Claude in Microsoft Foundry gives Azure-centered organizations a way to use Anthropic models inside Microsoft’s model and agent platform. Microsoft made Claude generally available in Foundry in June 2026, and current Foundry documentation distinguishes two hosting options: Claude models hosted on Azure end to end and Claude models hosted on Anthropic infrastructure. The lifecycle, feature set, data processing, Region options, and operational responsibilities can differ between those versions.<\/p>\n

The Azure-hosted path is important because teams can combine Claude with Microsoft Entra ID authentication, Azure role-based access control, Azure Marketplace billing, Foundry deployment and usage controls, and Foundry Agent Service. Microsoft has also continued to add Claude-specific capabilities such as structured outputs, web search, web fetch, MCP connector, and tool search on supported hosted-on-Azure models.<\/p>\n

Understand the two Foundry hosting versions<\/h3>\n

Microsoft currently documents Version 1 as hosted on Anthropic infrastructure and Version 2 as hosted on Azure.<\/p>\n

The options are not identical for every Claude model, and a model can have a different lifecycle stage depending on the hosting version.<\/p>\n

Claude platform choice<\/a> should therefore verify the exact model and version rather than simply selecting \u201cClaude in Foundry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Use Entra ID where Azure identity is the standard<\/h3>\n

Foundry can authenticate Claude requests with Microsoft Entra ID or API keys on supported deployment paths.<\/p>\n

Entra ID lets organizations use managed identities, Azure RBAC, service principals, Conditional Access for human access, and existing Azure identity governance around the deployment.<\/p>\n

Microsoft Foundry<\/a> is most valuable when AI access fits the same identity control plane as the rest of the Azure estate.<\/p>\n

Use Azure-hosted models for Azure-native placement<\/h3>\n

Microsoft describes hosted-on-Azure Claude as running on Azure infrastructure end to end.<\/p>\n

This can matter for organizations that require Azure-native hosting, network alignment, regional data zones, or procurement through Azure.<\/p>\n

Data and privacy review should still recognize Anthropic’s role and the terms that apply to the Marketplace model offering.<\/p>\n

Check data zones and lifecycle<\/h3>\n

Current Foundry announcements describe Global and US data-zone options for hosted-on-Azure Claude, while model pages provide per-model deployment and Region details.<\/p>\n

Model retirement schedules are also published by Microsoft for partner models.<\/p>\n

The production deployment should record model, hosting version, data zone, lifecycle status, and replacement plan.<\/p>\n

Use the Messages API surface<\/h3>\n

Claude in Foundry supports the Claude Messages API for current deployments.<\/p>\n

This can reduce code differences for teams already using Anthropic-style Messages while still using Azure authentication, billing, and model deployment.<\/p>\n

Do not assume every first-party Anthropic endpoint or management feature is available through Foundry simply because the message format is familiar.<\/p>\n

Use Foundry Agent Service where it fits<\/h3>\n

Claude can act as the reasoning model inside Foundry Agent Service for multi-step agents.<\/p>\n

Foundry agent tools<\/a> should combine model reasoning with Azure-managed identity, approved connections, tool policies, and observability.<\/p>\n

The same rule applies as on any platform: tool authorization belongs in the execution system, not in the model prompt.<\/p>\n

Track feature parity deliberately<\/h3>\n

Microsoft added structured outputs, web search, web fetch, MCP connector, and tool search to supported Claude models after the initial GA launch.<\/p>\n

Feature parity can continue to change by model and hosting type.<\/p>\n

Keep a compatibility matrix for the capabilities the application actually needs, especially if portability back to direct Anthropic or another cloud is a requirement.<\/p>\n

Use Azure governance as an advantage<\/h3>\n

Azure subscriptions, resource groups, RBAC, policy, cost management, network architecture, and monitoring can give central platform teams a familiar governance surface.<\/p>\n

Azure governance<\/a> should connect model deployment to ownership, cost, policy, and access instead of letting every product team create independent AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Centralization should still leave application teams responsible for business authorization and data eligibility.<\/p>\n

Decide from operating requirements<\/h3>\n

Foundry is strongest when the enterprise already runs Azure as a governed platform and values Microsoft-native procurement, identity, networking, and AI agent integration.<\/p>\n

For teams working around CCA-F<\/a>, the durable comparison is model capability plus hosting version, Region\/data zone, identity, feature parity, lifecycle, compliance, and operations. Claude in Foundry is not merely another endpoint; it is an Azure operating model for Anthropic models.<\/p>\n

