AD0-E124 Adobe Experience Manager DevOps Engineer Expert: Current Exam and Operations Preparation
AD0-E124 is the current Adobe Experience Manager DevOps Engineer Expert path in Adobe’s certification catalog. Adobe also maintains an AD0-E124 prep guide and an AD4-E124 practice test, confirming that the role remains part of the active AEM certification structure. Candidates should still check the certification portal before booking for the latest delivery and scheduling details.
This exam sits at the intersection of AEM application delivery and platform operations. The strongest candidates understand Cloud Manager, build and deployment behavior, environment configuration, Dispatcher and web-tier concerns, monitoring, access administration, troubleshooting, and the practical handoff between developers, architects, and operations teams. It is not a generic DevOps exam with Adobe terminology added on top.
Within Adobe certifications, AD0-E124 is especially valuable for people responsible for making AEM changes repeatable and supportable across environments. Study should focus on the actual lifecycle of an AEM release: source change, build, quality checks, deployment, validation, monitoring, rollback or remediation, and the operational evidence needed to know whether the release is healthy.
Start with the release path from source control to production
A DevOps engineer should be able to describe what happens between a committed change and a working production deployment. That includes repository structure, build dependencies, pipeline stages, code quality checks, environment-specific configuration, deployment behavior, and post-deployment verification. If any step is a mystery, troubleshooting becomes guesswork because the engineer cannot isolate where the failure entered the system.
Practice tracing a change through several failure modes. A build may fail because of dependencies, a deployment may succeed while health checks fail, a configuration may work in development but not stage, or a Dispatcher change may block otherwise healthy content. For each case, identify the evidence you would inspect first and the smallest safe correction. Expert preparation is about diagnosis and control, not simply knowing which button starts a pipeline.
Cloud Manager should be understood as an operating system for delivery governance
Cloud Manager is central to AEM as a Cloud Service operations because it coordinates programs, environments, pipelines, code quality, deployments, and operational access. Candidates should understand how these pieces relate rather than learning them as separate menus. A pipeline exists within a program and targets environments; permissions determine who can perform actions; quality gates protect the release process from changes that fail required checks.
Build a simple operating model for a sample organization. Define who can initiate production deployments, who owns emergency fixes, which checks must pass, how stage validation occurs, and what evidence is required before release approval. This turns Cloud Manager from an interface topic into a governance topic and makes scenario questions easier to reason through.
Environment configuration should be explicit, source-controlled, and secure
Cloud applications need differences between development, stage, and production, but those differences should not become unmanaged manual changes. Study supported approaches for OSGi configuration, environment variables, secrets, and run-mode-aware behavior in the context of AEM as a Cloud Service. Understand which values belong in source control and which must be protected outside the repository.
Also practice the failure cases. A secret may be missing, a variable name may differ between environments, an OSGi configuration may not be selected as expected, or a configuration change may require a new deployment. The operational question is not only “how do I set the value?†but also “how do I prove which value the application actually received and change it safely?â€
Dispatcher and edge behavior can make a healthy AEM application appear broken
The web delivery layer controls caching, filtering, request routing, and access to application endpoints. A page that renders correctly on an author or publish instance can still fail for users because of Dispatcher rules, cache behavior, invalidation, headers, CDN behavior, or security filters. AD0-E124 preparation should therefore include request-path reasoning from the browser through the edge and web tier to AEM.
Create troubleshooting drills around stale content, unexpected 404 or 403 responses, cache misses, incorrect headers, and environment-specific routing. Identify which layer owns the symptom and what evidence would distinguish one cause from another. Avoid the habit of clearing all caches or relaxing filters as a first response; those actions can hide the real problem or create security risk.
Monitoring should answer operational questions, not merely collect logs
Logging and monitoring are useful only when the team knows what it is trying to detect. Define signals for deployment health, error rates, latency, external-service failures, queue or workflow problems, and application-specific business failures. Then decide which alerts require immediate action, which should create a ticket, and which are better reviewed as trends.
