That creates a specific planning risk: a candidate can study the correct exam number while using objectives intended for the wrong test date. Cisco says the current v1.1 exam is available through February 2, 2027, and the v2.0 exam begins February 3, 2027. Candidates do not need to discard the networking skills they have already learned. They do need to identify which scope and task verbs will govern their actual sitting and use lab evidence to cover the differences.
<details class="article-toc" open>
On this page

First choose the exam date, not the most recent course title

Compare the official domain weights accurately

Network infrastructure becomes more diagnosis-oriented

Switching, routing and resiliency receive clearer practical scope

Network services and security are more operationally specific

AI and operations change the management conversation

Decide what to keep, add and discard from an existing study plan

Verify the source again before committing to an appointment

</details>

First choose the exam date, not the most recent course title

The official CCNA exam is currently 200-301 v1.1. Cisco’s public transition schedule places the last v1.1 testing date on February 2, 2027, with v2.0 available from February 3, 2027. These are release and scheduling statements from Cisco, not dates inferred from a third-party course catalog. If the exam appointment is before the cutover, the candidate should prepare against the active v1.1 objectives. If it is after, the released v2.0 blueprint is the appropriate framework for study.

An exam appointment can be rescheduled or interrupted, so build some buffer around the deadline rather than assume a last-day appointment can always be changed without consequence. Candidates should check actual testing center availability and Cisco’s live instructions as the transition approaches. The publication of an upcoming blueprint is not proof that the new exam is already available for testing in October 2026. Conversely, a 2025 guide that says ‘the CCNA exam is 200-301’ may be technically true while omitting a critical version distinction.

Certification itself remains CCNA. The new exam replaces the blueprint of the same code rather than creating a wholly unrelated credential with a different pathway. Cisco states that candidates should not stop preparing for the current version simply because a refreshed version is announced. The sensible choice depends on preparation readiness, appointment timing and whether additional v2.0 practical tasks need to be learned.

Compare the official domain weights accurately

CCNA v1.1 has six major domains: Network Fundamentals 20%, Network Access 20%, IP Connectivity 25%, IP Services 10%, Security Fundamentals 15%, and Automation and Programmability 10%. This distribution gives separate top-level attention to routing, services and security even though the subjects interact during actual troubleshooting.

The announced CCNA v2.0 blueprint has five domains: Network Infrastructure and Connectivity 25%, Switching and Network Access 25%, IP Routing 20%, Network Services and Security 20%, and AI and Network Operations and Management 10%. The percentages sum to 100% in each version, but domain names alone do not show precisely which tasks have changed. One version’s 10% security category does not map directly to one component of another’s 20% combined network services/security category.

A candidate should resist comparing domain weights as though individual technology importance were simply added or removed. The current six-category scheme distributes relevant skills differently from the future five-category structure. To understand the refresh, read objective-level verbs and examples. For instance, v2.0 often uses ‘troubleshoot,’ ‘configure’ or ‘interpret’ for tasks that v1.1 describes with less explicit operational depth. That implies greater value in an exercise that proves actual packet behavior.

Network infrastructure becomes more diagnosis-oriented

Cisco’s v1.1 Network Fundamentals domain includes network components, physical media, interface conditions, IP addressing, wireless principles, virtualization and basic switching concepts. Its future Network Infrastructure and Connectivity domain specifies diagnosing physical media issues including signal levels and pinouts, troubleshooting IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and prefix assignment, radio-frequency conditions, wired/wireless client connectivity, and DHCPv4 behavior across client, server and relay.

These are not alien technologies. A candidate who already understands cable faults, subnetting, IPv6 and DHCP has much of the foundation. The difference is the type of demonstration expected. ‘Describe DHCP’ is not equivalent to diagnosing why a client sends Discover but receives no Offer through a configured relay. A student preparing for v2.0 should practice comparing client, gateway and server evidence, including how a wrong VLAN can prevent address assignment.

The same principle applies to IPv6. Recognizing
fe80::/10
or the
/64
convention is useful, but the newer blueprint expects troubleshooting address configuration and prefix sizing. A lab that introduces an incorrect prefix or missing router advertisement will teach more than a flashcard identifying the address type. Keep addressing and routing concepts grounded in packets rather than in printed notation alone.

Switching, routing and resiliency receive clearer practical scope

The announced Switching and Network Access domain includes configuring 802.1Q trunks, Layer 2/Layer 3 LACP port-channels, SVIs, endpoint port attributes, network discovery and Rapid PVST+ guards. The v1.1 blueprint covers many of these concepts too, but v2.0 places greater explicit weight on configuration and troubleshooting. Practice should involve two switches with several VLANs and an expected loop-free topology, not only the command syntax to create VLAN 10.

IP Routing remains central. V1.1 includes longest prefix match, administrative distance, static routes, single-area OSPFv2 and first-hop redundancy concepts. V2.0 specifies troubleshooting IPv4 and IPv6 static routing, configuring single-area OSPFv2 and OSPFv3, and interpreting HSRP and VRRP operational status. OSPFv3 is a notable explicit extension because it introduces IPv6 routing relationships alongside familiar OSPFv2 concepts.

