They are not two active registration choices. Microsoft announced AZ-104 replacing AZ-103 in April 2020 and stated that AZ-103 would retire on August 31, 2020.

The Azure Administrator Associate credential continued; the assessment used to earn it changed. That distinction matters to someone returning to an unfinished course or reviewing notes from a colleague who qualified years ago.

Treat the exam code on a resource as a statement about when its curriculum was built, not as proof that every technical detail is wrong. A lesson on IP prefixes may remain helpful. A screenshot showing how a now-renamed identity service is configured may not.

A chapter claiming particular objective weights from the AZ-103 period should never determine today’s revision schedule. Historical material can be supporting explanation, but it cannot be the authority for the exam you will book.

The safest reference point is Microsoft’s current AZ-104 skills outline, which identifies skills measured as of April 17, 2026. Check that effective date when planning study, rather than relying on a course provider’s publication year. Microsoft updates role-based exams periodically; even material bearing the AZ-104 code needs to be checked against the latest published objectives before a candidate treats it as current.

Read the current outline without inventing a historical comparison

The current specification organizes administration into five assessed areas: identities and governance, 20–25%; storage, 15–20%; compute, 20–25%; virtual networking, 15–20%; and monitoring and maintenance, 10–15%.

Those percentages are ranges, not a promise of an exact question distribution. Together they describe responsibility for deploying and operating an environment, rather than a list of Azure product names to memorize.

A legitimate AZ-103-versus-AZ-104 comparison must distinguish what the source actually proves. Microsoft’s 2020 announcement confirms the replacement and retirement date; the 2026 outline confirms the current topics. Those two documents alone do not establish an exact objective-by-objective difference between every historical exam version. If an older course markets a claimed percentage change or a newly introduced service, verify that assertion against the dated skills documents rather than repeating a convenient comparison chart.

Read each objective as an observable administrative task. “Interpret access assignments” implies explaining the principal, role and scope that produce effective permissions. “Troubleshoot network connectivity” implies deciding which evidence will isolate a failing path. “Perform backup and restore operations” implies demonstrating recovery, not just locating the backup service in the portal. This interpretation gives an old technical lesson a fair test: does it prepare the learner to make the current decision, or does it merely supply familiar vocabulary?

The current Microsoft AZ-104 exam remains the primary exam context for this pathway. A historical comparison should direct readers toward that active assessment without pretending the retired exam has its own current scheduling route. An old completion certificate, a practice-question label, and the current Microsoft credential are three different things; verify each independently before making a career or registration decision.

Retain fundamentals, but translate the administrative model

Core networking concepts survive exam changes. An IP address still needs an appropriate route; a client still needs a usable DNS answer; an application still needs its listener and security rules to permit traffic. However, an example that ends when a virtual machine deploys successfully misses the current objective to diagnose connectivity. The useful modern extension is to observe the effective route, inspect security rules and test the name resolution seen by the actual client.

Identity demands similar translation. Older material frequently says Azure Active Directory; the current name is Microsoft Entra ID. That is more than a find-and-replace exercise when a lesson blurs directory administration with permissions to Azure resources. Entra directory roles, Azure RBAC assignments, managed identities and storage data access each answer a different authorization question. A person can have permission to manage the storage account as a resource without automatically possessing blob data access through a suitable data role.

In practice, draw the access chain before selecting a role: who or what is authenticating, which resource operation is required, which role allows it, and at what scope is that role assigned?

Parent permissions can flow into resource groups and their resources. The Azure RBAC scope distinction therefore matters more than a remembered role label: a broad subscription grant and a narrow single-resource grant can carry very different risk even when the role name is the same.

Modern governance also separates mechanisms that old lessons sometimes introduce together. Tags are classification metadata, not authorization rules. A budget warns according to its configuration, not a universal switch that shuts off spending. Azure Policy evaluates conditions and can enforce supported effects; resource locks restrict specified management actions even for highly privileged users. An AZ-103 exercise that says “secure the subscription” needs to be retaught as a specific problem with an appropriate control and a measurable result.

Decide what an old lesson is worth before repeating it

Instead of studying an entire retired course in sequence, make a small audit of its modules. For each topic, record the enduring concept, the matching current exam objective and the evidence required to trust its procedure.

Keep an explanation of subnetting if it is technically sound. Replace a portal walk-through if controls have moved or no longer behave that way. Set aside modules whose only value is rehearsing an expired exam interface or a stated 2020 question weighting.

Use three dispositions rather than a binary old-versus-new judgment. Keep a verified conceptual explanation and attach an updated hands-on exercise. Rebuild a procedure when the underlying problem still matters but the product, identity model or configuration behavior has changed. Retire material designed to answer an obsolete objective or a retired service question. The time spent sorting the material often saves more effort than restarting every learning resource from the beginning.

For example, a legacy storage lesson might correctly explain durability while offering a dated access setup. Preserve the durability reasoning, then revisit current redundancy, identity-based permissions, network restrictions and protection against deletion as separate decisions. A lesson that uses a shared access signature should prompt questions about scope, expiration and how the credential is issued, not simply whether the old screenshot can be copied step for step.