Use correlation in troubleshooting. A spike in errors after a deployment means something different from a slow increase across several days. A single failing endpoint may point to an integration, while broad latency may indicate a platform, cache, or application problem. Good preparation connects metrics, logs, deployment history, and user reports into one diagnostic picture.
Security and access control belong inside the delivery process
DevOps engineers handle privileges that can affect production systems, deployment pipelines, secrets, and operational data. Study role-based access, service identities, credential handling, and the principle of least privilege. Access should be granted to teams according to operational responsibility rather than accumulated permanently because someone once needed an emergency permission.
Make security part of deployment review. Ask whether new endpoints are intentionally exposed, whether Dispatcher rules protect administrative paths, whether secrets are logged, and whether automated jobs run with more privilege than they need. A pipeline that deploys reliably but weakens production controls is not a successful DevOps process.
Developer and architect collaboration prevents operational surprises
The DevOps role does not own every application decision. An AD0-E137 Sites Developer Expert may own deep implementation behavior, while an AD0-E117 Sites Architect Master is responsible for broader architecture and nonfunctional design. The DevOps engineer should make operational constraints visible early so those roles do not design features that are difficult to deploy, monitor, scale, or recover.
For practice, review a proposed integration or custom service and identify its operational contract: required configuration, secrets, health indicators, timeout behavior, retry strategy, logging, deployment dependency, and failure mode. If those items cannot be described, the solution is not ready to operate even if the code works in a developer environment.
Use broader DevOps knowledge only when it strengthens AEM operations
General DevOps responsibilities and skills such as automation, observability, collaboration, release discipline, and incident learning are useful context, but they must be applied to Adobe’s supported operating model. AEM as a Cloud Service removes or changes many infrastructure tasks that traditional self-managed platforms expose directly.
That distinction should shape study time. Do not spend most of your preparation on generic container administration or unrelated CI/CD tooling. Concentrate on the Adobe delivery path, supported configuration patterns, Cloud Manager, AEM request delivery, diagnostics, and the boundaries between what customers configure and what Adobe manages.
Prepare by running controlled failures and documenting recovery
A strong lab plan includes successful deployments and intentional failures. Break a configuration, introduce a build problem, create a cache rule that blocks a request, simulate an unavailable dependency, and observe the signals produced. Record how you detected the fault, how you isolated it, what you changed, and how you proved the service recovered.
Pair those labs with Adobe’s current AD0-E124 prep guide and practice test. Use the official domains to find gaps, but convert each gap into an operational exercise rather than another flashcard set. An Expert-level DevOps candidate should be able to explain the safest path from symptom to evidence to correction while preserving security, release governance, and service reliability.
Before booking, verify the active exam details in Adobe’s portal and review any updated scheduling instructions. The certification is most useful when preparation improves the way you operate AEM in production: smaller changes, clearer evidence, disciplined access, faster diagnosis, and fewer surprises between development and live environments.
Include change-management evidence in your labs. For every release, save the commit or version reference, pipeline result, configuration assumptions, smoke-test outcome, and any operational observation after deployment. When something fails later, that history allows the team to compare the system before and after a known change instead of relying on memory. It also makes post-incident review more useful because the organization can improve the process that allowed the defect through.
Capacity and reliability thinking should also appear in preparation. Ask what happens when traffic rises suddenly, an external dependency slows down, or an environment is unavailable during a release window. Identify which behavior should degrade gracefully and which requires a hard failure. DevOps engineering is stronger when service expectations are explicit before an incident rather than invented while users are already affected.
Finally, rehearse communication. Write a short incident update that states impact, evidence, current hypothesis, containment, and next diagnostic step without assigning blame. Expert operators often coordinate several specialists under time pressure; concise technical communication is part of restoring service safely because it keeps developers, architects, support teams, and business owners working from the same facts.
Also practice distinguishing a deployment defect from an environmental incident. Compare the same release across environments, confirm configuration and external dependencies, and use reproducible evidence before rolling back. That discipline prevents a healthy application change from being blamed for an unrelated service problem.
