Azure Functions provides serverless compute for bounded handlers, while Durable Functions and the broader Durable Task stack add state persistence, retries, coordination, and long-running workflows.

It is important to distinguish serverless compute from serverless model APIs. Microsoft Foundry model deployments can be consumed through managed APIs, while Azure Functions is the application compute that handles events or exposes business endpoints. One does not replace the other.

Serverless patterns belong inside Azure AI engineering because they shape scaling, reliability, and cost around the model.

Use Functions for bounded event handlers

Azure Functions works well for tasks that start from HTTP, Event Grid, Service Bus, timers, or storage events and can complete within a bounded execution.

A function can validate input, call a model, write a result, or enqueue longer work.

Event-driven GenAI is a natural fit when AI work begins from business events instead of a synchronous user request.

Use Durable Task for long-running workflows

Long agent or AI workflows need checkpointing, retries, timers, human approval, or fan-out/fan-in. Durable Task provides those semantics while allowing workers to remain stateless.

The current Agent Framework Durable Extension can host durable agents and workflows on Azure Functions in C# and Python.

Agent workflows become easier to operate when workflow state survives worker restarts.

Separate deterministic orchestration from agent loops

Durable Task distinguishes deterministic workflows, where code defines control flow, from agent-directed loops, where the model chooses the next action.

Use deterministic orchestration when compliance, auditability, or known business sequences matter. Use agent loops for open-ended tasks that genuinely require adaptive planning.

The two approaches can coexist in one serverless application.

Put queues between bursty events and model quota

Serverless compute can scale quickly, but the model endpoint still has rate and token limits.

Use Service Bus or another durable queue to absorb bursts and let workers process at the safe concurrency of the AI deployment.

Serverless capacity still needs planning because scaling Functions does not create additional model quota.

Keep functions idempotent where possible

Events and retries can produce duplicate execution. Use operation IDs and business-level idempotency for writes and external actions.

A repeated model call wastes tokens; a repeated business transaction can be worse.

Durable orchestration and queue settlement should make retry behavior explicit rather than accidental.

Use managed identity for service access

Functions can use managed identities to call Azure OpenAI, Search, Key Vault, Storage, and other Azure services without embedded secrets.

Secrets management should leave only unavoidable third-party credentials in Key Vault.

This reduces secret distribution across scaled-out function instances.

Cold start and connection setup affect latency

Serverless platforms trade infrastructure management for dynamic allocation. Some plans and workloads can experience startup overhead.

Reuse SDK clients within the process, avoid unnecessary initialization on every invocation, and choose hosting plans based on the latency requirement.

Latency tuning should measure the entire function-to-model path instead of assuming the model dominates response time.

Use serverless for asynchronous AI work

Document processing, synthetic evaluation, batch enrichment, and notification workflows often do not need an interactive response.

Functions and queues let those workloads run independently from user-facing model capacity.

Event-driven systems keep producers and AI consumers loosely coupled as workload volume changes.

Serverless should simplify operations, not hide them

Even without servers to patch, teams still need tracing, dead-letter handling, quotas, cost monitoring, deployment versioning, and runbooks.

For current AI-103 work, serverless is most effective when bounded Functions handle events, Durable Task handles state, queues handle backpressure, and identity plus observability keep the scaled system controlled.

HTTP-triggered serverless functions should remain thin when the AI task can take a long time. Accept the request, validate it, create a durable work item, and return a correlation identifier rather than holding an HTTP connection open for minutes. Clients can poll, subscribe to events, or receive a callback depending on the product.

Durable workflows are particularly valuable for human-in-the-loop AI. An orchestration can pause without keeping a worker alive, then resume when an approval event arrives. The approval state, timeout, and rejection path remain explicit in code instead of depending on a prompt instruction.

Fan-out/fan-in patterns can parallelize independent AI work such as processing many documents or asking several specialist agents to analyze different sections. Concurrency must still respect model quota and downstream rate limits. Serverless compute can scale faster than the services it calls.

Use deterministic orchestration code carefully. Durable orchestrators have replay semantics, so nondeterministic work such as network calls, timestamps, random numbers, or model requests belongs in activities rather than in the orchestration function itself. That separation allows the workflow state to replay safely after failure.

Cost behavior depends on the hosting plan and workload shape. Sporadic event-driven work can benefit from consumption-based compute, while latency-sensitive or sustained workloads may justify always-ready or premium capacity. The right choice should include cold-start tolerance, execution duration, networking, and concurrency.

Online evaluation can run as asynchronous serverless work after production interactions rather than blocking the user response. Sampling and queue-based evaluation keep quality monitoring separate from the interactive latency budget.

Serverless applications still need deployment versioning. Functions, durable workflow definitions, model deployments, prompts, and schemas should move through controlled release. A workflow replaying after deployment must remain compatible with state created by the previous version or have a migration strategy.

Operational dashboards should include invocation failures, queue depth, durable-instance status, model throttling, function concurrency, and end-to-end completion time. Serverless removes server management; it does not remove the need to understand the system.

Choose queue semantics intentionally. A simple at-least-once delivery model is often sufficient when workers are idempotent. If order matters within one business entity, sessions or partitioning can preserve local order without forcing the whole workload through one serial queue.

Serverless orchestration can also support compensating actions. If an AI workflow successfully updates one system but fails before the next step, the durable workflow can either retry, reverse the earlier action where possible, or escalate for human repair. This is safer than restarting the whole process blindly.

Long-running generations should not monopolize function concurrency if the product can split them into asynchronous stages. One function can prepare the request, a worker can call the model, and another step can validate or persist the result. Breaking the workflow into durable stages makes backpressure visible.

Online evaluation jobs can use the same serverless pattern: production traces enter a queue, evaluator workers process them at controlled concurrency, and results land in an analytics or evaluation store without delaying user traffic.

Networking affects serverless design. A Function that must reach private Foundry, Search, or Key Vault resources needs the correct VNet integration and DNS path. Serverless does not mean the network can be ignored.

Use application settings for endpoints and feature flags, but keep secrets in Key Vault or identity-based connections. Deployment slots or staged releases can help validate configuration before shifting traffic.

Finally, define maximum concurrency at both compute and application layers. Unlimited function scale can turn one event storm into a flood of model calls. Capacity-aware scaling is part of reliability, not an optimization added later.

Event schemas should remain stable enough that producers and consumers can deploy independently. Version message contracts and make new fields additive where possible. A serverless architecture becomes tightly coupled again if every producer must update whenever one consumer changes its internal AI workflow.

Use dead-letter queues and durable failure state as operational inputs. A failed AI task should retain the correlation ID, workflow version, relevant nonsecret metadata, and error category so an operator can decide whether replay is safe. Blind automatic replay can repeat a bad tool action or burn tokens on permanently invalid input.

Serverless systems also need workload separation. Interactive HTTP traffic, background evaluation, document ingestion, and scheduled batch jobs can use different queues or function apps when their latency and capacity priorities differ. Separation prevents one background spike from degrading the user-facing path.

For recovery, infrastructure should be reproducible from source control. Function apps, queues, identities, network integration, and configuration should be deployable without relying on portal-only setup. Serverless reduces server administration, but repeatable infrastructure is still necessary for disaster recovery.

Durable timers can also replace wasteful polling. If a workflow must wait for an external process or review window, schedule a durable wake-up or event rather than keeping a worker running or repeatedly calling the dependency. This reduces cost and keeps long waits visible in workflow state.

Serverless is useful for AI when the application needs event-driven execution, burst handling, lightweight APIs, scheduled jobs, or durable orchestration without managing a permanently running server.