A single three-router lab can address much of this scope if it has both IPv4 and IPv6, distinct route alternatives, an intentionally broken neighbor relationship and a verified return path. The exercise should show the candidate how to identify a problem from observed routing and neighbor output. Adding more routers without meaningful fault tests produces complexity but not necessarily better preparation.

Network services and security are more operationally specific

V1.1 separates IP Services and Security Fundamentals. The announced v2.0 combines related operational work into Network Services and Security and names technologies such as TACACS+, RADIUS, SFTP/SCP, NAT/PAT on IOS XE, DNS record diagnosis, IPv4 ACL types, DHCP snooping, ARP inspection, storm control, RA guard and port security. Not all are new concepts, but many have more specific configuration or troubleshooting verbs in the released objectives.

Candidates should not treat this as a reason to collect a command list. A meaningful management lab asks whether a user authenticated, received the correct authorization and left an accounting record. A NAT lab asks whether the expected translation was created and whether the return flow succeeds. A DNS lab distinguishes an incorrect CNAME from a correct address record followed by an application timeout. Those demonstrations teach the boundaries between network control planes, services and security policies.

Use controlled faults that can be reversed. If an ACL denies the intended application flow, record which sequence matched and why. If a DHCP snooping rule blocks the legitimate server, restore the correct trusted topology rather than disabling protection. Examinations reward knowing the task, while employers need an engineer who can recover service without weakening the network.

AI and operations change the management conversation

V1.1 already includes automation concepts, REST, JSON, configuration tools, controller-based networks and AI/ML terminology. V2.0 explicitly covers agentic AI, selecting useful prompts for network operations based on data classification, output format, persona and instructions, management models, SNMP, Ansible command execution and syslog interpretation. These topics do not imply that certification candidates must deploy an unsupervised AI system on production routers.

A good preparation exercise can ask a read-only assistant to analyze synthetic routing evidence, state its uncertainty and propose verification commands. The candidate should check every assertion against known lab state and understand which instructions or tool outputs cannot be trusted. An automated change should remain subject to permissions and approved change control. The practical theme is accountable operations: collecting useful telemetry, requesting the right analysis, and recognizing where model suggestions need evidence or human approval.

SNMP and syslog concepts fit the same theme. A counter graph or log message is evidence to interpret, not a substitute for packet-path validation. Ansible can execute repeatable commands on supported devices, but a successful tool response is not proof that the network application works. Build a study artifact that contains the intended state, collected evidence and verified outcome for each exercise.

Decide what to keep, add and discard from an existing study plan

Keep strong fundamentals: IPv4 subnetting, IPv6 types and prefixes, Ethernet switching, routing-table interpretation, OSPFv2, static routes, wireless security, ACLs and management basics still matter. Add planned v2.0-specific diagnostic tasks where the blueprint is more explicit, particularly OSPFv3, DHCP server/relay troubleshooting, DNS record types, LACP/Rapid PVST+ operations, management AAA and secure file transfers, and constrained AI-assisted operations.

Discard assumptions, not learning. A course recorded for v1.0 might teach useful networking but may not cover the current v1.1 AI and cloud topics or the planned v2.0 tasks. Old posts about retired CCNA Routing and Switching or CCENT should be framed historically, not presented as current certification options. A learning platform’s content date is a clue to audit coverage, not a guarantee that everything in it is obsolete.

Make a compact objective matrix with one row per actual Cisco subtopic and columns for ‘explained,’ ‘configured,’ ‘troubleshot,’ and ‘evidence saved’ where those activities apply. Mark whether the row belongs to v1.1, v2.0 or both. Do not invent a fixed minimum number of study hours: a candidate with workplace switching experience and one with only theoretical knowledge need different lab emphasis. The matrix’s value is identifying what cannot yet be demonstrated.

Verify the source again before committing to an appointment

Cisco can clarify objectives or administrative details before an exam goes live. Recheck the public exam and certification pages near scheduling rather than assuming a screenshot from months earlier remains definitive. This is especially important during a published transition with the same numerical code. A date-specific decision should be recorded with the official version of the blueprint consulted and the candidate’s planned test date.

The CCNA certification path and 200-301 exam are the appropriate existing PrepAway destinations. For authoritative objectives, read Cisco’s v1.1 PDF and v2.0 PDF, and its transition announcement. Those sources establish the dates and exam duties; outside study resources help explain them but should not redefine them.

The most efficient preparation decision is the one that matches an actual exam appointment to an honest skills inventory. Take v1.1 while it is available if that suits readiness, or build additional v2.0 lab competence for later testing. In either case, learning to verify a packet’s path is more durable than memorizing which bullet currently holds an objective.

Related Guides

CCNA certification

IPv4 subnetting

Browse Topics

<details class="topic-group" open>

CertificationsVendor and credential guides

View all Certifications →MicrosoftAmazonCompTIACiscoProject ManagementGoogleISC2FortinetISACADatabricksServiceNowAnthropicEC-CouncilPalo Alto NetworksLinux FoundationVMwareITILHPE / ArubaCheck PointHashiCorpACAMSThe Open GroupIAPPNVIDIANetApp

</details>
<details class="topic-group">

TechnologyAI, cloud, security and data

View all Technology →CybersecurityData &
