ITIL ITILFND V4: ITIL 4 vs ITIL 5

ITIL 4 and ITIL Version 5 should be understood as stages in the same evolving body of guidance, not as two unrelated frameworks. PeopleCert describes Version 5 as an evolution that keeps existing ITIL knowledge relevant while extending the framework for digital product and service management, AI-enabled work, and a more explicit end-to-end lifecycle.

As of October 2026, both generations matter. ITIL Version 5 is available, including Foundation and transition routes, while PeopleCert says ITIL 4 remains available during a phased transition and plans to sunset ITIL 4 modules on December 31, 2027. Professionals therefore need to understand coexistence rather than assume an immediate replacement.

The practical question for learners and organizations using ITIL certifications is not simply “which version is newer?” It is which knowledge they already have, which role they are moving toward, which certification route is current for them, and how quickly their organization plans to adopt the Version 5 lifecycle and qualification structure.

Foundation remains the entry point

ITIL 4 Foundation established the service value system, guiding principles, four dimensions, service value chain, and core concepts that shaped the current generation of practitioners. Those ideas remain useful because Version 5 builds on rather than discards the value-oriented operating model.

Version 5 broadens product and lifecycle emphasis

ITIL 4 already encouraged organizations to think beyond traditional process silos, but Version 5 makes digital products and services even more explicit. PeopleCert presents Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, Transformation, and AI Governance as major elements of the qualification scheme.

Familiar practices remain visible

The change does not eliminate familiar operational disciplines. PeopleCert still names incident management, problem management, change enablement, service level management, continual improvement, monitoring, configuration, deployment, release, supplier management, and information security in the Version 5 Practice Manager scheme. ITIL practices therefore remain useful operating capabilities.

AI is more explicit in Version 5

AI appears more directly in the new framework and qualification ecosystem. PeopleCert positions Version 5 as AI-native by design and offers AI Governance as an extension path. That reflects the reality that service teams increasingly use AI for support, automation, analysis, content generation, and decision assistance.

The transition routes reduce unnecessary repetition

PeopleCert offers an ITIL transition path for experienced designation holders and a Foundation Bridge for ITIL 4 Foundation holders. These routes recognize that existing practitioners do not need to relearn every concept from the beginning.
