An architecture succeeds when identity boundaries, data behavior, network dependencies, recovery objectives, cost, and operations work together under realistic conditions. Two solutions may meet the same functional request yet differ sharply in reliability, security, latency, and maintainability. For an Azure solutions architect, the difficult task is to establish the business constraints first, then justify each design choice against them. That is the kind of reasoning the Microsoft AZ-305 exam is intended to assess.

The Microsoft AZ-305 exam, Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions, contributes to the Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification. Microsoft’s English-language skills outline was updated on April 17, 2026, so candidates should study the current design objectives rather than rely on older outlines. AZ-305 is about translating business and technical requirements into solutions; it is not merely an administration exam or a guarantee of any particular career outcome.

Translate a workload request into testable architecture requirements

Start with what the workload must do, who depends on it, and what failure would cost. An order-processing platform, for example, may need a consistent record of transactions, authentication for staff and customers, connectivity to an external payment provider, and a useful experience during peak traffic. Those are functional needs. The associated constraints are just as important: acceptable latency, data residence, recovery time objective (RTO), recovery point objective (RPO), peak transaction volume, retention rules, operational staffing, and a sustainable budget.

Turn adjectives such as “highly available,” “secure,” and “scalable” into criteria that architects can test. Does availability mean tolerating one failed virtual machine, one availability zone, or an entire region? Must transactions remain strongly consistent across locations? Is an hour of read-only operation acceptable during recovery? Which requirements are legally binding and which represent business preferences? These answers determine the practical design space before products are chosen.

Record assumptions alongside each requirement. Expected traffic growth, available operations expertise, upstream provider limits, and the application’s tolerance for eventual consistency may change. A design decision record should explain alternatives, selected tradeoffs, and the evidence that would prompt reconsideration. The Azure Well-Architected Framework is useful here as a way to evaluate security, reliability, cost optimization, operational excellence, and performance efficiency together rather than treating any pillar as free.

Connect identity, governance, and monitoring instead of treating them as separate checklists

Identity design begins with who or what needs access. Microsoft Entra ID supplies identity capabilities, but the architecture still must distinguish authentication from authorization. Azure role-based access control (RBAC) governs rights to Azure resources, while an application may need its own fine-grained permissions for business data. A managed identity can help a workload authenticate to supported Azure services without embedding long-lived application secrets. Administrative privileges should be scoped to the responsibilities and duration actually required.

The subscription and management-group structure influences how teams delegate ownership, apply policies, separate environments, track cost, and respond to incidents. Resource groups organize related resources, but they are not a substitute for a deliberate subscription boundary. Azure governance becomes concrete when architects can explain which rules are enforced centrally, which are delegated to application teams, and which exceptions require approval. Azure Policy can assess or enforce configuration requirements, while infrastructure-as-code practices help make approved configurations repeatable.

Older training materials sometimes list Azure Active Directory and Azure Blueprints as though their old product labels and workflows are still the baseline. Candidates should recognize the Microsoft Entra ID name and treat Azure Blueprints as a service in phased retirement, not a default choice for a new governance architecture. When assessing any tooling recommendation, verify its current support lifecycle and migration path rather than relying on an old exam-preparation list.

Monitoring should be designed from the workload’s failure modes. Azure Monitor, Log Analytics workspaces, application telemetry, and diagnostic settings have different jobs. Specify which signals prove service health, which logs support incident investigation, which alerts require action, and how long evidence must be retained. Security logs and application performance metrics may have different owners and access controls. A large collection of dashboards is not a substitute for meaningful service-level indicators and tested response procedures.

Select data services by consistency, query, retention, and recovery needs

The data design should begin with access patterns and business invariants. Relational transactions and complex joins may point toward Azure SQL Database or another relational offering; globally distributed document workloads may have different reasons to consider Azure Cosmos DB; unstructured files and archives have different durability, access, and lifecycle requirements in Azure Storage. The important distinction is not which product sounds more scalable but whether its consistency model, indexing, throughput, security controls, and operational tradeoffs fit the workload.

For each data store, specify data ownership, encryption and key management, network exposure, authentication, backup behavior, retention, residency constraints, and the recovery sequence. Read replicas can help some workloads but do not automatically satisfy data-loss limits. Multi-region replication introduces questions about write authority and conflict handling. A storage lifecycle rule that reduces cost may also increase retrieval latency or limit immediate availability, which should be evaluated against actual recovery objectives.

Data integration creates its own architecture. A nightly batch transfer, an event stream, and a synchronous API call have different failure patterns, observability needs, and consistency expectations. Define whether downstream systems can tolerate duplicate messages, out-of-order events, or delayed updates. Idempotent processing and reliable retry behavior can be more important than a claim that every component is “real time.”

Design business continuity around specific failure scenarios

High availability and disaster recovery solve related but different problems. Availability-zone placement can protect against some localized failures, but it does not replace backups. Cross-region replicas can reduce outage exposure, but shared secrets, faulty deployments, corrupted data, or dependencies on the same identity service can create common failure paths. A business requirement for resilience must name the scenario being addressed and the evidence that would demonstrate acceptable recovery.

An RTO limits the targeted period before the service resumes; an RPO limits the targeted age of recoverable data. A low RTO may justify warm capacity, automated failover, or carefully tested runbooks, while a low RPO may require frequent or continuous data protection. The two objectives should be established by the business process and tested as a combined service, not inferred from a product’s advertised features. Sound Azure business continuity design includes validating authentication, dependent APIs, and transaction integrity after restoration.

