A junior preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT in 2022 faced an assessment with a different delivery format from the one used today. The 2022 guide is valuable as a reminder that practice can build reading, quantitative reasoning and confidence, but its old test layout and calendar must not be copied into an October 2026 plan. The present PSAT/NMSQT is a digital, module-based assessment with Reading and Writing and Math, totaling 98 questions in 134 minutes. Its score can support academic planning and National Merit consideration when eligibility rules are met; neither outcome follows automatically from completing a prep book.

The PSAT/NMSQT reports a total score from 320 to 1520 and two section scores from 160 to 760. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation also uses a Selection Index based on a different formula: twice Reading and Writing plus Math, divided by ten. Because the verbal section receives double weighting in that index, the Selection Index cannot be inferred solely from the total.

National Merit consideration depends on entry requirements, competition year and qualifying performance. Recognition and scholarships involve additional stages. A 2022 threshold or a friend’s score does not establish eligibility for the current cycle.

Reading and Writing skills include information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas, and standard English conventions. Math skills include algebra, advanced math, problem-solving/data analysis, and geometry/trigonometry. Looking at domain patterns can reveal where an apparently strong total masks recurring mistakes.

For example, a student may understand literary passages but misinterpret charts embedded with text, or solve linear equations correctly but stumble on quadratic functions. Those differences justify different practice plans. A broad study schedule that does not adapt to actual errors can waste time.

Bluebook divides Reading and Writing into two 32-minute modules and Math into two 35-minute modules. Performance on a first module determines whether the next module is more or less difficult. Every problem still deserves a reasoned answer; students should not try to reverse-engineer difficulty from the appearance of a question.

Use an official timed practice test to learn navigation, flagging, the on-screen calculator and the clock. Complete an untimed preview separately to familiarize yourself with tools. Device practice is part of readiness, but the actual scored performance still rests on academic reasoning.

For inference questions, first identify the strongest directly supported conclusion. Avoid choosing an answer simply because it sounds plausible. For language items, identify the grammatical relationship that makes one option necessary. Write brief explanations for missed answers so the same misunderstanding can be recognized in a new context.
