Project management is work, not a job title conferred by an examination. A construction manager who resolves a delayed permit, a technology lead who delivers a complicated migration and a nonprofit coordinator who manages funding and stakeholders can all demonstrate project-management competence through what they accomplish. PMP certification is different: it offers independently assessed evidence of relevant experience and judgment.<\/p>\n
That distinction matters when deciding whether to invest in certification. PMP is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI), and its value depends on the candidate’s experience, target employers, career stage and ability to apply what they learn. Rather than declaring uncertified people illegitimate, a useful question is where formal validation would make a meaningful difference to a professional’s next responsibility.<\/p>\n
Project managers are accountable for translating an outcome into coordinated work. They establish decision rights, negotiate scope and constraints, monitor threats to delivery, support the people doing the work and explain trade-offs to sponsors. PMI revised the PMP examination in July 2026. The current examination contains 180 questions and allows 240 minutes, with coverage distributed across People (33%), Process (41%) and Business Environment (26%). Candidates are expected to reason through predictive, adaptive and hybrid delivery situations, including decisions involving business value, stakeholder relationships, artificial intelligence and sustainability.
