Another Change In The VMware Certification Program 2021: What Exactly And Why?
On this page
VMware certification announcements from 2021 were tied to product-specific training routes for virtualization, application modernization and digital workspaces. Those codes and replacement deadlines are historical: an exam that was expected to change in late 2021 cannot be treated as a current registration option. The substantive question for an infrastructure practitioner remains which platform they operate and whether they can deploy, secure, upgrade, monitor and recover it. Ownership and branding of the certification program have also evolved, so candidates should use the current VMware by Broadcom program and published job-role objectives, not the original 2021 announcement, when making a training decision.
Understand what the old VMware paths were measuring
The 2021 program differentiated people operating virtual data centers, automating cloud resources, developing applications and supporting end-user computing. These responsibilities overlap but should not be treated as one broad exam. A virtualization administrator might own clusters, host maintenance and workload availability. A platform architect may also need to design network segmentation, storage resilience and upgrade sequencing across multiple components.
Historic VCP, VCAP and VCDX labels helped express increasing specialization and design responsibilities. The labels alone never guarantee that an engineer can recover a broken cluster or troubleshoot application latency. For practical preparation, choose a production task, record the prerequisite settings and demonstrate how to validate the service after a change.
What was being revised in 2021 and 2022
The archived notice discussed application modernization, VMware Cloud on AWS, automation and desktop management. It referred to 2021-era examples such as 5V0-71.19, 2V0-71.21, 2V0-31.20 and 2V0-31.21, and to replacement schedules extending into February 2022. Those names and deadlines describe the old training ecosystem; they are not evidence of current candidate eligibility or product support.
The transferable distinction is between infrastructure responsibilities and application-delivery responsibilities. An operator responsible for vSphere resource allocation needs a different skill set from someone building Kubernetes application pipelines. When two programs share the word “cloud,” compare the exact objective statement and assessed tasks before assuming that one course prepares for both.
Current VMware certification should follow the product
The current VMware Cloud Foundation certification FAQ describes job-role-based certificates including administrator paths for VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware Cloud Foundation. VMware vSphere Foundation emphasizes managing a vSphere-based platform, while VMware Cloud Foundation introduces a broader private-cloud stack. Their purposes are not interchangeable, and the FAQ advises candidates to choose based on the role rather than treating a lower-level credential as an unavoidable prerequisite.
A candidate should record the actual infrastructure release, whether networking and storage components are managed within the broader private-cloud platform, and the permissions needed for daily operations. The relevant exam may change with new releases. Use official objectives and supported-course editions rather than a blog’s old list of exam codes to avoid costly misalignment.
A practice scenario for platform operations
Imagine an approved patch window for a two-host lab supporting one application. List cluster health, available capacity, virtual networking dependencies, storage accessibility and the backup or snapshot limits before making a change. If maintenance requires a workload migration, test the actual prerequisites and record what fails when one dependency is missing. “The VM powered on” is insufficient evidence that the user-facing service returned to normal.
After the change, compare the same health signals, verify application reachability and document a bounded recovery path. For Cloud Foundation deployments, consider which management components and identity boundaries add dependencies beyond the hypervisor. A training plan built around reproducible operations survives credential branding changes more effectively than a memorized product-version table.
Choose the credential without repeating old deadlines
Start with the job description: systems operator, cloud platform engineer, network/storage specialist, security administrator or solutions architect. Select the current VMware credential whose published blueprint actually covers those activities. Treat 2021 announcements as educational history and verify present registration, preparation resources, renewal rules and language choices directly with the owner of the examination.
Keep dated study notes so you know which objective edition a lab supports. Recheck around scheduled exam changes; do not assume that every item in a company’s historical product catalog remains generally available or that every change in platform branding requires restarting a learning plan from scratch.