A compact audit record can carry four fields: legacy lesson, relevant current objective, replacement lab, and source/date used to verify it. If the source column is empty, leave the lesson unapproved for exam preparation. That gives a learner with 40 hours of inherited videos a practical route through them without treating familiarity as evidence of current correctness.

Make a network failure expose the gap in a legacy course

Consider a hypothetical internal application on an Azure VM that can reach a storage account through a public endpoint, but the security design now requires private connectivity. An old lab might stop when both resources exist. A current operational lab asks where the client resolves the storage hostname, whether a private endpoint has been approved and whether the client’s network can reach the resolved address. These are distinct questions; an NSG rule cannot repair an incorrect DNS answer.

Build the diagnosis in layers. Confirm the VM is running and that the application is using the hostname you expect. Check name resolution from that VM, not merely from your laptop. Review the effective routes and security rules on the relevant interface, then determine whether the destination uses a public or private service endpoint. Record the observation supporting each next step. The Azure VNet troubleshooting workflow is useful because it treats routing, DNS and filtering as separate hypotheses.

Now revise one variable at a time in a disposable lab. Change a private DNS link or a relevant permitted rule, repeat the same client-side test and show precisely which observation changed. If the symptom persists, your hypothesis was incomplete. This is stronger preparation than memorizing that private endpoints are “more secure” or assuming every inaccessible service is caused by a firewall. The exercise also teaches how to describe an incident to a network or security specialist.

A learner should not claim that this scenario reproduces a specific exam question. It is an educational simulation of administration skills named in the official outline. The objective is to practice causal reasoning and evidence, not to manufacture an unofficial prediction about the exam’s question bank.

Check storage, compute and recovery for misleading equivalences

Storage examples become more valuable when they force a choice between mechanisms with different failure coverage. Replication supports durability and availability objectives under its configured model; it does not, by itself, substitute for a separately testable backup or recovery strategy. Blob versioning, soft delete, access control and lifecycle management each address different risks. Learn what a configured feature can actually reverse before recommending it for accidental deletion or malicious modification.

For compute, distinguish deployment success from service availability. A virtual machine may exist while its guest operating system is unresponsive. An App Service can be healthy yet unable to reach a private dependency.

A scale set can add instances without fixing a shared database bottleneck. Current compute preparation should include logs, metrics, deployment settings, networking and a recovery test. The storage account decisions behind one workload are often just as important as the compute platform hosting it.

Monitoring and protection also require accurate boundaries. An Azure Monitor alert can notify responders when a defined condition occurs, but the alert alone does not restore damaged data.

Availability zones mitigate certain infrastructure failures, whereas Backup and Site Recovery address different recovery needs with their own prerequisites and trade-offs. Asking which specific event a mechanism handles is a better test than recalling two service names from a legacy flashcard.

An older resource can still explain an architecture principle here, provided its configuration is independently retested and current service documentation supports the claim. Avoid the opposite mistake of assuming that every service absent from an AZ-103 syllabus is automatically part of AZ-104. The official current objectives, not an imagined history, set the learning boundary.

Build a present-day preparation route from what you already know

Begin with a self-inventory rather than a new purchase. Can you show inherited RBAC access for a user, inspect why a policy blocks a deployment, protect an Azure Files share, revise a VM deployment, trace a subnet route and recover a workload from backup? Those tasks reveal both transferable experience and gaps. Someone experienced with traditional servers may need more Azure governance; a cloud developer may need more operational restoration and networking diagnosis.

Use the Microsoft AZ-104 study plan to schedule evidence-producing tasks instead of counting finished modules. For each weak domain, write one falsifiable lab objective, the observation that will prove it and a safe cleanup step. Study material from the AZ-103 period can support a retained concept, but the actual exercise and expected result should match the current platform and objectives.

Before scheduling, recheck Microsoft’s credential and exam pages for updated objectives, assessment policies, language options and renewal requirements. Do not carry forward the certification validity statements from an announcement written in 2020 as if they were current policy. The historical resource explains the succession; the present-day Microsoft pages govern today’s candidate decisions.

The sensible conclusion is neither “AZ-103 still counts” nor “everything from AZ-103 is useless.” The retired course is a reference library of uneven freshness. Keep explanations that survive verification, rebuild procedures that no longer demonstrate current control behavior, and anchor the complete preparation plan in the active AZ-104 skills. This produces a defensible study plan without requiring the learner to start from zero.

Continue learning

Related guides

AZ-104 Exam Guide: Skills, Labs, and PreparationMap current AZ-104 objectives to hands-on administrator labs.AZ-104 Study Plan by Exam DomainSequence AZ-104 labs around domain gaps and readiness evidence.Subscriptions, Azure Policy, and Resource LocksSee how subscriptions, Azure Policy, and locks constrain deployments.

Browse Topics

<details class="topic-group" open="">

CertificationsVendor and credential guides

View all Certifications →MicrosoftAmazonCompTIACiscoProject ManagementGoogleISC2FortinetISACADatabricksServiceNowAnthropicEC-CouncilPalo Alto NetworksLinux FoundationVMwareITILHPE / ArubaCheck PointHashiCorpACAMSThe Open GroupIAPPNVIDIANetApp

</details>
<details class="topic-group">

TechnologyAI, cloud, security and data

View all Technology →CybersecurityData &