Observability should connect Foundry deployment metadata with application traces. Record the model deployment, hosting version, region or data zone, Entra principal, request latency, token use, and agent\/tool activity so operators can distinguish application failure from model or platform configuration.<\/p>\n

Organizations should also test migration between hosting versions if that flexibility matters. Authentication, endpoint, quota, feature support, and data-processing assumptions can differ. A portable application can share prompts and evaluation sets while keeping a provider adapter for the platform-specific control plane.<\/p>\n

Preview capabilities should remain clearly labeled. Microsoft explicitly notes that preview items do not have the same production guarantees as GA features. A regulated or mission-critical workload should not quietly depend on a preview feature merely because it appeared in the same model documentation.<\/p>\n

Finally, Foundry deployment should have one owner for the Azure resource and one owner for application behavior. Central platform teams can manage subscription, network, and model access; product teams still own prompts, tools, evaluation, and business outcome. Clear separation keeps platform governance from becoming product ambiguity.<\/p>

Foundry deployment should also account for quota and capacity. Microsoft publishes model-specific quotas and rate limits, and the available capacity can differ by deployment type and region. A workload that performs well in a low-volume pilot should be load-tested against the actual hosted version and data zone the enterprise plans to use, especially when many applications share the same Azure subscription or model allocation.<\/p>\n

Billing through Azure Marketplace can simplify procurement and commitment use, but cost attribution still needs application metadata. A central subscription can hide which business unit or agent generated the consumption. Use resource grouping, deployment naming, tags where applicable, and application-level telemetry so finance and platform teams can connect Claude consumption to products and outcomes.<\/p>\n

Network architecture should be tested against the chosen hosting version. Azure-hosted models may fit existing Azure network and policy patterns differently from Anthropic-hosted offerings. The application should document whether traffic stays within Azure-hosted infrastructure, which endpoints are used, and how private or controlled network access is implemented for the complete request path.<\/p>\n

Foundry Agent Service introduces its own orchestration and lifecycle concerns. A Claude model can reason inside an agent that also uses tools, memory, knowledge, and Azure connections. Security review should therefore include the agent service configuration, identities, connection permissions, and publication path\u2014not only the model deployment.<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s fast feature rollout means compatibility should be tested at the exact deployment version. Structured outputs or MCP support available on one hosted-on-Azure model may not exist on an older Anthropic-hosted version. Release pipelines should query or document supported capability before enabling a feature globally.<\/p>\n

Operational support should define whether a problem belongs to Microsoft, Anthropic, or the application team. Authentication and subscription errors may sit in Azure; model behavior may require Anthropic guidance; malformed tool schemas remain the product team’s responsibility. Shared runbooks can reduce time lost bouncing between providers.<\/p>\n

For organizations standardizing on Azure, Claude in Foundry can reduce the organizational cost of introducing Anthropic models because procurement, identity, billing, and agent tooling are already familiar. The tradeoff is another layer between the application and Anthropic’s first-party platform. The architecture should choose that tradeoff consciously and keep evaluation portable enough to move if requirements change.<\/p>\n

Organizations should also review whether their Azure commitments and support model materially simplify the deployment. Foundry can centralize marketplace purchase and Azure billing, which may reduce procurement friction compared with a separate vendor relationship. That commercial simplicity can be significant at enterprise scale even when model quality is identical.<\/p>\n

Migration testing should include endpoint, authentication, streaming, structured-output, tool, and error behavior. A workload that moves from direct Anthropic to Foundry\u2014or between Foundry hosting versions\u2014may preserve the same Messages-style concepts while still changing platform semantics. Keep a provider-adapter test suite so these differences are discovered before production.<\/p>\n

Foundry is therefore most valuable when Claude becomes one component of an Azure-native AI platform rather than an isolated external API. The enterprise gains consistency in identity, procurement, model governance, and agent infrastructure while accepting that feature timing and operational responsibility now span Microsoft and Anthropic.<\/p>\n

Security review should include marketplace and role permissions required to deploy Claude. The people allowed to subscribe to model offerings, create deployments, assign RBAC, and invoke the model may need different Azure roles. Separation of deployment administration from application invocation reduces the chance that a compromised runtime can alter its own model or governance settings.<\/p>\n

Foundry model lifecycle should be part of normal release planning. Microsoft publishes retirement dates and replacements for partner models. Keep a calendar and evaluation runway so a required migration can be tested with prompts, tools, structured outputs, and agent workflows before the production deadline.<\/p>\n

When Claude is used through Foundry Agent Service, evaluate the complete agent rather than the model endpoint alone. Grounding, tool routing, memory, identity, and publication to Microsoft 365 surfaces can change business behavior.
