The current API supports JSON outputs through
output_config.format
and strict tool use through
strict: true
on supported tools. Both rely on grammar-constrained sampling so the model’s output is limited to the supported schema rather than merely encouraged by a prompt.

The two capabilities solve different problems. JSON outputs constrain what Claude says in its final response. Strict tool use constrains the name and parameters of tool calls. Applications can use either one or combine both when an agent must call typed functions and then return a typed final result.

Structured generation belongs inside Claude Production Engineering.

Use JSON outputs for final response contracts

Define a JSON Schema and pass it through
output_config.format
with
type: json_schema
.

Claude returns JSON in a text content block that follows the schema in normal successful responses.

Reliable JSON should still validate stop reasons and business semantics before downstream execution.

Use strict tools for function contracts

Set
strict: true
on a supported tool definition when tool parameters must match the declared input schema.

Strict mode prevents missing required fields or incompatible types from reaching the executor.

Claude tool use should combine schema conformance with independent authorization and domain validation.

Design within the supported schema subset

Structured Outputs supports core JSON types, required properties, enums, constants, references, and other documented constructs with limitations.

Transform or simplify application models that use unsupported constraints rather than assuming every arbitrary JSON Schema feature can be compiled.

The production schema should be simple enough that developers can version and test it like an ordinary API contract.

Account for grammar compilation

The first request using a new schema incurs extra work while Anthropic compiles the grammar.

Compiled grammar artifacts are currently cached for twenty-four hours from last use.

Claude latency should include first-use and steady-state measurements when schemas are generated dynamically or changed frequently.

Understand cache invalidation

Changing the JSON schema structure invalidates its grammar cache, and changing the set of tools can also invalidate compiled state when tool use is combined with structured outputs.

Changing only some descriptive fields does not necessarily require the same recompilation.

Keep schema and tool versions stable enough that production does not spend unnecessary time rebuilding grammars for logically identical contracts.

Handle documented invalid-output cases

A safety refusal can take precedence over schema constraints and return
stop_reason: refusal
.

A response stopped at
max_tokens
can be incomplete, and Anthropic documents a casing edge case for string enums.

These cases belong in application error handling and regression tests rather than being treated as impossible because the feature is called “structured.”

Do not combine with citations in one response

Anthropic currently documents citations and structured outputs as incompatible in the same request because citation blocks need to interleave with text while the schema constrains the response.

Claude retrieval can separate retrieval/provenance from the structured-output stage when both are required.

For example, the application can hold trusted citation metadata from retrieval and ask Claude to produce a structured decision based on that evidence.

Keep schema definitions free of sensitive data

Compiled schema artifacts are cached separately from prompts and responses.

Do not place personal health data, credentials, customer identifiers, or other sensitive values in property names, enum choices, constants, or patterns.

The schema should describe the shape of data, while sensitive values belong in normal message content under the platform’s applicable data protections.

Use structured outputs as an interface, not a policy engine

A perfectly valid object can still contain a disallowed action or incorrect business value.

Application guardrails must validate permissions, ranges, resource ownership, and policy after parsing.

For production Claude systems, structured outputs solve syntax and type reliability so engineering teams can focus their validation effort on the business meaning that schemas alone cannot guarantee.

SDK helpers can map typed language models to JSON Schema and parse returned results into application types. This reduces repetitive serialization code, but teams should inspect the transformed schema for important production contracts because unsupported or transformed constraints may not mean exactly what the original type system expressed.

Use required properties deliberately. Optional fields can simplify flexible extraction but also create downstream branching. If a consumer needs a value every time, make it required and represent “not available” explicitly through a nullable or status field rather than relying on omission whose meaning is ambiguous.

Structured outputs can improve evaluation. Code graders can assert types, enums, lengths, and cross-field conditions directly without first repairing syntax. The benchmark can then focus on semantic correctness: whether the right category, amount, source, or next step was selected.

For agent systems, combining strict tool use with structured final output creates two clean interfaces: typed requests into tools and typed responses back to the caller. The application remains responsible for executing tools, maintaining state, and authorizing effects, but the model-facing contracts become much less fragile.

Version schemas alongside the prompt and model. A change in schema can itself alter model behavior by changing available fields and constraints. Treat that change as a release that receives evaluation, latency testing, and compatibility review rather than a harmless serialization edit.

The main value of Structured Outputs is architectural clarity. Language remains flexible where users interact with the system, while the boundary into software becomes typed and enforceable. That separation allows teams to use Claude’s reasoning without making every downstream component parse prose.

Schema design should consider downstream evolution. Adding an optional field is usually easier for consumers than renaming a required field or changing its type. If a structured-output schema is shared across services, apply ordinary API versioning principles and support a transition period where critical consumers need time to migrate.

Use enums only for domains that are truly closed. Categories such as
low
,
medium
, and
high
can work well, while a list of customer names or product IDs that changes daily does not belong in a static enum. Dynamic business values should be supplied as input data and validated after generation.

Descriptions inside the schema still matter. Grammar constraints guarantee shape, but clear property descriptions help Claude choose the correct value semantically. Define units, date expectations, domain meaning, and business distinctions where names alone are insufficient. Keep descriptions concise enough that the schema does not become another oversized prompt.

When the output is large, set
max_tokens
with enough room for the worst valid object. The model cannot satisfy the schema if generation is cut off. Estimate size from maximum array lengths and text fields, then monitor actual output distributions so the budget is neither too small nor needlessly excessive.

Structured Outputs can work with prompt caching, but changes to output format can invalidate prompt cache for that conversation thread. Release testing should therefore include cache-hit behavior and first-request schema compilation when both features are important to latency or cost.

Do not use strict tool schemas to encode authorization. A tool schema can restrict
amount
to a number and require a
recipient_id
, but it cannot prove the caller owns the recipient or is allowed to transfer funds. Authorization belongs in the executor with authenticated context and current business state.

Schema regression tests should include refusals, token exhaustion, invalid business combinations, and edge enum values. The happy-path guarantee is powerful enough that teams can focus testing on these documented exceptions and on semantic correctness rather than spending time repairing arbitrary malformed JSON.

Structured outputs can also reduce prompt complexity. Remove instructions such as “do not include markdown,” “use double quotes,” “always return these keys,” and repeated format examples when the schema already enforces them. Simpler prompts can be easier to maintain and can leave more context for the actual task.

The most effective architecture treats Structured Outputs as a boundary between probabilistic interpretation and deterministic software. Claude handles the ambiguity of natural-language input; the schema constrains the handoff; ordinary code validates policy and executes. Each layer does the kind of work it is best at.

Choose schema stability over novelty for high-volume services. Reusing a small set of well-understood contracts improves grammar-cache reuse, simplifies client compatibility, and makes evaluation data comparable over time. Dynamic per-user schemas can be useful, but they should solve a real requirement rather than merely mirror every UI variation.

Keep schema documentation beside the consuming code. Developers should know which fields Claude generates, which fields the application derives, what validation runs after parsing, and which failures produce retry versus human review. This turns Structured Outputs into an ordinary software interface teams can support.

Schema changes should be included in canary rollout. Send a small percentage of traffic or a test cohort through the new contract, confirm downstream parsing and business validation, then expand. This is especially important when multiple services consume the same structured response and one overlooked client may still expect the prior field set.

When a request can legitimately produce “no answer,” represent that state in the schema instead of forcing fabricated values. A status field plus nullable data can be safer than requiring every field to contain something. Structured outputs should make uncertainty explicit, not pressure the model to fill every slot.

Structured Outputs is Anthropic’s schema-constrained generation feature for applications that need Claude to return machine-readable data reliably.
