Policy is also central. Candidates should know how policies and preferences are processed, how inheritance and precedence work, and how to diagnose why an expected setting did or did not apply. Real administration often requires reading the result of policy processing rather than assuming the Group Policy object itself is correct. That same practical mindset applies to authentication protocols such as Kerberos, domain-controller hardening, password policies, and recovery through tools such as the Active Directory Recycle Bin or Directory Services Restore Mode.

Hybrid management means treating Azure as an extension of Windows Server operations

AZ-802 does not ask administrators to abandon familiar Windows Server tools. Instead, it expects them to combine those tools with services such as Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Azure Update Manager, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, and Windows Admin Center. The important skill is knowing which control plane should own a task and how to keep management consistent when servers live in different places.

Azure Arc is especially important because it allows servers outside Azure to participate in Azure-based management and governance. An administrator can bring inventory, monitoring, policy, security posture, and extension-based capabilities to hybrid machines without moving the underlying workload. That model is useful for organizations that will remain hybrid for years rather than treating on-premises infrastructure as a temporary exception.

The same operational discipline applies to patching and configuration. Maintenance windows, restart behavior, dependency ordering, and compliance reporting matter more than simply knowing that an update service exists. Windows Admin Center can centralize many management tasks, while PowerShell remains essential for repeatable administration. Candidates who need to strengthen automation fundamentals can benefit from reviewing common Windows PowerShell commands in the context of actual server operations rather than memorizing syntax in isolation.

Virtualization spans both Hyper-V and Azure virtual machines

The virtualization objectives require candidates to work across Hyper-V and Azure. On Hyper-V, that includes virtual machine configuration, virtual disks, networking, checkpoints, high availability, integration services, replication, and resource settings such as memory or processor allocation. A technically valid configuration can still be operationally weak if it cannot be recovered, patched, or migrated safely.

Azure virtual machines add cloud-specific decisions such as availability zones and sets, managed disks, resizing, scale options, network configuration, Azure Bastion, and just-in-time access. These capabilities are not separate from Windows Server administration; they shape how an administrator protects and operates the guest systems. A VM with strong guest security but unrestricted management access is still exposed, while a highly available Azure placement does not compensate for a poorly designed Windows service dependency inside the machines.

The broader AZ-104 exam goes deeper into Azure administration as a platform, but AZ-802 expects enough Azure fluency to manage Windows Server confidently in that platform. For AZ-802 candidates, the useful distinction is role focus: AZ-104 administers Azure broadly, while AZ-802 applies cloud and hybrid services to Windows Server identity, compute, file services, security, and troubleshooting.

Networking questions are usually about dependable name and address resolution

Windows Server environments depend on reliable DNS and IP addressing, and AZ-802 reflects that reality. Candidates should be able to configure DNS zones and records, forwarding, conditional forwarding, DNS integration with AD DS, hybrid name resolution, and DNS security extensions. A hybrid design often fails when different teams assume another system owns name resolution, so administrators need a clear view of which DNS servers answer which zones and how queries traverse on-premises and cloud boundaries.

DHCP objectives include scopes, reservations, high availability, and troubleshooting. These features look basic until an outage affects hundreds of clients. Administrators must distinguish address exhaustion from relay problems, routing faults, incorrect exclusions, duplicate addressing, or name-resolution failures. The exam’s networking scope is not intended to turn a Windows administrator into a dedicated network architect; it tests whether the administrator can keep the services on which Windows workloads depend operating reliably.

Hybrid troubleshooting also requires understanding the boundary between Windows configuration and Azure networking. Network security groups, virtual network routing, private addressing, firewall rules, and VPN or ExpressRoute connectivity may sit outside the server itself while still determining whether the server can authenticate, replicate, update, or reach a file service. Strong candidates build a dependency map before changing settings.

Storage and file services combine classic Windows capabilities with Azure Files

Storage objectives cover local and clustered technologies such as disks and volumes, Storage Spaces, Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica, Data Deduplication, SMB, iSCSI, NTFS, ReFS, BitLocker, and storage quality-of-service controls. These features differ in purpose: Storage Spaces Direct aggregates local disks for software-defined storage, Storage Replica provides block-level replication, and Data Deduplication reduces repeated storage consumption. The exam expects candidates to choose and operate them based on workload requirements rather than treating every feature as interchangeable.

