Authentication in Copilot Studio has several layers that are easy to collapse into one word. The agent itself has an identity in Microsoft Entra ID, end users may sign in to the agent, and each tool can use either user-specific access or shared credentials. Those choices determine who the system believes is acting and which data the action is allowed to reach.<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s current model changed in 2026: new Copilot Studio agents automatically receive Microsoft Entra Agent IDs, which are service principals with an Agent subtype. Existing agents created before the change can still use legacy app registrations during the migration period. The OAuth authentication model remains familiar, but agent-specific identities improve governance visibility and policy control.<\/p>\n

Authentication is therefore a design responsibility inside Microsoft Business AI Systems<\/a>, not a configuration screen to complete after development.<\/p>\n

Separate agent identity from user identity<\/h3>\n

The agent needs an identity so it can communicate with channels and services. The user may also need to authenticate so the agent can respect that person’s access rights.<\/p>\n

Identity boundaries<\/a> become clearer when application, user, and content identities are treated as separate policy inputs.<\/p>\n

Do not assume the fact that an agent is authenticated means every user request should run with the agent’s full authority.<\/p>\n

Understand Entra Agent IDs<\/h3>\n

New Copilot Studio agents automatically receive Entra Agent IDs. Administrators can view and govern these agent identities in Entra and apply controls designed for agentic workloads.<\/p>\n

Older agents can continue to use traditional app registrations while migration proceeds.<\/p>\n

Identity migration should be tested because conditional-access and governance behavior can change even when the agent’s business logic remains the same.<\/p>\n

Choose user authentication when access must follow the user<\/h3>\n

Copilot Studio supports end-user authentication through Microsoft Entra ID. This is the stronger pattern when the agent needs to retrieve data the user is already authorized to see or perform an action on that user’s behalf.<\/p>\n

User authentication lets downstream systems enforce the user’s existing permissions instead of treating the agent as one all-powerful service account.<\/p>\n

Identity and data<\/a> should remain aligned so a conversation does not become a path around normal Microsoft 365 access boundaries.<\/p>\n

Use shared credentials only for shared authority<\/h3>\n

Copilot Studio tool configuration can use author-provided credentials for scenarios where access is intentionally shared and user-specific permission is not required.<\/p>\n

This can be appropriate for low-risk public or common data, but it creates a service-style authority boundary.<\/p>\n

Document which tools use shared credentials, what resources they can access, and why user delegation was not required.<\/p>\n

Configure SSO where the host experience supports it<\/h3>\n

Single sign-on reduces friction when users are already signed in to the host website or application. Copilot Studio can use Microsoft Entra ID SSO in supported custom-canvas scenarios.<\/p>\n

The SSO design includes app registrations, scopes, redirect settings, and token exchange. Those pieces need to match the deployment channel.<\/p>\n

Do not treat successful portal testing as proof that every channel uses the same authentication flow.<\/p>\n

Expect conditional access to affect agents<\/h3>\n

Conditional Access can block or challenge agent sign-in and user authentication based on organizational policy.<\/p>\n

Microsoft documents scenarios where Copilot Studio agents appear unresponsive when Conditional Access prevents token acquisition on a channel.<\/p>\n

Authentication runbooks should therefore include Entra sign-in logs and policy evaluation, not only Copilot Studio troubleshooting.<\/p>\n

Protect tool authentication separately<\/h3>\n

A user may successfully authenticate to the agent while a connector or tool uses a different credential model.<\/p>\n

Copilot Studio actions<\/a> should be reviewed one by one for whether they use the current user’s authority or a shared connection.<\/p>\n

This prevents the front door from being secure while a downstream tool quietly has broader permissions than the user expects.<\/p>\n

Use governance controls at the environment level<\/h3>\n

Power Platform administrators can restrict which authentication modes makers are allowed to configure for agents in an environment.<\/p>\n

Current preview controls can require Microsoft authentication, require Entra authentication, or allow broader supported methods according to policy.<\/p>\n

Environment-level governance is useful when the organization wants a consistent security baseline rather than reviewing every agent from scratch.<\/p>\n

