Subscription boundaries affect policy enforcement and cost ownership; network paths affect availability and application latency; storage choices affect recovery, privacy, and operating expense. A sound architecture makes those dependencies visible before deployment. For professionals preparing for Microsoft AZ-305, the useful skill is to turn an incomplete business request into a defensible design, explain the trade-offs, and show how the organization could operate and recover the resulting system. This article follows that decision process across governance, applications, data, identity, networking, continuity, and migration.

Microsoft’s English AZ-305 objectives were updated on April 17, 2026. The current outline groups skills into designing identity, governance, and monitoring; data storage; business continuity; and infrastructure solutions. Those are exam domains, not independent compartments in a production system. The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential also requires Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate; passing AZ-305 alone does not complete the credential. Architects should be able to explain both how the design meets its requirements and which teams are responsible for implementing and maintaining it.

Begin with business constraints and the system’s failure boundaries

Before drawing a network or choosing a database, ask what the service must accomplish, who uses it, and what failure or degradation is acceptable. A regional financial reporting system might prioritize integrity, auditability, and predictable scheduled workloads. An international customer portal may have much stricter interactive latency and uptime requirements. Both can use Azure, but the correct designs may differ sharply even when their cloud spending is similar.

Separate requirements into hard constraints and preferences. Hard constraints might include data residency, compatibility with a licensed component, an approved maximum recovery time, or an obligation to retain audit evidence. Preferences might include the smallest operational team, a familiar deployment tool, or minimizing cost. An architect should ask which constraint would invalidate an otherwise attractive option rather than presenting a single favorite service as universal.

Document assumptions that the business has not yet settled. For example, “high availability” does not specify whether a workload must survive a host failure, an availability-zone disruption, or a complete regional outage. “Encrypted data” does not specify who controls keys or how a lost key is recovered. Exposing such gaps before procurement is an architectural contribution, not a delay.

Build governance around ownership and enforcement, not resource labels

Management groups let an organization apply governance across subscriptions; subscriptions define meaningful administrative, billing, and quota boundaries; resource groups organize related resources for lifecycle management. These scopes are different tools. Creating a resource group for each department will not by itself establish effective financial ownership or prevent privileged access from crossing business-unit boundaries.

Design an operating model alongside the hierarchy. Decide who may create subscriptions, grant privileged roles, approve policy exceptions, select regions, and respond to cost anomalies. Azure Policy can restrict configurations or audit deviations, while Azure role-based access control grants operations to identities at defined scopes. Neither replaces a documented exception process or accountability for reviewing alerts. In Azure landing-zone governance, the hierarchy only succeeds when teams can deploy legitimate workloads without bypassing security and cost controls.

Tags are useful for chargeback, inventory, and automation when their values remain trustworthy. A practical tagging design defines mandatory fields, acceptable values, enforcement, and remediation when resources move between owners. Do not assume that a tag changes the actual security boundary. Test how policy inheritance works before applying restrictive assignments broadly, because a poorly scoped deny policy can interrupt recovery or block a needed service.

Choose compute by the workload’s operating model

A virtual machine is appropriate when an application requires operating-system control, custom agents, or compatibility that a managed platform cannot provide. Azure App Service can remove much of the web-hosting infrastructure burden, but application runtime constraints and network integrations still need checking. Azure Functions suits event-triggered or scheduled work when its execution characteristics and dependencies fit the workload. Azure Kubernetes Service supports container orchestration, but adds a control plane and operational practices that should be justified by deployment and workload needs.

Describe each option in terms of responsibility: who patches the host, manages capacity, deploys releases, rotates secrets, troubleshoots networking, and verifies recovery? A small team may benefit from a managed application platform even if raw virtual-machine pricing appears lower. A specialized batch workload may need Azure Batch or another job-oriented model rather than a permanently provisioned fleet. Evaluate cold-start tolerance, scaling limits, connection patterns, and operational visibility as part of the recommendation.

