Airport Master Firefighter Exam: Preparing for the ACE AMF Designation
The Airport Master Firefighter exam sits at the intersection of aircraft rescue and firefighting operations, airport regulation, emergency management, and the administrative knowledge needed to function inside an airport environment. It is not a general structural-firefighter test. The program is designed for experienced ARFF personnel and expects candidates to connect firefighting practice with the specific operational responsibilities created by an airport, its movement areas, aircraft hazards, federal rules, and emergency plans.
The current program deserves special attention because AAAE announced a 2026 change: Airport Master Firefighter has been rebranded into the Airport Certified Employee family as ACE Airport Master Firefighter, with new 2026 study material. The underlying AMF identity remains recognizable, but candidates should prepare from the current material rather than assuming that older supplements are still the complete study set. The broader AAAE certifications inventory provides the organizational context for this designation.
AAAE describes AMF as the first level of its ARFF professional designation path. Passing demonstrates that a candidate understands the ARFF body of knowledge well enough to manage demanding airport-fire responsibilities and has a working grasp of airport administration and management. That combination explains why preparation must go beyond apparatus, extinguishing agents, and tactics.
Confirm eligibility before building a study schedule
The AMF program is experience-based. AAAE currently requires documented airport-firefighter experience, completion of a qualifying basic ARFF training program, and specific National Incident Management System courses. The organization also allows a defined substitution of structural-firefighting experience for some ARFF experience, but the substitution is not a shortcut around the rest of the prerequisites. Candidates must provide documentation and obtain the required departmental verification during registration.
That process matters because the certification is intended to validate professional capability, not to serve as an entry-level introduction to airport firefighting. Someone who has never worked around aircraft, movement areas, fuel hazards, airport communications, or Part 139 operating requirements would be missing much of the context that gives the exam questions meaning. Experience turns the regulations and standards into operational decisions rather than isolated facts.
Before paying for study resources, compare your records with the current application requirements. Confirm that certificates show the correct course versions, that experience dates are documented, and that your supporting letter comes from the appropriate fire chief or lead ARFF official. Administrative omissions can delay a candidate even when the person is technically ready for the test.
Know the current exam format and the 2026 material change
AAAE describes the AMF examination as 150 multiple-choice questions with up to three hours to complete the test. A score of 70 percent or better is required. The exam is delivered online through the certification platform, and sessions are recorded under the program’s current exam procedures. Candidates should review the live instructions before scheduling because technical and conduct requirements can change independently of the content outline.
The more important 2026 update is the study-material refresh. AAAE’s review-course announcement says the program has been rebranded as ACE AMF and that the class and exam are based on new 2026 material. Older pages on the AAAE site still contain historical references to the A.M.F. supplement and earlier editions, so a candidate should not build a final study plan by collecting whichever PDF or book list appears first in a search result.
Use the current certification platform as the controlling source for assigned material. Treat legacy resources as background only when they remain consistent with the new material. This is especially important for regulations, advisory circulars, terminology, and program structure. An older question bank can create false confidence if it trains recall against a superseded reference.
Part 139 knowledge must be connected to ARFF decisions
Airport firefighting operates inside a regulatory system. AMF preparation has historically emphasized portions of 14 CFR Part 139 that address rescue and firefighting, hazardous substances and materials, and the airport emergency plan. The exam therefore rewards candidates who can move from a rule to its operational consequence. Instead of memorizing a section number alone, ask what the requirement changes about staffing, readiness, response, training, inspections, communications, or coordination.
For example, aircraft rescue and firefighting capability is not just a statement that fire service must exist. It affects response readiness, vehicle capability, training, and the relationship between the fire department and airport certificate holder. Hazardous-material requirements connect to fuel, storage, handling, spill response, and scene safety. Emergency-plan requirements connect ARFF to law enforcement, emergency medical services, mutual aid, airport operations, and command.
Build a regulation matrix with three columns: requirement, operational owner, and evidence of compliance. This forces you to think like a senior ARFF professional. If a question describes a deficient process, you can identify whether the problem is training, equipment readiness, airport planning, documentation, or command rather than choosing an answer because a familiar phrase appears.