Design authentication as lifecycle policy<\/h3>\n

Authentication requirements change when agents move from pilot to broader deployment, add new channels, connect to sensitive data, or migrate identity models.<\/p>\n

Agent lifecycle<\/a> should therefore include periodic identity and connection review.<\/p>\n

For current AB-100<\/a> work, the durable model is to distinguish agent identity, user authentication, tool credentials, channel SSO, and environment policy. Good authentication is not one sign-in screen; it is a chain of identities whose permissions remain understandable from user request to business action.<\/p>

Authentication design should begin with a matrix of actors and resources. List the user, the agent identity, each tool or connector, the target service, and the credential used for that call. This makes it easier to spot where a shared author connection is unintentionally granting broader access than the user-facing experience suggests.<\/p>\n

Authorization is the companion problem. A valid token proves identity; the target system still decides what that identity may do. Role assignments, Microsoft 365 permissions, Dataverse security roles, connector policies, and business rules should remain in force after authentication succeeds.<\/p>\n

Channel design can change authentication behavior. Teams, websites, custom canvases, and other channels may have different SSO capabilities and user experiences. Test the real deployment channel rather than assuming the built-in test pane represents production sign-in.<\/p>\n

Consent and scopes deserve review. Request only the permissions the agent and tool need, and avoid broad delegated scopes because they make future security review harder. If a new knowledge source or action requires more permission, treat the change as a release decision rather than silently expanding consent.<\/p>\n

Agent identity lifecycle should be monitored alongside the agent itself. Disabled, migrated, or orphaned identities can break channels and tools even when the agent configuration looks healthy. Administrators should be able to connect the Entra object back to its business owner and deployed agent.<\/p>\n

Conditional Access testing should include expected failures. Verify what users see when device, location, risk, or sign-in conditions block access. A security policy that produces an opaque blank experience will generate support incidents even when enforcement is technically correct.<\/p>\n

Agentic ALM<\/a> should validate authentication after every environment move because client IDs, scopes, connection references, tenant settings, and service identities can differ. Successful import is not proof of successful sign-in.<\/p>\n

Finally, document the intended identity story in plain language: \u201cthe user signs in here, the agent acts as itself here, this tool acts on behalf of the user, and this shared service account can read only this dataset.\u201d If the architecture cannot be explained that simply, permissions are probably harder to govern than they need to be.<\/p>\n

Authentication UX matters because repeated sign-in prompts can destroy adoption even when the security design is correct. Use SSO where supported, keep consent understandable, and avoid asking users to authenticate to the same backend through several separate tools when one delegated connection pattern would suffice.<\/p>\n

Service-to-service calls should use identities that can be disabled independently. If a shared connection is compromised, the organization should be able to revoke that credential without disabling every agent in the environment.<\/p>\n

Testing should cover account edge cases: users without licenses, guest users, users outside the intended group, revoked sessions, expired consent, and conditional-access challenges. These cases often expose hidden assumptions in the happy-path configuration.<\/p>\n

Keep identity documentation synchronized with the actual tenant. App registrations, Agent IDs, scopes, redirect URIs, and connection owners change over time. An architecture document that names a deleted application ID is worse than no document because it sends responders in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n

Audit evidence should connect the human request to the agent and downstream action. Log enough nonsecret metadata to show which user authenticated, which agent identity was involved, which tool credential path was used, and whether authorization succeeded. This is especially important for shared author credentials because the downstream system may otherwise record only the service identity.<\/p>\n

Identity architecture should also include offboarding. When a user leaves, delegated access should disappear through normal Entra controls; when an agent retires, its Agent ID, app registration, connections, and secrets should be reviewed for removal. Authentication lifecycle is part of agent lifecycle.<\/p>\n

Authentication should be included in user acceptance testing because security friction is part of the product experience. A technically correct design that repeatedly interrupts users with unexpected consent or sign-in prompts can undermine adoption and drive people toward unsupported alternatives.<\/p>\n

For shared enterprise agents, publish a short authentication map for support teams. It should identify the expected sign-in method, supported channels, common failure signals, and the admin team that owns each identity or connection.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