Compute and network design are inseparable. A web application with private database access requires name resolution, routing, and outbound access that fit the platform; a container service may need image registries, logging endpoints, and controlled secrets access. Model these paths before deployment. A design that runs only after temporarily disabling network restrictions has not passed an architecture review.

Match storage to data behavior before comparing price tiers

Relational transactions, document records, files, archives, and high-throughput event streams need different data contracts. Start with queries, consistency, access frequency, record growth, transaction boundaries, and expected recovery. Azure SQL Database can reduce database administration for compatible relational workloads; Azure SQL Managed Instance may better fit applications that depend on SQL Server instance features; SQL Server on Azure virtual machines offers more operating-system and engine control at greater maintenance cost.

For unstructured objects, Azure Blob Storage offers lifecycle and tiering choices. A colder tier may reduce storage charges but increase access or retrieval costs and delay availability. Azure Files can support shared-file workloads, but SMB access, identity integration, and network connectivity must be part of the design. A document database such as Azure Cosmos DB deserves assessment of partition keys, consistency, request patterns, and regional write behavior rather than being treated as a general replacement for relational storage. Its cloud-native data model is particularly relevant when application access patterns are known early.

Replicas, backups, and retention policies are not interchangeable controls. Replication can improve resilience against some infrastructure failures, but may propagate a logical deletion or bad update. Backup retention supports recovery from incidents that replicas alone cannot reverse. Select both according to the threats and business obligations they address, and prove that authorized operators can actually restore the information.

Design data integration and application communication deliberately

An integration design should distinguish a scheduled data pipeline from a stream of business events and from a request-response API. Azure Data Factory can orchestrate movement and transformation across sources; Azure Service Bus provides durable business messaging patterns; Event Grid can distribute notifications about changes; Event Hubs can handle event-ingestion scenarios. These are different delivery contracts, not synonyms for “real time.”

For each connection, identify the producer, consumer, failure behavior, retry policy, ordering needs, duplication risk, and ownership of the data. A queue can absorb a temporary downstream outage, but it does not automatically make consumers idempotent or ensure a transaction spans multiple services. An API gateway can centralize certain policy and observability functions, but it should not silently become the sole authorization decision for every backend operation.

Application state also influences scaling and recovery. Stateless application instances are easier to redistribute after a failure, whereas session state and long-running transactions require explicit persistence and consistency decisions. Caching can improve response time, but invalidation and the effect of stale data should be planned rather than deferred until after launch.

Separate identity, authorization, and the handling of secrets

Microsoft Entra ID authenticates users and workloads; Azure role-based access control controls many management- and data-plane operations; an application may additionally enforce business-specific authorization. An identity that successfully signs in should not thereby gain permission to read every dataset or invoke every sensitive API. For application-to-service access, managed identities can remove the need to embed reusable credentials in source code or deployment configuration.

Key Vault can store keys, certificates, and secrets, but safe access also requires an appropriate permission model, network design, rotation ownership, and a recovery plan. Conditional Access and privileged access controls address different parts of the threat model. For example, stronger sign-in verification reduces some account compromise risks, but it does not compensate for an application identity with broadly assigned permissions.

Hybrid identity adds dependencies on synchronization, federation, and directory availability. During an outage, determine which authentication paths still work, what can be recovered independently, and whether emergency access remains possible without bypassing accountability. Design for identity continuity alongside application continuity.

Give networks an explicit route, inspection, and DNS model

Virtual networks, subnets, private endpoints, routing, and network security groups are useful only as parts of a traceable flow. Draw the path between an external client, application tier, data tier, and on-premises dependency. Mark where traffic is authenticated, filtered, logged, and subject to address translation. A hub-and-spoke topology may simplify shared inspection and connectivity, but centralization can also create dependencies or bottlenecks that a smaller deployment does not need.

