Security teams must protect AI systems as new attack surfaces, and they must prepare for adversaries who use AI to make phishing, reconnaissance, malware development, influence, fraud, and automation more scalable. The important distinction is that AI does not replace familiar cybersecurity fundamentals. It changes the speed, volume, interface, and failure modes around identity, data, software, and decision systems.

NIST’s current Cyber AI Profile work organizes the problem into securing AI system components, using AI for cyber defense, and thwarting AI-enabled cyber attacks. The profile remains a developing NIST community effort rather than a finished universal control catalog, but the framing is useful because defenders need to understand AI as both a protected asset and an attacker capability.

AI risk therefore belongs inside CompTIA Security Operations as an operational security concern rather than a separate specialty.

Protect the AI system like a real application

Models sit inside systems with identities, APIs, storage, retrieval, tools, networks, logs, and CI/CD.

AI cyber defense begins with ordinary hardening: least privilege, patching, input validation, secrets management, logging, dependency management, and incident response.

Defenders should map the full data flow instead of treating the model endpoint as the entire attack surface.

Expect prompt injection and tool abuse

Generative AI applications accept natural-language input that can influence how they use retrieved data or tools.

Adversarial testing should include direct and indirect prompt injection, instruction conflicts, poisoned retrieval, excessive tool use, and attempts to cross tenant or authorization boundaries.

The strongest control is usually outside the model: narrow tool permissions and deterministic validation before an external action occurs.

Watch the data supply chain

RAG corpora, fine-tuning sets, embeddings, prompt libraries, memory, and evaluation data can all carry malicious or misleading content.

Defenders need provenance, source ownership, access control, deletion, and monitoring for those derived assets.

One compromised knowledge source can influence many users without generating a traditional malware alert.

Prepare for AI-enabled phishing and social engineering

AI can reduce the effort required to create tailored messages, translated lures, voice or image impersonation, and large volumes of plausible content.

Detection should therefore rely less on “bad grammar” assumptions and more on sender identity, authentication, behavior, infrastructure, transaction context, and out-of-band verification for high-impact requests.

User education should focus on verification habits rather than trying to teach employees how to visually identify every synthetic artifact.

Assume adversaries automate reconnaissance

Attackers can use AI to summarize public information, correlate leaked data, explore exposed APIs, and accelerate scripting.

This makes asset inventory, attack-surface management, credential hygiene, and rapid remediation more important because forgotten exposures can be discovered faster.

Defenders should reduce the amount of useful unauthenticated information systems reveal, but should not expect obscurity to stop a motivated attacker.

Use AI in defense with human control

AI can help summarize incidents, prioritize findings, generate queries, classify alerts, and accelerate investigation.

The defensive use case needs the same governance as any AI application: benchmark quality, constrain access, protect sensitive telemetry, and require analyst verification for high-impact actions.

Automation should shorten evidence gathering without turning probabilistic output into an unquestioned containment decision.

Detect abnormal AI service behavior

Monitor unexpected model invocation volume, unusual identities, new tools, guardrail or policy changes, data-source modifications, and sudden shifts in AI egress.

Security operations architecture should connect AI workload logs with identity, endpoint, cloud, and network telemetry so an AI incident does not remain isolated in a product-specific console.

Attackers may target the management plane as often as the model runtime.

Keep model output out of trust decisions

A model should not decide whether a user is authorized, whether a transaction is valid, or whether security policy can be bypassed.

Those decisions belong in deterministic IAM, application logic, policy engines, and approval workflows.

This separation limits damage when the model is manipulated or simply wrong.

Make AI part of normal incident response

Runbooks should know how to disable a model route, remove a knowledge source, revoke an agent identity, block a tool, preserve traces, and restore a known-good version.

For defensive teams working around CS0-003 or CAS-005, the durable lesson is to adapt existing security fundamentals to AI-specific data and orchestration risks. AI changes the attack surface, but evidence, least privilege, layered control, and incident discipline still do the real defensive work.