File services add permissions, File Server Resource Manager, Distributed File System, SMB over QUIC, and Azure Files. Hybrid file architectures often use Azure File Sync to preserve familiar server access while tiering data to Azure. That can simplify branch or distributed file services, but it introduces new monitoring and recovery considerations. Administrators should understand the difference between protecting access to a share, synchronizing file content, and creating an actual backup or disaster-recovery strategy.

Encryption also spans layers. BitLocker can protect volumes, while access control lists govern who can reach files and folders. Azure Files has its own identity and authorization choices. A mature design aligns these controls instead of assuming that one encryption mechanism substitutes for identity, permissions, auditing, or recovery.

Security is operational hardening, not a separate checklist

AZ-802 includes Windows security baselines, Microsoft Defender, firewall configuration, Credential Guard, application control, exploit protection, Local Administrator Password Solution, domain-controller hardening, and authentication controls. These technologies are most useful when administrators understand the attack paths they are meant to reduce. Disabling legacy behavior or tightening administrative access can break dependencies if changes are applied without testing, but leaving insecure defaults in place because change feels risky creates a larger long-term problem.

Least privilege should be visible everywhere: service accounts, administrative groups, delegated directory permissions, Azure roles, file access, and remote-management pathways. Just-in-time VM access and Bastion can reduce exposure of management ports, while managed identities and protected service identities reduce password handling. Security is strongest when the administrator can explain who needs access, to what resource, for what duration, and through which audited path.

Hybrid environments also require consistent visibility. Defender for Cloud can surface posture and recommendations across supported resources, while Windows-native controls protect the operating system and directory. The exam rewards candidates who treat these as complementary layers rather than competing products.

Monitoring and troubleshooting are where the separate domains come together

The monitoring objectives include Performance Monitor, data collector sets, event logs, Windows Admin Center, System Insights, Azure Monitor data collection rules, alerts, and VM Insights. The practical skill is not merely opening a graph; it is choosing evidence that can confirm or reject a hypothesis. CPU pressure, storage latency, memory exhaustion, replication failures, network loss, and authentication problems leave different traces.

Troubleshooting sections cover connectivity, name resolution, Windows Update, time synchronization, VM and Azure Arc extensions, disk encryption, storage, replication, Kerberos, secure channels, and domain recovery. These topics reward disciplined isolation. For example, a failed domain logon may involve DNS, time skew, a broken computer-account trust, unavailable domain controllers, or Kerberos configuration. Randomly changing settings increases the number of variables and makes recovery harder.

Administrators should practice forming a small set of likely causes, collecting evidence, making one controlled change, and validating the result. That process is transferable across almost every objective in AZ-802 and is closer to real Windows Server work than memorizing long command lists.

Prepare by building and breaking a small hybrid environment

The strongest preparation environment does not need to resemble a global enterprise. A few Windows Server virtual machines can support a domain, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, file services, Hyper-V experiments, and recovery exercises. Connecting one or more servers to Azure services through supported hybrid tooling adds the cloud-management layer. The goal is to observe behavior: what changes when a domain controller is unavailable, what happens when DNS forwarding is wrong, how permissions combine, and which logs explain a failed operation.

Use the current Microsoft skills outline as the boundary of preparation. Because AZ-802 consolidates responsibilities that used to be divided across AZ-800 and AZ-801, older material should be treated as background rather than as the current exam structure. The most valuable study sessions connect multiple domains—for example, deploying a file service, securing its identities, monitoring it, introducing a fault, and then recovering it.

AZ-802 is ultimately an administrator exam. Success depends on understanding how Windows Server behaves under normal operations and failure, then using both on-premises and Azure tools to keep identity, compute, networking, storage, security, and monitoring coherent. Candidates who can explain the dependencies between those systems are better prepared than candidates who know each feature only as a separate definition.