FAA advisory material explains how airport-specific hazards are managed
AMF study material also draws on FAA advisory circulars and airport-specific guidance. Topics historically include protection of evidence after an aircraft accident, programs for training ARFF personnel, and operation and qualification for specialized ARFF vehicles and high-reach extendable turrets. These subjects are practical because an airport firefighter may have to preserve a scene for investigators while simultaneously protecting life, managing hazards, and restoring safe airport operations.
Study advisory material by purpose. Ask why the FAA issued the guidance, which operational problem it is intended to solve, what actions the fire department controls, and where coordination with another authority is required. Evidence protection, for instance, is not about placing investigation ahead of rescue. It is about avoiding unnecessary disturbance after immediate life-safety and hazard-control needs have been addressed.
Vehicle and HRET material should also be studied as a system. Know the operational advantage of specialized reach and agent application, but also the training, positioning, communication, and safety concerns that accompany it. A technically capable vehicle does not reduce the need for command discipline.
Airport administration is part of the AMF identity, not filler
One reason AMF is different from a narrow fire-service examination is its inclusion of airport administration and management. Senior ARFF personnel operate inside a business and regulatory environment that includes operations, security, maintenance, finance, administration, public communication, legislative concerns, and air-service considerations. A fire officer may not own these functions, but decisions made by ARFF can affect them and be affected by them.
Airport operations knowledge helps a candidate understand why movement-area control, closures, inspections, wildlife, construction, and emergency response cannot be managed independently. Finance and administration matter when equipment replacement, staffing, training, and mutual-aid agreements require planning and justification. Communications matter during incidents because inaccurate information can affect passengers, media, airlines, regulators, and the airport’s recovery process.
For study, connect each administrative topic back to an ARFF scenario. If a vehicle is out of service, what operational and regulatory consequences follow? If construction changes access routes, who needs to be involved? If a major incident closes a runway, how does ARFF information flow into airport command and public communication? This approach turns broad airport content into usable knowledge.
Use incident command to integrate technical and administrative knowledge
The required NIMS coursework signals an important expectation: AMF candidates should be able to place ARFF actions inside a structured incident-management model. Aircraft incidents can grow quickly and involve airport operations, mutual-aid departments, EMS, police, airline representatives, federal investigators, and other agencies. Command structure provides a common way to define objectives, assign functions, manage span of control, and transfer or unify command when necessary.
During preparation, take major topics and ask where they live in an incident. Fire suppression, rescue, triage, hazardous-material control, perimeter control, evidence preservation, and resource staging may be simultaneous priorities. The best answer is often the one that protects life while preserving command coherence and regulatory responsibilities.
Scenario practice is particularly useful here. Write short incidents involving an aircraft fire, fuel spill, disabled aircraft, or mass-casualty event. Identify the first priorities, the required coordination, the likely airport operational impact, and the records or notifications that follow. You do not need to invent exotic events; realistic airport incidents provide enough complexity.
Build your final review from the official material outward
Because AAAE has introduced new 2026 ACE AMF material, the final review should start with the content assigned in the certification platform and the current review-course outline. Create a map of those resources, then add your local SOPs only as practical examples. Local procedures are valuable, but an airport may operate more conservatively than the minimum standard or use different terminology. The exam is based on the program’s body of knowledge, not on one department’s preferred method.
Use repeated retrieval instead of rereading. Close the book and explain the purpose of each Part 139 topic, the operational role of each advisory circular, the relationship between airport administration and ARFF, and the command implications of a complex incident. Then test yourself with timed multiple-choice sets so that three hours for 150 questions feels familiar rather than rushed.
The AMF designation is best viewed as evidence that an airport firefighter can connect technical response, regulation, command, and airport management. That is also the right way to prepare. Study the current ACE AMF material, verify that older references remain valid, and practice making decisions that account for the whole airport system rather than treating the exam as a list of isolated firefighting facts.