Security teams should also track AI capability changes as material architecture changes. Adding memory, autonomous triggers, external tools, or a new data source can increase risk more than swapping one model for another, even when users see the same chat interface.

Metrics should focus on defensive outcomes: unauthorized actions prevented, sensitive data paths narrowed, high-risk AI findings remediated, detection time, containment time, and the percentage of AI systems with clear owners and telemetry. Counting AI alerts without context creates another noisy security backlog.

Finally, maintain a shared vocabulary between AI engineers and SOC teams. Terms such as prompt injection, tool execution, RAG poisoning, model endpoint, agent identity, and evaluation should map to concrete logs and controls so responders can investigate the system without waiting for one specialist to translate it.

AI systems also create a new dependency surface for software supply-chain defense. Models, SDKs, orchestration frameworks, MCP servers, vector databases, prompt packages, container images, and third-party APIs can each change independently. Defenders should know which components are allowed into production and how a vulnerable or malicious dependency can be removed without rebuilding the entire service under incident pressure.

Model theft and unauthorized replication matter where proprietary or fine-tuned models carry business value. Access controls, rate limits, output monitoring, watermarking or fingerprinting approaches where appropriate, and contractual protections may all contribute. Security teams should distinguish model confidentiality from data confidentiality because the evidence and response actions differ.

AI can also create denial-of-service and cost-amplification attacks. Long prompts, recursive agents, expensive tools, large multimodal inputs, and repeated retries can exhaust quotas or budgets without exploiting a conventional software vulnerability. Security engineering should include request limits, agent step limits, per-user quotas, rate limiting, and cost anomaly detection.

Deepfakes and synthetic identity attacks shift verification toward trusted channels. Help desks, finance teams, executives, and SOC responders should have out-of-band methods for high-consequence requests rather than relying on voice familiarity or video appearance. The defensive control is strong identity proof and workflow approval, not perfect media forensics.

AI-enabled defense itself can create risk if analysts over-trust summaries or suggested actions. A model can omit evidence, merge separate incidents, or confidently explain the wrong root cause. Use AI to accelerate retrieval and synthesis, but keep raw telemetry, query logic, and response authority available to the human investigator.

The practical SOC goal is not to create a special “AI security queue.” It is to make AI assets and AI-enabled attacks visible inside the same asset, identity, vulnerability, detection, and incident processes defenders already operate. New risks should integrate into ordinary security ownership so they do not remain orphaned experiments outside the control system.

Defenders should include AI assets in exposure management and vulnerability processes even when the platform is fully managed. Application code, containers, orchestration services, vector stores, browser tools, third-party plugins, and identity roles still create patching and misconfiguration risk around the model service.

Data exfiltration through model output deserves specific monitoring. A compromised agent may not upload a file directly; it might summarize sensitive records into a response, encode data across repeated outputs, or call an external tool with hidden fields. Egress monitoring, DLP, tool allowlists, and output review can expose these nontraditional paths.

Security teams also need a process for evaluating AI-generated security content. Detection queries, incident summaries, remediation scripts, and vulnerability explanations produced by AI should be reviewed before execution. A hallucinated command in a privileged shell can create more damage than a poor chatbot answer.

The defender mindset should remain risk-based. AI introduces new mechanisms, but the questions remain familiar: what asset matters, who can reach it, which boundary can fail, what telemetry proves misuse, and how quickly can the organization contain and recover? Keeping those questions stable prevents AI security from becoming a collection of disconnected buzzwords.

Include AI assets in tabletop exercises. Simulate a poisoned knowledge source, compromised agent identity, stolen API key, abusive model usage, or manipulated tool response and require the SOC, platform team, and business owner to coordinate containment. Exercises reveal missing logs and unclear ownership before a real AI incident forces teams to invent the process under pressure.

Keep AI incident taxonomy simple enough that analysts use it consistently. Distinguish data exposure, model or prompt abuse, unauthorized tool action, identity compromise, availability or cost abuse, and supply-chain issues so incidents route to the team that owns the failing control.

AI security changes the defender’s problem in two directions.
