Anthropic’s current platform supports user-defined client tools, Anthropic-schema client tools, server-executed tools, strict tool schemas, tool search for large catalogs, parallel tool calls, and Agent SDK permission controls. The engineering challenge is choosing the right execution boundary and keeping model intent separate from application authority.

For ordinary user-defined tools, Claude emits a structured
tool_use
request, the application executes the operation, and a
tool_result
is returned in the next turn. Claude does not execute the business function itself. This loop gives the host application an opportunity to validate, authorize, log, and reject every external effect.

Tool architecture belongs inside Claude Production Engineering.

Use client tools for business logic

Internal APIs, databases, workflows, proprietary search, and business transactions usually belong in client-executed tools.

The application owns credentials and execution while Claude sees only the schema and returned result.

Tool control should make the interface narrow enough that the model cannot express arbitrary infrastructure operations through one generic function.

Use server tools for platform capabilities

Anthropic can execute supported server tools such as web search, web fetch, and code execution inside its platform loop.

This simplifies integration when the capability is generic and the application’s policy permits the platform-managed tool.

Server tools still need product-level decisions about when the capability is appropriate, what domains are allowed, and how returned evidence is used.

Use strict schemas where type errors matter

Set
strict: true
on supported tool definitions to guarantee schema-valid tool arguments.

Structured tool inputs reduce runtime failures caused by missing fields or incompatible types.

Strictness does not authorize the action; server-side code must still verify user rights, ranges, and target state.

Design tool descriptions around when to use them

Ambiguous descriptions cause wrong-tool selection even when schemas are valid.

Describe the business purpose, when the tool should be chosen, and how it differs from nearby tools.

A small number of clearly separated tools usually produces more reliable orchestration than many overlapping low-level functions.

Use tool search for large catalogs

Anthropic’s current tool-search feature can defer up to very large tool libraries and load relevant definitions on demand.

The documentation recommends considering tool search when there are ten or more tools, more than roughly ten thousand tokens of definitions, or declining selection accuracy.

Claude latency and context quality can improve when a huge MCP catalog does not enter the initial prompt.

Use parallel calls only for independent work

Claude can request multiple tools in one turn when the work is independent.

Parallel search or lookup can reduce wall-clock time, while dependent transactions should remain sequential.

Claude workflows should define how parallel results are merged and what happens when one branch fails.

Put approval around consequential tools

Read-only lookup and irreversible external action need different control paths.

Human approval can pause a high-impact tool request after Claude has assembled the exact parameters but before the executor acts.

Approval should be combined with scoped credentials and fresh-state validation so one click does not grant broad standing authority.

Return concise structured results

Tool results become new model context. Return the fields Claude needs plus clear status and stable error codes rather than dumping entire database records, HTML pages, or stack traces.

This reduces token cost, context rot, and indirect prompt-injection surface.

Claude guardrails should treat external tool output as untrusted content even when the API itself is trusted.

Trace the complete tool loop

Record session, tool name, validated parameters after safe redaction, authorization result, execution latency, result status, and business effect.

Agent observability should make it possible to explain which tool caused an outcome and which release selected it.

For production agents, reliable tool use is a contract: model selects → application validates → authorized executor acts → result returns → outcome is audited.

Tool choice should remain compatible with the model and API mode in use. Current Claude generations and platform surfaces can differ in supported
tool_choice
behaviors, so avoid hard-coding an assumption that every model accepts every forced-choice mode. Auto selection plus strong descriptions and strict schemas is a robust baseline.

Applications should handle tool-loop stop reasons explicitly. A client tool requires a matching
tool_result
on the next turn; server tools can pause or complete inside the platform loop depending on the feature. Missing or misordered results can cause request errors that look like model failures but are actually protocol bugs.

Idempotency matters for retries. If a tool call succeeds but the network fails before the result returns to Claude, retrying the same action can duplicate a payment, message, or record. Use operation IDs or transaction semantics so the executor can recognize a repeated request safely.

Tool permissions should evolve with the agent. When a tool gains a new operation or broader backend role, the threat model, approval policy, and evaluation suite should change in the same release. Tool authority is part of agent capability, even when the prompt and model stay unchanged.

For very large ecosystems, namespace tools consistently and keep commonly used tools loaded while deferring the rest. Search quality depends on names and descriptions because the tool-search service indexes these fields. Good catalog design is therefore part of agent reliability.

The mature pattern minimizes tool authority rather than maximizing the number of tools. Claude should see the capabilities necessary for the current workflow, and each capability should expose the narrowest operation the business actually needs. Fewer clearer tools create better selection, smaller context, easier evaluation, and smaller blast radius.

Tool granularity should match business decisions. A generic “run SQL” or “call any URL” tool is convenient during prototyping but difficult to secure. Prefer operations such as
lookup_order
,
create_ticket
, or
schedule_demo
whose parameters and consequences are bounded. The agent becomes easier to evaluate because each capability has a clear success condition.

Tool descriptions are part of the agent’s routing logic and should be versioned like prompts. If the description changes from “look up customer account” to “modify customer account,” the agent’s capability changed even if the backend endpoint is the same. Review and evaluate description changes that affect when Claude decides to call a tool.

Tool results should distinguish retryable technical failure from business denial. Return structured statuses such as unavailable, not_found, not_authorized, conflict, or success instead of a generic exception string. Claude can then explain the outcome or choose the correct next step without hallucinating that a denied action succeeded.

Long-running tool loops need budgets. Limit maximum tool calls, total execution time, repeated failures, and expensive external operations. If the budget is exhausted, return a partial result or ask the user for clarification rather than letting the agent continue indefinitely.

Tools should revalidate mutable state before a write. Claude might plan an action using information retrieved several turns earlier. If inventory, permission, account status, or record version can change, the executor should check current state at the moment of execution and return a conflict if assumptions are stale.

For MCP-backed catalogs, tool search can prevent context explosion, but governance still needs to define which MCP servers are trusted and which users may expose them to the agent. Discoverability is not authorization. A tool should not become callable merely because it can be found by a search query.

Parallel tool calls should preserve ordering semantics. Two read queries can usually run together; a create-then-update sequence cannot. If parallel branches can modify related state, use transactions or orchestration that handles conflict rather than allowing Claude’s output order to decide which write wins.

Tool use also affects memory and context. Large results should be summarized, stored externally, or cleared once the relevant fact is extracted. Passing huge result sets back through every agent turn increases latency and makes indirect injection more likely. Return the minimum information required for the next decision.

Agent testing should exercise wrong-tool temptations, ambiguous user requests, backend failures, permission denials, duplicated retries, and adversarial tool results. A tool system is production-ready when Claude’s occasional imperfect choice cannot become an unauthorized or unrecoverable business effect.

Tool ownership should remain explicit. Every production tool needs a team responsible for availability, authorization, schema changes, and incident response. An agent platform can discover thousands of tools, but discoverability without ownership produces fragile dependencies and unclear escalation when one capability fails.

Review tool catalogs periodically and remove obsolete operations. Fewer active tools reduce context, selection ambiguity, security surface, and maintenance. A retired business process should not remain callable indefinitely simply because deleting the tool definition requires coordination.

Tools that access sensitive data should return only the fields required for the current step. A customer lookup tool can expose a name and account status without returning every stored profile attribute. Data minimization reduces context cost and limits what an injected instruction can exfiltrate from one successful read.

Keep a compatibility test for every important tool. Validate the schema, authorization, typical success result, failure statuses, idempotency, and one adversarial input. When a backend API changes, this test should fail before the agent encounters the change in production.

Tool use turns Claude from a model that produces text into a component that can request information or propose external actions.