Site-to-site VPN and ExpressRoute solve different hybrid-connectivity needs; redundancy may require more than one circuit or tunnel and a tested failover path. Application Gateway, Azure Front Door, Load Balancer, and DNS-based routing operate at different layers and locations in the request path. Choose a service based on protocol, regional reach, application security, and failover behavior rather than its apparent position on an architecture diagram.

Name resolution is a frequent hidden dependency, especially with private endpoints and hybrid networks. In hybrid Azure DNS design, conditional forwarding and private-zone resolution must work from each relevant network, including during failover. A secure route to a database is of little use when workloads cannot resolve its private name.

Connect monitoring to decisions the operations team can make

Metrics, diagnostic logs, activity records, distributed traces, and security signals support different questions. A CPU metric may suggest capacity pressure; a failed request trace can reveal a dependency timeout; an activity log can show a configuration change. Decide what action each alert should cause, its severity, the team that owns the response, and the evidence required to close the incident.

Collecting every available event without retention, access, or cost controls creates noise. Conversely, retaining no relevant data makes incidents difficult to reconstruct. Monitoring needs privacy-aware access controls and a testable response process. An architecture proposal should include how teams will detect a regional service incident, confirm customer impact, and distinguish a platform fault from an application deployment error.

Design continuity from agreed recovery objectives

Recovery time objective (RTO) expresses how quickly a service must be restored; recovery point objective (RPO) expresses the tolerable amount of data loss in time. Map these targets to application dependencies and business processes before selecting availability zones, replicated databases, backups, or secondary regions. A database might meet its own RPO while the overall service fails its RTO because identity, DNS, queues, or a vendor integration are unavailable.

Availability architecture and recovery procedures serve different purposes. Zone redundancy can mitigate certain localized failures. Backups can recover deleted or corrupted data. A replication and orchestration process may help restore service elsewhere, but must be tested with realistic recovery sequencing. The distinction between Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery matters because an intact restore point is not proof that the business application can resume within its agreed outage window.

Conduct recovery exercises that verify identity access, data integrity, dependent services, expected performance, and safe failback. Record actual restoration times, not only advertised platform capabilities. Include how staff will communicate with users and who has authority to initiate a disruptive failover.

Plan migration as a change to the operating model

Migration starts with workload discovery, dependencies, data movement, compatibility, security requirements, and licensing. Rehosting a virtual machine may be appropriate for a constrained first step, while a managed-service migration may reduce future work but require application changes. Refactoring and rebuilding are different investments with different risks; the most modern architecture is not automatically the most responsible near-term choice.

Use discovery and dependency evidence to group workloads into migration waves. Establish a cutover window, data validation, rollback criteria, observability, and support ownership before changing production traffic. A structured Azure migration roadmap can align these steps with a landing zone that is actually ready for the workloads being moved. Once moved, review cost, security, performance, and backup posture against the original commitments rather than considering the migration complete when the VM boots.

Use a case study to connect every design domain

Consider a retailer moving its ordering system to Azure. The business requires customer orders to continue during a zone failure, cannot tolerate more than a short period of lost transactions, retains records for audit, and has a small operations team. The architect might first reject an all-VM approach if a managed web and database design meets compatibility needs with fewer patching obligations. That decision creates further questions about identity, transaction consistency, network isolation, and dependency retries.

Next, compare database and object-storage recovery methods against the different retention requirements. Establish the permitted routes between front end, APIs, messaging and data stores. Decide how a regional event would affect payment-provider calls and order reconciliation, and define how operators would measure actual user impact. In a cloud architecture case study, each selected service should be traceable to a requirement or an explicitly documented assumption.

That reasoning is what makes AZ-305 preparation transferable to production architecture. Learn the current service capabilities, but treat every diagram as a set of choices that must withstand cost, security, availability, and organizational scrutiny. A strong Azure design is not the one with the most services; it is the one whose constraints, owners, failure modes, and operating procedures are clear enough to be tested.

Designing an Azure environment for a real organization is not the same as selecting an Azure service for each requirement in isolation.