Consider a database that is restored successfully while its application gateway, private DNS records, or third-party payment endpoint remains unavailable. Infrastructure may show green indicators, yet the customer cannot complete an order. Restoration tests should therefore follow a representative end-to-end business transaction, record real elapsed time and data correctness, and verify both technical and organizational decision paths. When the objective cannot be met, the gap should be recorded and explicitly accepted or remediated by the right owner.

Choose infrastructure and application patterns for workload behavior

Virtual machines can be appropriate for operating-system control or application compatibility, but they leave teams responsible for more platform operations. Containers may improve packaging and deployment consistency without removing the need to design networking, secrets, scaling, and observability. Azure Kubernetes Service is not automatically preferable to Azure Container Apps or a managed application platform; the choice depends on orchestration needs, network constraints, operational expertise, and integration requirements. Serverless options can simplify event-driven workloads when execution limits and latency behavior fit the task.

Architecture also includes how components communicate. A synchronous API can be straightforward but may amplify failures when several services must all respond promptly. A queue or event-driven path can decouple processing and smooth bursts, provided the design handles retries, ordering, duplicate messages, and monitoring. Consider caching only after defining consistency expectations and invalidation behavior. The most economical design may combine patterns rather than force an entire application into one service model.

Deployments need clear promotion boundaries, repeatable configuration, safe secrets handling, and rollback or forward-fix plans. Architecture reviews should ask what happens during a failed release, a dependency outage, or a sudden rise in demand—not merely whether the infrastructure template deployed once. These operational scenarios often reveal where a proposed managed service or deployment pattern is appropriate.

Make network and hybrid boundaries explicit

Network design follows data flows and trust boundaries. An architect should identify how users reach an application, how services communicate privately, where traffic is inspected or filtered, which connections depend on the public internet, and what routes exist to on-premises environments. Azure virtual networks, subnets, private endpoints, network security groups, firewalls, and load-balancing or routing services have distinct roles; applying all of them indiscriminately can make the solution harder to operate without making it safer.

Hybrid connectivity may use a site-to-site VPN, ExpressRoute, or a combination, but connectivity alone does not resolve name resolution, identity, routing overlap, inspection, or failure handling. DNS design for hybrid Azure networks is particularly important when workloads use private endpoints or depend on services reachable through both cloud and on-premises paths. A successful connectivity test should use the names and application protocols that users actually depend on, not only a single reachable IP address.

Security and performance requirements may conflict. Forcing all traffic through a centralized inspection point can improve consistent enforcement while adding latency, cost, and a shared dependency. A private connection can reduce exposure while complicating DNS and troubleshooting. Document the intended route, normal failure behavior, and who owns each control before choosing the topology.

Prepare for the current AZ-305 skills map with design comparisons

As of the April 17, 2026 English-language outline, Microsoft groups AZ-305 objectives into four areas. The approximate exam weights are useful for planning broad coverage, not for assuming an exact question count or skipping low-frequency design concepts:

Identity, governance, and monitoring — 25–30%: authentication, authorization, governance structure, compliance, monitoring, and secrets and key-management recommendations.

Data storage — 20–25%: relational and nonrelational design, durability, protection, cost, scalability, and data integration.

Business continuity — 15–20%: backup, restoration, high availability, and recovery designs that satisfy business objectives.

Infrastructure — 30–35%: compute, application integration, networking, deployment, and migration design.

Study each area by comparing two or three defensible solutions to the same scenario. Instead of memorizing that a service supports automatic scaling, ask which metric drives the scaling decision, which dependencies constrain it, and how the architecture avoids excessive cost. Instead of simply naming a backup tool, ask what data must be protected, how recovery is validated, and whether the business tolerates the resulting downtime.

Use Microsoft’s current objectives and Learn material to identify gaps, then reinforce design judgment through hands-on experiments or architecture diagrams. A small test that breaks DNS for a private endpoint, triggers an alert, or exercises a data restore can reveal more than a long list of service definitions. Such work helps explain why one option satisfies a requirement while another fails an important constraint.

Evaluate a complete scenario before selecting a service

Imagine an organization moving an internal order platform into Azure while retaining an on-premises system of record. The architecture must support customer logins, secure access to the legacy database, regional data requirements, a limited operating budget, and a measured recovery window. A strong design begins with a dependency map, workload profile, acceptable failure scenarios, and business owners—not with a preferred virtual machine size or a standard template.

Identity and network decisions determine how the cloud application reaches the existing system. Data integration decisions determine consistency and what happens if the private connection fails. Governance determines who can alter production resources. Monitoring establishes how the team detects a broken integration. The recovery design must cover the cloud platform and the on-premises dependency together. Performance testing then verifies the entire transaction path under peak demand, while cost analysis tests whether the design remains viable at expected and stressed volumes.

A good AZ-305 answer can defend these decisions and identify their limits. The strongest architecture is not necessarily the one with the most services, the lowest theoretical cost, or the highest advertised availability. It is the one whose tradeoffs are understood, whose controls match the actual requirements, and whose assumptions can be tested before users depend on it.

Designing a production workload in Microsoft Azure is not a contest to name the largest number of cloud services.
